Every student needs technology. No matter what you are studying, what major you declared, what eventual career you are pursuing, you will be using some form of technology. And face it, new tech is better than old tech. New smartphones have better cameras and faster processing, new computers will start up quickly, run the latest software and show your work on an unbelievable display screen. Enter this contest and you can choose what new tech to buy before going back to school since Best Buy is giving away four $500 Best Buy gift certificates as the prizes.

Do all students really need tech?

Yes! There is no other answer. Ten years ago students could scrape by without a cell phone, or laptop, but not today. Tech is not a luxury, it is as necessary to an artist as a paintbrush. As mandatory for the chemistry student as a test tube. As indispensable for the English major as a dictionary. Take a look at the 360 degree video we are showing on Best Buy’s Facebook page (for mobile use this link) to see how tech is used by students studying a variety of different subjects. Then enter either on Facebook or enter here on the blog.

If you win you can use the gift certificate prize towards a new computer, a new printer, a new tablet, a new cellphone … or you might even want to get a few new pens (Best Buy has you covered with low tech writing utensils too!).

Here are the details: how to enter

On Facebook: In a comment on the Facebook post, guess what the 3 majors are of the students featured in the 360 degree video. You must guess all 3 correctly for your entry to be valid.

On the blog: enter a comment below this post telling us about your favourite back to school tech and why it would help make your school year a success. You must include the link to the product found on bestbuy.ca for your entry to be valid.

What you may win

We will randomly choose 4 entries from all valid entries on Facebook and on the blog. Each winner will receive a $500 Best Buy Gift Certificate.

The contest will run from August 14th until September 10th.

Remember you can only enter once, either on Facebook or on the blog (not both!). Tell your school friends too: if one of your school friends wins, that should earn you at least one early morning lecture of note taking so you can sleep in!

Good Luck!

  1. A tablet with a keyboard would be light enough and still good enough for the kids – who are much better at typing than at writing now! – to take the kind of notes they want to

  2. My MacBook died recently after a solid 9 years, and I could REALLY use a new one before school starts for obvious reasons!

  3. Having a brand new laptop with fast processing speeds, larger hard drive space, and top of the line graphics would be the best back to school gift from Best Buy. Especially when running various drafting and digital workstation software, I wouldn’t have to worry about losing precious time waiting for a slow boot up or loading and searching files, and I can worry about my assignments and not my computer crashing.

  6. I like apple when it was just started, my parents had bought me an ipad and I used that for browsing and in storing and playing my music, now my favorite back to school tech is to own an iMac as I am used of Apple apps and I needed this for my projects, I like designing, streaming live music and even paying video games which I cant do with my ipad. I won a laptop but its been sent to be repaired twice and to be updated to iