Have you heard about Intel’s new powerful processors that came out this year? Take some time to familiarize yourself with some of the details during Intel gamer days. That’s right, Intel gamer days are here again with great savings on Intel powered laptops and desktop computers that’ll make everything you do go more smoothly: school, work, and especially gaming! Learn some facts about Intel’s new processors, then enter for a chance to win an amazing Intel powered laptop.

Which Intel processor will you choose

Shopping for a laptop isn’t easy for most of us. Part of the problem is that Best Buy has an incredibly large selection. A good first step is to read the Laptop buying guide and narrow down your choices a little. You can also narrow it down by deciding what kind of processor you want: on the Best Buy laptops page you will see a set of facets on the left hand side of the page for processor type. If you want one of the new Intel processors, then you would select one with “Intel” at the beginning. After that, you’ll want to choose the processor that matches your needs and budget. Here is a short primer that should help:

  1. i5 vs i7 vs i9: this is the first main differentiator for Intel processors where a higher number means better performance and usually a higher price too. If you are doing basic computing tasks (for work or school) and play simple games then an i5 may be perfect for your needs and will likely save you some money. If you want a laptop capable of playing complex games, processing large video files, or other demanding tasks then pay a little extra for a machine with a higher numbered processor.
  2. 11th gen vs 12th gen: as with most technologies, newer will be faster and more versatile. This is especially true for Intel processors released this year. We discussed the 11th generation processors in last year’s Intel gamer days article. They are still amazing processors, capable of handling the most complex tasks and demanding games very well. This year Intel released a major leap in processor design with the 12th gen processor as we discussed in an article last spring. Read that article and you’ll understand why “11 is good, but 12 is a lot better.” Again, if you want to save money, then last year’s model will be excellent for your needs. If you want maximum flexibility and performance then you’ll be leaning toward the newest models.
  3. H vs K vs HK: Intel model numbers have a suffix and two of the most important ones for fast laptops are H and K. H means the processor is optimized for high performance in laptops. Most of the fastest laptops have this suffix. The other suffix, K, is especially useful for very serious gamers or computing enthusiasts who want to push their machines to their absolute limits. The K means the processor is unlocked, and can be configured to go beyond the fastest specifications set by the manufacturer: the term for this is overclocking. People who desire an extra edge in gaming, or want to process very demanding computing task will often turn to a K processor.

What questions do you have about Intel processors

Those three points above will likely help most computer buyers but I know they won’t answer all of your questions. Intel actually has a quite a range of processors and it can be confusing. 3. So does it mean that for each generation there is a corresponding i5,i7, and i9 processor or the higher the generation, the higher the i number?

  4. I find this interesting that the K means the processor is unlocked, and can be configured to go beyond the fastest specifications set by the manufacturer: the term for this is overclocking, but I also wonder how this is possible.

  5. The reason you see some gamers is because It can absorb a large amount of heat energy, is Low cost and is Economical as a way to cool off parts of a computer.

  6. I learned about which intel I would need based on my needs. I didn’t know that the higher the number equals faster processing speeds. I am on the lookout for an i9 now to meet my needs

  7. I learned about which intel I would need based on my needs. I didn’t know that the higher the number equals faster processing speeds. I am on the lookout for an i9 now to meet my needs

  8. I learned about which intel I would need based on my needs. I didn’t know that the higher the number equals faster processing speeds. I am on the lookout for an i9 now to meet my needs

  9. For 10 years I always use a Intel processor. I had a bad experience with Amd.
I 7 Intel processors are the best amd are more convenient in price

  10. I learned what the Generation and SKU number was – I thought it was a speed designation in GHz, but it’s the processor Generation and part number! Easier to understand than Kaby Lake or other codenames for processor generations.

  11. I learned that if I am not gaming or processing large video files, then I can probably save money by buying and i5 processor instead of an i7 or i9.

  12. Intel processors i learned about their using the suffix of H, K and HK , what that stands for and how they compare to each other , this would be so great to win thanks !

  13. I learned about H vs K vs HK. Which I had no clue about until now. Thank you for the information and this great contest!

  14. I just learned from this article what the ‘K” designation is for: K means the processor is unlocked, and can be configured to go beyond the fastest specifications set by the manufacturer and that this is known as Overclocking.

  15. Now I know what the H stands for when shopping for laptops. By learning it is a processor for high performance in laptops

  16. Knowing that certain processors were optimized for high performance and some processors could be overclocked, I did not understand all the details. I did not know you could determine these details from the H, K and/or HK suffix. I know have a understanding what these suffix mean

  17. Just learned that the H suffix means a high performance model and the K suffix means it is unlocked so can be overclocked. I know I’m definitely not at the level to need a K suffix!

  18. I had no idea what the suffix on Intel model numbers meant. Now I know the H means the processor is optimized for high performance in laptops and the K means the processor is unlocked,

  19. The “K” chips are usually the fastest, with higher clock speeds than the standard chips without a letter in Intel’s mainstream chips @Paulo Soares

  20. I learned the difference between 11th gen and 12th gen processors!

  21. If you are doing basic computing tasks (for work or school) and play simple games then an i5 may be perfect for your needs and will likely save you some money.

  22. I wasn’t aware you could overclock a laptop processor. I always assumed there were limitations based on size and integration. Its good to know I can get a product that is more mobile and not have to compromise performance.

  23. I did not know the “K means the processor is unlocked, and can be configured to go beyond the fastest specifications set by the manufacturer: the term for this is overclocking.” That would be very helpful to gamers….

  24. I’m still confused between all the different SKUs even within a modifier. What makes one i5 better than another and what does that mean for real world applications?

  25. I think it is interesting that the K suffix is for unlocked CPUs. Intel has so many different suffixes (U, Y, X, etc); it is difficult to remember all of them. I remembered that X was for unlocked, but forgot about K.

  26. I knew nothing about Intel processors before I read this article. I think I have a better understanding of the suffixes and the numbers that are associated with the processors.

  27. Wow! My son who has been begging for a PC set up or gaming Laptop! I learned that The 12th Gen Intel processors HAS 6 P-cores and 8 E-cores making it super fast for gaming! Very cool!!

  28. The question(s) I have remaining relates to overclocking. Why is it necessary to overclock a chip today? Why isn’t the chip simply already set up to operate at its top speed without the need to play around with any settings? Years (many years) ago, overclocking a chip might have made a huge difference in a computer’s performance. With the speeds of today’s chips does overclocking a chip really, truly make a demonstrable difference in its performance?

  29. I had heard that certain processors were optimized for high performance and some processors could be overclocked. But I didn’t realize all the details and how you could determine these details from the H, K and/or HK suffix. Now I know what those suffix letters really mean.

  30. It depends, for desktops the latest i9-12900 or i9-12900K has 8 cores. For laptops the i9-12900H and i9-12900HK have 6 cores. One of the letters not mentioned in the article is in the i9-12900HX for laptops. The X version uses 8 cores.

  31. Almost certainly. Your motherboard would be (FC)LGA 1151 which stands for (Coffee Lake Refresh) Land Grid Array 1151 where 1151 is the number of pins in the array. The i7-8700 you already have is close to the top CPU you could buy for your motherboard.

  32. I knew H were high performance processors. But I didn’t know K was for unlocking performance beyond its specifications

  33. One thing I learned from this article that I find interesting is what “H” and “K” mean when referring to Intel model numbers, “K” meaning the processor is unlocked.

  34. I always wondered what the H standed for when shopping for laptops and I learned it is a processor for high perfomance in laptops.

  35. 1. The H/K/HK suffix differentiation is good to know and will help inform my next purchase.

  36. 1. for the K series intel processors do you provide any documentations for the recommended
amount to over/underclock or is it pure guess work. I am also wondering if you provide
modular hardware components /documentations for gamers to help monitor these changes
to better improve performance while keeping risks minimal.

  38. learned about all the multi-tasking demands gamers put on their machines and how 12th gen intel processors meet these challenges

  39. I learned that the H suffix means the processor is optimized for high performance in laptops – this is what I’ve been looking for !

  40. I learned about the h and k for processors. I will definitely be looking for a “k” processor laptop because I play pc games and like to overclock my processor and video card.
K for killer processor for the Intel laptop.

  41. I just learned that Intel model numbers have a suffix and two of the most important ones for fast laptops are H and K. H means the processor is optimized for high performance in laptops. Most of the fastest laptops have this suffix. The other suffix, K, is especially useful for very serious gamers.

  42. Hey, I have just gotten into gaming and laptops. I play on a very slow $150 laptop and play browser games mostly. It is puzzling to see how much goes into technology and in this case, laptops and I just had a general question about which of these is faster: H, K or HK? Thank you and good luck to everyone. Thank you to BestBuy for running this giveaway!

  43. Not that much to be honest. Barring a mistake that gets a lot of people fired, the days of 50% overclocks by the average Intel user are long gone. The heyday of easy cheap extra cycles likely peaked with the Bloomfield LGA1366 CPUs around 12 years ago. Now a 10-12% overclock keeps you competitive with the next generation which is always around the corner, and though higher overclocks are possible, the costs associated make it a very poor value investment.

The heyday did leave an interesting legacy in the desktop enthusiast space, as performance and engineering aficionados were supplanted by shilly social media tech bros. There is less actual overclocking now, yet sales of unlocked CPUs and overwrought cooling systems are stronger than ever because of the way PCs are marketed by “independent” promoters as performance automobiles once were. Indeed the “cool looking” PC you see on TikTok is likely to have cost many times more for cooling, lighting, technical enhancements and aesthetic modifications than the “brain” or CPU.

  44. I learned (by following the link to the 12th generation processors from last spring) that the 12th Generation series mobile processors feature up to 6 performance cores for maximum responsiveness, and up to 8 efficient cores optimized for background tasks and threaded jobs.

  45. Intel chooses many years in advance, what is known as their CPU or technology “roadmap” has code named generations of products past 2024.

  46. In the contest of this article the SKU is Intel’s number to identify a chip and what it was tested and sold as. Intel CPUs also have traditional 8 alpha-numeric SKUs overclockers call “batch numbers” which are of interest because in theory some batches of CPUs are discovered to have a slightly higher overclocking potential than others, causing a scramble towards these “silicon lottery” winners.

  47. SKU stands for Stock Keeping Unit which is a the vendor’s identification number for a specific product that may also include other information like lot numbers for stock rotation and profit analysis. For instance, the bar-coded UPC that you see on commercial products could be enough to identify an exact same product, but the vendor’s SKU could differentiate the ones bought from the supplier for $221 in 2021 from the ones bought for $240 in 2022.

  48. Typically gains from one generation to the next are in the 8-15% range, regardless of engineering advances, The more cynical among us think this is a set target because it is calculated that this type of release schedule is more profitable, .

  49. H is faster than no H in laptops, K is only faster than no K in a desktop if you know how to make it go faster and can balance performance with the additional cooling required to not shut down from overheating, and HK is both optimized for a laptop and unlocked so you really have to know what you’re doing with cooling so you either don’t set fire to your lap, or are willing to use your laptop plugged in most of the time because the kind of power computing that comes with overclocking will use a lot more battery power.

  50. A short answer is that for the same generation and process (currently 7nm for 12th Gen) , differences in top clock speed aren’t much different. The difference in “speed” i.e. computing power are mostly from differences in the number of cores and threads and the size of CPU cache memory, the fastest memory accessible.

  51. I learnt which I’m glad this will help me save money the differences of 11th generation processors vs 12th generation processors.

  52. The distinction between H vs K vs HK was interesting to read! I get so used to seeing random numbers and letters next to the latest tech product name but it’s nice to finally understand what some of them mean! ( High performance, unlocked, ect)

  53. Is there an enhancement in hardware protection with 12th gen and Intel vPro – if yes, what benefits does it bring?

  54. One thing I don’t understand about Intel processors is how hard is it to overclock them and which one is the best entry card into it?

  55. One interesting thing I recently learned about 12th Generation Intel Core processors regards the U-Series of processors commonly used in thin and light / 2-in-1 laptops. If the last number in the processor name is a 0, it means that the processor is a 9-watt ultra power-efficient processor, while a 5 as the last number stands for a 15-watt processor.

  56. i5 vs i7 vs i9: denotes performance but what is the actual difference between i5-i7-i9 is it the core count or just speed?

    TIL-that the K is overclockable

  57. I never knew that fast laptops are H and K. H means the processor is optimized for high performance in laptops. Most of the fastest laptops have this suffix

  58. What I found interesting? That Intel 12th-Gen P-cores and E-cores can BOTH be overclocked to get faster performance.

  59. How much better is the 12th Intel generation than the 11th? Is it worth waiting for the release of the 13th gen in terms of saving money?

  60. I knew about the i5/i7/i9 and the generations but was not aware of what the final letter (H or K or HK) meant, which was interesting to learn.

  61. I thought the i5, i7 etc modifiers was interesting since that is often what you see on a sticker on the front of a computer tower identifying which Intel Core processor it contains.

  62. The thing I learned from this Intel article was what the classification of H vs K vs HK means for the processor. H = high performance and K = unlocked for gamers to get the most out of their pc.

  63. I learned about the difference in Intel’s model numbering scheme how to read upon their suffixes to determine which is the best model to go with (which seems to be HK).

  64. I learned about the differences and importance of H vs K vs HK in the performance of Intel processors. Thanks for the information and opportunity!

  65. I got it a bit…
H means the processor is optimized for high performance,
K means that the processor is overclocked
    But, what does HK means?

  66. I never knew about the numbers after the modifier. Now I know. But is there a difference between the SKU? Also, the article mentioned the suffix is H or K or HK but didn’t discuss the meaning of HK. Doe anyone know?

  67. I always knew that some people pushed their machines to their absolute limits (overclocked). Today I learned that it is the K suffix on the Intel model number that means the processor is unlocked and can be configured beyond the fastest specifications set by the manufacturer.

  68. One thing I learned was what the numbers and order meant. I just had always looked at it and gotten confused, but now I know how to tell the modifier and generation!

  69. I learned the meaning of the suffixes on intel model numbers. The suffix H denotes optimization doe high performance. K is great for games because it’s unlocked so it can run faster than specified

  70. overclocking is generally not good for the health of your processor, as there is a risk of overheating. laptops that allow for overclocking may have more expensive advanced cooling systems in place to handle the downsides of overclocking or are used by professionals who understand the risks and need to overclock anyway.

  71. I learned the meaning of the suffixes on intel model numbers. The suffix H denotes optimization doe high performance. K is great for games because it’s unlocked so it can run faster than specified

  72. SKU stands for “stock keeping unit” and — as the name suggests — it is a number (usually eight alphanumeric digits) that retailers assign to products to keep track of stock internally. Hope that helps 🙂

  73. Different model numbers and suffix letters are some things I learned from this post to figure out which laptops are best for all-around use or gaming to the max.

  74. One thing I learned was what the numbers and order meant. I just had always looked at it and gotten confused, but now I know how to tell the modifier and generation!

  75. I learned about the basic difference in i5 vs i7 vs i9, and have decided that i7 is probably the best for me.

  76. I had no idea that H means the processor is for high performance in laptops and most of the fastest laptops have this suffix. Does this mean that this type of processor would be better for designing/doing renderings? I don’t find my current laptop can keep up although it is older.

  77. my question is, if the chip can be overclocked to a higher speed, why doesnt Intel just make the higher speed the default speed.

  78. I learned the importance of the suffix, had no idea what the H was indicating before, but did know the K meant it was easier to overclock.

  79. Hi, good question. When there is an F in the suffix, it means that the processor does not come with an integrated graphics card. 12900KF would mean it’s a 12th gen processor that is overclockable but doesn’t have integrated graphics, which makes it slightly cheaper than a HK for example.

  80. I think I know a little more about the difference between the processors. I still am wondering if i12 is what I need to basic photo/video editing and watching Netflix?

  81. Which is best for photo and video editing, is Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 Mobile Platform a good choice? So many options.

  82. How does one find out which processor a laptop has? Mine has a sticker that say i5 but where do I find the generation and model numbers?

  83. I don’t know whether the new generation i7 is faster than the last generation i9 (and so on with the # suffix’s). Is there an easier way to know the speed based on the i# chip number? Is that the speed or model? Example the i7-9700k. Is 9700 the speed or model?

  84. I learned about the model numbers. Intel model numbers have a suffix and two of the most important ones for fast laptops are H and K. H means the processor is optimized for high performance in laptops

  85. One thing I learned about Intel processors is, ” H means the processor is optimized for high performance in laptops. Most of the fastest laptops have this suffix.” It will help me look for a fast computer.

  86. I thought the whole K intel processor thing was cool. I didn’t know that you could ‘unlock’ processors and ‘reprogram them how you wanted (in a way).

  87. Interesting article ! But when does Intel choose to go from 11th gen to 12 th gen ? Will the next gen also be to celebrate a new design ?

  88. Learning about the different suffixes is very interesting and valuable information for me to have. I will definitely be using this knowledge with future purchases I make. Using my computer mainly for gaming makes this information crucial for me.

  89. I learned what the suffix H means. I didn’t know that H means the processor is optimized for high performance in laptops.

  90. Heard of “overclocking “ but didn’t know you had to buy the right one to be able to get that feature out of your laptop. Always pays to pay attention to the details! Thanks for making that article for informative and easy to understand!!

  91. Is it true that one of the versions (H vs K vs HK) requires you to have a dedicated graphics card?

  92. Why do Intel processors increase by odd numbers only? What I mean is why is there an I3, I5, I7 & I9 but no I2, I4, I6, or I8? It just seems odd the version of the processor is increasing by odd numbers but the number of processors or processing power with the exception of the original single releases increases by even numbers. I’m referring to single-core, dual-core, quad-core hexa-core, and octa-core processors.

  93. I learned about the model number suffixes, H & K. And that K can be configured to go beyond the speed set by the manufacturer-overclocking.

  94. One thing we learned about Intel processors that is interesting is the info about the units capabilities in the suffixs like “H” vs “K” vs “HK”. But also what is the suffix “HX” mean?

  95. Neat article! I actually didn’t know any of this before reading up, very informative- although I don’t really understand the sku thing. Am I to assume that like the other rules of thumb, a higher number is better? What does it affect?

  96. I learnt the meaning of the H suffix. I always knew that the K meant it could be overclocked, but had no idea what the actual meaning behind H was. TIL!

  97. I learned the actual difference between the H and K. As an avid gamer I knew that many preferred the K but I didn’t understand why and now realize that it is due to its ability to be overclocked. Very informative article! Thank you.

  98. I learned what i5 vs i7 vs i9 meant, and that there is a suffix I need to pay attention to! I thought that i5 vs i7 vs i9 was about how new the technology was…. wow…. was I out to lunch or what… and I never really paid attention to the suffix. I am glad I found this contest, and I will make sure to read the articles referred to in this page.

  99. Im typing this on my Xbox internet explorer at the moment because i have no computer and my cell phone went into the ocean, but i learned that the intel Core 12th Gen processors is the performance and is better then using your xbox for social media. lol so i hope the social media gods hear my prayer that i can win an laptop. Twitter Name @Mikmaq_life #BbyIntelgamerdaysContest,

  100. Regarding processor suffix: Do processors with K, meaning you can over clock the processor have a shorter lifespan or more likely to fail sooner? And is a better cooling system therefore required?

  101. The modifier was always clear. I know that my I5 is faster than a Celeron but lags behind an I9. I never really paid attention to the suffix.

  102. I learned the difference between “H” and “K” and what they correspond to “H” for high performance, “K” for overclocking.

  103. I wondered what “h” and “k” meant..
I learned the difference between “H” and “K” . “H” for high performance, “K” is for overclocking.
    Very helpful!

  104. i have a question too, why does Intel processors use gold in threads? or every processors really has golds?

  105. Ohh… Now i know what’s the difference between H and K, H is optimized for high performance then K is Unlocked for overclocking for more power. Wished i have known this earlier

  106. I’m still confused and don’t understand the difference between cores and threads of an Intel CPU.

  107. I learned the difference between “H” and “K” and what they correspond to “H” for high performance, “K” for overclocking.

  108. Question: “If all the laptops have the same/similar processors, what are the actual differences between laptops? Is just design/branding that makes them different, assuming the same intel core?”

  109. I had no idea there was an i9 now, I can only imagine the performance. How many cores does that contain?

  110. Today i learned that the K model is the one unlocked for overclocking, and not all models are able to be overclocked!

  111. I didn’t know the difference was between the H and K in the suffix….this is good to know….thank you

  112. Very important, it will determine how your applications run depending if you need the fastest cpu or something more moderate. In my experience a 6 core 12 thread CPU is a happy medium for gaming and productivity.

  113. Here’s something I found interesting about these Intel 12th-gen processors — they use a Performance Hybrid Architecture that combines Performance-cores (P-cores) and Efficient-cores (E-Cores) to deliver balanced single-thread and multi-threaded real-world performance. They will also deliver tasks to the cores that are most efficient for the specific process.

  114. I learned the difference between “H” and “K” and what they correspond to “H” for high performance, “K” for overclocking.

  115. From my own personal experience (if price is an issue) an i5 processor should be fine for editing photos and light graphic design for the web. Where you may find issues are with large video files, etc. If I had to do one or the other I would get more ram and go with an i5 rather than go with an i7 and have less ram.

  116. The number of CPU cores is generally even (2, 4, 8, 16). Intel didn’t want to confuse the brand number (i3, i5, i7) with the number of cores, so they used odd numbers only.

  117. The post teaches about H, K, and HK, but I’ve seen it end in KF, for example, 12900KF. What does the F mean?

  118. I learned that K means the processor is unlocked, and can be configured to go beyond the fastest specifications set by the manufacturer.

  119. I learned the difference between H and K and what they correspond to. H for high performance, K for overclocking.

  120. The H K and HK abbreviations are very interesting. Thank this is going to help my research for a new gaming laptop.

  121. Main difference is how powerful the gpu (Graphics processing unit) is. A gaming laptop will usually have a dedicated gpu separate from the cpu to handle 3d tasks which ups the cost and will require better cooling then what most regular laptops have.

  122. Learned the difference in nomenclature of the processors. What H, K, and HK is. This help me better understand what process I should look for because I’m a gamer and want maximum performance.

  123. Thanks for the chance to win this amazing prize BestBuy! Being a computer programmer myself, I still learned a lot from this fascinating article, including the speed and reliability differences between newer models, and the benefits with upcoming i12 processors I think we can all be excited for. Keep up the great work Intel

  124. The architecture of the 12th gen processors is interesting, especially from the point of context of a gaming laptop that you might want to use for less intensive workloads some of the time to benefit from the better battery life.

  125. I just learned what K, H and HK mean in the model numbers.
    H – optimized for laptops
K – unlocked (good for gamers)
    HK – both

  126. Which processor is better for everyday use + using an app like photoshop? I do some edits for my photography and light graphic design for web. Would i5 do the trick or I should upgrade?

  127. I learned that the h is for high performance and the k means it is unlocked to go beyond the manufacture spec

  128. Why do the Intel CPUs only use Odd numbers? i5, i7, i9? What’s the reason behind avoiding even numbers? Is there one?

  129. Not normally. All chips in the same series are the same, but are tested and sorted by performance. They have the iGPU on the chip, but sometimes it is disabled.

  130. Honestly never fully understood the Skus naming of the cpu’s intell now, (haha get it). I’d watched a few videos on YouTube to see if they could help but none of them had a diagram as helpfull as the one in the blog. Now I fully understand why the core i9 12000K is king.

  131. Honestly, it all depends on what make/model your mother board is. From my experience, most i7 to i9 cpu upgrades are fine/compatible with the same motherboard as long as is not a low end kind. If you drop your make and model of the mother board I can check for you.

  132. I’ve been hearing great things about gaming laptops for mobile/online businesses, because they can handle anything you throw at them. At which ‘power’ level would it stop being beneficial for mobile entrepreneurs and just be overkill? Thank you!

  133. How important is the number of cores the processor has? Is more always better or is it not worth it after a certain point.

  134. Like most people here, I didn’t realize H and K referred to how powerful your laptop could be. Really good knowledge for when myself or someone I know will need to purchase a laptop in the future!

  135. Never new about the H&K suffixes and how it signifies what the computer processors are tailored for from a performance standpoint.

  136. I know they are different Intel core, but does the generation affects the performance, i.e does i3 10th generation perform better than i5 5th generation.

  137. I never realized Intel model numbers have a suffix including H and K. H meaning the processor is optimized for high performance in laptops, and, K, meaning the processor is unlocked, and can be configured to go beyond the fastest specifications set by the manufacturer (i.e. overclocking)!

  138. Never really followed how they created their skus in terms of the Gen-Sku-Locked/Unlocked. That’s pretty useful to know.

  139. I didn’t know that Intel started using these new p cores and e cores on the new processors. I think it’s pretty brilliant. I wonder if 12th gen CPUs allow for better cooling because of the e cores?

  140. I never knew about the H, K & HK abbreviations. Especially how K in unlocked and you can speed it up!

  141. Why does the AMD chipset dominate the High-end CPU Benchmarks compared to Intel? Is there technology in Intel CPU’s that AMD doesn’t have?

  142. It relates to the model in the generation you are looking at. For example 11700 is 11 gen i7 and 11500 is 11 gen i5.

    Hope this helps!

  143. the abbreviation K means the processor is “unlocked” and be pushed beyond the manufacturer’s settings. Kind of like turning your amp up to 11 in Spinal Tap. Cause it’s better at 11

  144. Never really followed how they created their skus in terms of the Gen-Sku-Locked/Unlocked. That’s pretty useful to know.

  145. I never knew that about the H and K suffixes!
My kids are really into gaming, and we lost our main laptop due to moving damage, so this would be a treat to win

  146. I learned from this article on the differences between the possible suffixes available with the different Intel CPUs. I never knew they even had a HK series of processors.

  147. I learned about H vs K. I using a i7 processor to my laptop but I can’t know this H vs K but because of this article I learned that, now i want to share what can I learned.

H means the processor is optimized for high performance in laptops.

The K means the processor is unlocked, People who desire an extra edge in gaming, or want to process very demanding computing task will often turn to a K processor.

  148. Thank you! When I used to buy a laptop, I only pay attention about which version and not the suffix. Now that I’ve learned what the H and K meant, it will help me decide which suffix I need when I’m shopping for a laptop. Thanks!

  149. I learned about the suffix on Intel model numbers. The H is for High performance and the K means it is unlocked to go beyond the manufactures/spec

  150. I had heard of overclocking before for serious gamers but I had no idea the suffix H or K determined whether the processor was unlocked for the ability to do such a thing

  151. I was previously aware of the differences between the modifiers i5, i7, i9 and the 11th vs 12th generations but I did not realize that the suffix H or K also had a meaning and what that was. That is definitely something I will be looking at when choosing my next laptop.

  152. I learned that the H is for high performance and that the k means it is unlocked to go beyond the manufacturers spec/

  153. I have a question is it possible to enjoy the benefits of the intel processor to the 100 percent limit? I don’t understand all the product features that make the featured laptops which are all known to be amazing gaming machines.

I had no idea what the H and K stood for in processors and I am excited to learn that the H stands for High Performance and the K stands for the processor being able to be overclocked.

  154. How do you know it is overheating? Make sure fan on CPU is still rotating. If not try using compressed air to clean up the dust built up or replace the CPU fan

  155. I learned that Intel flagship Core i9-12900HK is the fastest mobile chip ever and I want it more than ever in my laptop if I can ever afford one

  156. I wished. Unfortunately not all parts are upgradable to the latest and greatest. For example, if you have 11th gen Intel CPU, I found out that it cannot be upgraded to 12th gen because the 12th gen uses the new LGA 1700 socket while 10th and 11th Gen Intel CPU uses LGA 1200 socket .

  157. I learnt a lot about intel processors, mostly about the suffix letters. The H, HK indicators are new to me and good information to have when shopping for a new laptop.

  158. I learned that the H stands for High Performance and the K stands for the processor being ready for overclocking.

  159. learned that I need to look for the special “K” ingredient when building my Intel pc to overclock my machine to its absolute limits and give me the best extra edge in gaming

  160. The difference between i5, i7, etc. was new to me. Higher number means higher…processing power? Higher capabilities?

  161. Just like everyone else, I had no idea about what H and K meant. I definitely need to pay attention to this when I get myself a gaming laptop because I need something that will minimize Fallout 4 crashes. SO done with console gaming!!!

  162. I learned about H vs K vs HK. I always saw those symbols, but never knew what they stood for and the differences until now.

  163. I didn’t know that Intel model numbers have a suffix and two of the most important ones for fast laptops are H and K. H.

  164. I learned the difference between H vs K vs HK.
The K processor is unlocked allowing for different configurations allowing it to be pushed beyond it’s specifications.

  165. I had no idea what the H and K stood for in processors, and was fascinated to learn that the H stands for High Performance (I want that!) and the K stands for the processor being able to be overclocked. These gaming laptops sound awesome!

  166. i learned if i want a laptop capable of playing complex games, processing large video files, or other demanding tasks then pay a little extra for a machine with a higher numbered processor.

  167. I learned what the letters H and K stand for re Intel processors, i.e. H=high performance and K=CPU is unlocked.

  168. There are some great comments here!

I learned that the the 11th generation processors, compared to 12th generation, are still amazing and very capable processors, which is good news when you are on a budget (and you have grown children)!

    @ad_langs

  169. I learned what “H” and “K” stand for, and that Best Buy doesn’t currently carry the Gigabyte Aero 16.

  170. For a basic gamer, who is kind of trying to transition from console gaming to PC gaming, what kind of model would be best to start with? The H, K or HK? I would like something that is on the cheaper end, but wouldn’t leave me at a disadvantage against other gamers.

  171. I learned that the 11th gen vs 12th gen: will be faster and more versatile than previous generations. My question is, if I get the previous generation due to budget restraints will I still have a powerful enough machine to handle the sophisticated graphics of todays games. I don’t want to be slowed down by a slower processor and would rather wait and save for the more expensive model.

  172. Heat is the enemy of electronics reliability, especially in laptops that have limited options for cooling. More performance generally means more power, which means more heat. How is Intel managing to reduce heat from its, high-performance processors?

  173. One useful thing I learned in this article was the “H” suffix for intel laptop cpu’s. At first I thought it was meant for overclocking but now I know it is meant for optimized for high performance in laptops!

  174. About the H, K, and HK suffix since I haven’t kept up with newer gens knowing they can come optimized or be overclocked.

  175. Yes, it could be. Most people who overclock their CPU’s will get a better cooler than the stock one that comes with the CPU. AIO coolers tend to be quieter than air coolers but I haven’t had one that lasted more than two and a half years. With air coolers it’s a good idea to keep a can of compressed air handy so that you can blow the dust out of the heat sink every couple of months. Dust build-up in the heat sink with cause over heating of the CPU…. so keep it clean.

  176. i have a question as a gamer myself, is it possible to enjoy the benefits of the the intel proccessor and all the stuff thats “under the hood” so to speak even if you dont understand all the product features that make the featured laptops which are all known to be amazing gaming machines? its like asking can you enjoy your brand new car even without understanding whats under the hood and how machenics work. i would love to win any one of these amazing machines myself becuase i had to give up gaming when my machine didnt have the power to play newer games. remember “half life, and mods, frontline force, counter strike, etc games by Steam. i still remember gamers tag names from back then and have had a few of them tattooed on me becuase they have passsed and because “Its More Than Just A Game!” w0000h00000 flank em watch your 6 go go .

  177. I learned about the suffix letters.. Never knew about that. The HK model indicators are really useful to know.. I had no idea!

  178. do the reboot characters live in every processor? or was it just one specific special one?
and also- why wasn’t hexadecimal more beautiful?

  179. I posted with #BbyIntelgamerdaysContest on Twitter. My channel is @FabioMarangon12, with “Feb” as nickname.

  180. J’ai appris que i5 est bon, mais pour de meilleures performances et une meilleure vitesse, i7 et i9 sont meilleurs.

  181. Intel model numbers have a suffix and two of the most important ones for fast laptops are H and K.

  182. What I want to ask is: is there any tutorial by official Intel platforms that teach us how to safely overclock our CPU? I know there are a lot of them around the web, but since it is described as a potentially dangerous practice I would like to refer to reliable sources.

  183. I learned so much about processors that I never knew about before. Intel model numbers have a suffix and two of the most important ones for fast laptops are H and K. H means the processor is optimized for high performance in laptops. The K means the processor is unlocked. My next gaming laptop will have a HK Intel Processor!!!!!!

  184. What’s the most important aspect when shopping around for a gamer? My kids are but I am not and do not know what to look for.

  185. That’s generally the case, that higher numbers are better. However, it’s better to look up benchmark comparisons for the CPUs themselves before deciding on one. For example, Intel were still making I7 CPUs two years ago and they still are today aswell. And so an I5 CPU from today will in general be better than an I7 from a few years ago just because chips get more efficient as new tech is implemented.

That being said, it’s better to use the model number as a frame of reference (like the 8700k) which also increase as new products are released, as opposed to i5 or i7.

  186. I learned i5 is good but for better performance and speed i7 and i9 are better. Good to know for us gamers.

  187. I learned the difference between 11th and 12th generations as it pertains to performance and speed of the processor.

  188. Modern processors will have safeties built in to prevent damage from overclocking. If you dial it in too much it will crash. If the temps are too high for your cooling it will throttle itself. So it’s safe to try some experimenting in small increments. Generally though these things will boost themselves to near peak performance- you shouldn’t feel like you’re leaving performance on the table if you don’t.

  189. I learned that Intel model numbers have a suffix and two of the most important ones for fast laptops are H and K… And that my old laptop is in need of an upgrade!

  190. I learned the difference between H and K and what they correspond to. H being more higher performance focused and K specialized with gaming needs and including overclocking.

  191. I had no idea what an intel processor was let alone H and K. This is all new to me, I need to get up to date on these things….lol

  192. I didn’t know anything about the difference between H K or HK before I read the information in the article.

  193. Wouldn’t overclocking be potentially dangerous for the integrity of the electronics in the processor?

  194. I learned that Intel Hyper-Threading Technology is a hardware innovation that allows more than one thread to run on each core. More threads means more work can be done in parallel.

  195. I learned that the K suffix means that the processor is unlocked and can be overclocked. Thanks for the contest!

  196. I learned that the numbers actually mean something. 11 in the 11900H means 11th Gen I thought it was just for a cool factor staying higher than AMD Bigger numbers means better right?

  197. I learned that the Intel model numbers have a suffixm and that two of the most important ones for fast-working laptops are H, and K. H means the processor is optimized for a high performance. As my old laptop is now getting too slow for what I need it for, this is interesting to learn. Thank you.

  198. I learned that the K suffix means that the processor is unlocked and can be overclocked. Thanks for the contest!

  199. I learned the meaning of the suffix of an Intel model number, which can help[ me to choose the right processor.

  200. I have generally had Intel processors, and it was very interesting to learn about the new ones and the different model indicators. Thanks for doing this.

  201. That Intel model numbers have a suffix and two of the most important ones for FAST laptops are H and K. H means the processor is optimized for HIGH performance in laptops. Most of the fastest laptops have this suffix…is interesting to learn this and remember this.
AND am really hoping to THIS laptop prize!

  202. I learned about the difference between i5 vs i7 vs i9. My husband always wants the fastest, but I think i5 would be enough for our needs!

  203. I didn’t know what any of the digits meant, and now in do. Pretty much the higher the number on everything the better.

  204. I was start getting confused on the different features. Now there is the I factor, which generation, and H and a K factor. With limited funds which of the 3 is the one to spend extra funds on

  205. What is the difference between an intel processor and an apple processor or are they the same thing?

  206. I learned that the latest generation of Intel processors have suffixes H, K, and HK. H means the processor is optimized for high performance, and K means the processor is unlocked.

  207. I learned about the Intel model number suffixes and that two of the most important ones for fast laptops are H and K.

  208. I learned that the prefix is the generation number! I honestly had no idea and thought the entire set of digits were just a CPU name. Now that I learned about the generation prefix, it makes it easier for me to do comparisons.

  209. What I don’t understand about Intel processors isn’t really a question about CPUs, however, Intel has never had a release with anywhere near as much untapped overhead potential as the inadvertently awesome i7-9x0s, yet in here we are in 2022 and PCMR and every cheesy PC bro Intel sponsors during #IntelGamerDays is also shilling AIOs and ridiculously lit liquid cooling loops. If I’m still running an i7-930 at 4GHz 24/7 for close to 12 years with not even Noctua’s top air cooler, AM I TAKING CRAZY PILLS?

Don’t answer that, it was a rhetorical question. Incidentally, for accuracy, heat pipes inside air coolers also contain liquid. /rant

  210. I didn’t know the difference between the H and K suffix in Intel model numbers and now I do….thank you.

  211. Is there a performance difference when an Intel processor is used in an HP, Lenovo, Acer, Dell or any other brands?

  212. Like many of the other posters, I wasn’t aware of the H and K suffix designations. I’ve never overclocked before, so an H processor would be more my cup of tea.

I do have one question. I know the cores increase as the modifier increases (e.g. i7 has more cores than an i5). If the number of cores were the same, would an i5 perform the same as an i7 or i9? In other words, is the main difference the number of cores, or do the i7 and i9 have additional features that would still lead to better performance (if the core count were the same)?

  213. Can you give examples of current games that can be played smoothly on each of the different processor types?

    That would be super helpful

  214. One thing I learn is it’s better to optimize the Intel processor with a k version vs h version for demanding tasks.

  215. Learned about the Intel model numbers suffix – H vs K vs HK. H = the processor is optimized for high performance in laptops. K= the processor is unlocked, and can be configured to go beyond the fastest specifications set by the manufacturer: the term for this is overclocking.

  216. One thing that I just learned about Intel processors that is interesting to me is that .i5 vs i7 vs i9 is indicative of better performance but also a higher price. That is important depending on your processing needs.

  217. I would love to learn more about the processes that are used in the Intel processor manufacturing. I have always found manufacturing to be very interesting.

  218. What I learned from this article that I wasn’t fully aware of previously is the processor model numbering scheme used by Intel under their identifiers H vs K vs HK. I had used to do overclocking on my desktop PC but I have not been able to do so since moving into mainly laptop usage now and days. I would love to get back into trying my hand at overclocking on a laptop with a Intel processor that can support upon it under either a K or a HK identifier.

  219. I already knew K in the processor meant its overclockable (my desktop rig has a i7-7700K. Never fully knew the H for laptop processors was high performance. Very cool! Wish everyone the best of luck in the contest!

  220. I learned that Intel model numbers have a suffix and two of the most important ones for fast laptops are H and K. H means the processor is optimized for high performance and the K means it can be configured to go beyond the fastest specifications set by the manufacturer

  221. I dont understand why the naming system appears to say the same every generation. i3 i5 but different versions each few years. It is confusing for people.

  222. I did not what H and K meant…high performance and K is an unlocked processor. I’d heard of overclocking and sort of understood what it meant, but way clearer now! Thanks!

  223. I learnt that “H means the processor is optimized for high performance in laptops.” which is good to know for sure!

  224. I have learned that the term overclocking means configured to go beyond the fastest specifications set by the manufacturer, which is for the k processor

  225. Other OSes must be optimized to handle the e & p cores. Intel launched the 12th gen with a driver for Windows which was incorporated into W10. As newer Linux kernel versions are incorporated into newer versions of various Linux distros, Linux will properly support 12th gen, but currently it’s a mixed bag. For other OSes, ask the developers.

  226. I learned that the Suffix K means the processor is unlocked and allow for even faster performance, i.e. “overclocking”.

  227. I learned that the Suffix K means the processor is unlocked and is capable for higher performance, “overclocking”.

  228. Any of the U series have the lowest TDP of Intel processors, so it “can” produce the least amount of heat for an Intel CPU.

  229. @Larry Buy a AMD processor its cheaper and better performance for the money,
Intel is like Apple you are paying for the name not the performance.

  230. I learned about the meaning of certain letters pertaining to the laptops’ processors. The letter H means high performance. Most of these laptops are amongst the fastest. The letter K means the processor is unlocked, making it easier for gamers to push thier laptop to its limits. They are perfect for gamers like myself who like to upgrade their machines. All of the laptops in this giveaway are a gamer’s dream. I would cross more fingers if I had more. Thank you for the amazing giveaway!

  231. If H is optimized for high performance and K allows overclocking – does that mean that HK or K is generally better for achieving the highest res & highest frame rates?

  232. I learned about H and K. H means the processor is optimized for high performance in laptops. Most of the fastest laptops have this suffix. The other suffix, K, is especially useful for very serious gamers or computing enthusiasts who want to push their machines to the limit.

  233. H vs K vs HK: Intel model numbers have a suffix and two of the most important ones for fast laptops are H and K. H means the processor is optimized for high performance in laptops.

  234. Interesting to learn the distinction between the H an K suffix on Intel processor. Now I won’t be making mistakes on purchasing if I’m looking for performance.

  235. Splitting up the workload helps the operating system be efficient under many types of workloads. p cores can help with heavy duty operations (gaming, rendering, compiling, etc) while less intensive operations (background operations like indexing files on your storage, moving things in and out of memory, etc) utilize e cores.

That distinction is helpful so the processors don’t get too weighted in one specific process and get overloaded when a more even distribution of tasks using different core types can help provide a more stable/smooth experience.

  236. Do the e cores and the p cores on Intel 12th generation processors work optimally for Linux or non Windows based Operating Systems?

  237. What is the best line of Intel processors for gaming?
    new devices
I learned about H and K. H means the processor is optimized for high performance in laptops. Most of the fastest laptops have this suffix.

  238. A little history for you: Back in 1971, Intel launched the world’s first electronically programmable microprocessor, the 4004!

  239. Because of this article I will consider the i9 processor when I get a gaming laptop for my son on Christmas

  240. I didn’t realize that the suffix H means the processor is optimized for high performance in laptops and the suffix K means the processor is unlocked.

  241. The best line in terms of raw performance is gonna be the newest 12th-gen i9 one, preferably overclockable. But what’s best for you also depends on your budget and what types of games you play.

  242. So this blog post explains that the suffix H means the processor is optimized for high performance in laptops and the suffix K means the processor is unlocked. What are the other suffixes and what do they mean? For example, I’ve noticed suffixes of E, F, S, T, and X. What do they mean? Are there any others? Thanks.

  243. Intel model number suffixes was interesting. It gives me a new tool to better fit my needs/ wants when computer shopping.

  244. Hi, generally, an 11th gen i7 processor and a RTX 3050 or RTX 3060 graphics card will do very well if you work a lot with creative software. 12th gen processors are really top shelf and really shine with things that require a lot of heavy rendering, like games or animation software.

  245. The suffix in the naming scheme is certainly interesting. Did not know there are K versions for laptop cpus, guess there are not that many laptops with those cpus.

  246. This was new to me Intel model numbers have a suffix and two of the most important ones for fast laptops are H and K. Didn’t realize this.

  247. Hello, the original name of Intel is NM Electronics. Named after the founders, Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore. Later they bought the name from Intelco and shorten it.

  248. I learned about H and K. H means the processor is optimized for high performance in laptops. Most of the fastest laptops have this suffix. The other suffix, K, is especially useful for very serious gamers or computing enthusiasts who want to push their machines to the limit.

  249. I had no idea the difference between h, k, and hk until now! Now I know what to look for when it comes to finding the best fit for me for a laptop! Thanks for the info bestbuy!

  250. Even though I play PC games, I will admit I didn’t know all there was to know about Intel processors and what all the letters and numbers mean.

Just from this article I learnt what the H and K suffixes mean.

    H = High Performance
K = Unlocked processor for overclocking

  251. learning about the suffix lettering on processors K is most useful for gamers who want to overclock their systems to get the most out of it . and learning more in-depth about 12th gen architecture and the split up of P cores and E cores and how the processor handles the use of those to get the most out of battery life and performance

  252. It’s so interesting to learn about the very quick advancements of our technology – I admit, I know very little about the internal pieces of my laptops, but I’ll definitely be keeping this page for knowledge when I go buy my next one! I never knew about the differences between the H vs K vs HK, and that K is the one you definitely want for gaming because of overclocking. Thank you so very much for the opportunity to win. I’m quite sure my current laptop (probably 10+ years old now!) could use a refresh!

  253. I learned that for school or work tasks and less intensive games, an i5 processor is enough, which can save me money.

  254. If you are doing basic computing tasks (for work or school) and play simple games then an i5 may be perfect for your needs and will likely save you some money

  255. One thing I learned about Intel processors that I think is interesting is the Intel model number suffixes.

  256. I had a feeling that the higher the number for the computer models, the better and faster they are.
Now I know it is the same for the letters of the model. H is before K therefore it’s a later model! #mindblown

  257. I would love to know how a processor can manage so much data?

I didn’t know the K suffix meant the processor is unlocked. Lots of new learning about H or K or HK too!

  258. Thank you so much Best Buy and Martin….another fantastic contest!!! And what a fascinating read!

    1. I have always be so fascinated by technology, especially when it comes to things like computers…..but It still boggles my mind wondering just HOW so much stuff/information, etc. can be transfored/stored in such a tiny little thing (like a processor)….and they just keep getting smaller and FASTER, etc. “HOW”?? I just can’t get my mind to “process” that 🙂

    2. I absolutely learned something new! Had NO idea that the “H”, “K” , “HK” meant High Performance and Unlockability! Very cool!

Thanks so much!…..and good luck to all!!! 🙂

  259. the one thing I just learned and very interesting is about the H verses K verses HK suffix- very interesting

  260. Let me tell you
i9 and i3 or any other processor all go thro same fabrication process, with zero difference.
The difference is faults and mistakes in each individual chips.
The chip is desighned on most powerful processor and the ones with faults are seperated out in catagories as such as i7,i5 then i3 by disabling some part in it.
So all in one its all same chip in one generation but with varing faults.

i got to know this cuz i work in geeksquad (not retail) and i see tons of chips and gpu everyday.

  261. I didn’t learn anything new, but I will share a tidbit about K processors and overclocking for those that don’t know. Yes you can overclock with a “K” processor but with that comes extra voltage which will impact your battery on your laptop and also means extra Heat so cooling becomes an issue.

  262. One thing i learnt about the intel processors today is that Intel model numbers have a suffix and two of the most important ones for fast laptops are H and K.

  263. I learned that H means the processor is optimized for high performance in laptops. Most of the fastest laptops have this suffix. The other suffix, K, is especially useful for very serious gamers or computing. That’s very helpful.

  264. H vs K vs HK. It’s nice to know what these mean just wish they meant a bit more in laptops but most don’t have proper cooling for powerful processors.

  265. I didn’t know the K suffix meant the processor is unlocked, and its specifications can be configured to go faster than the manufacturer settings.
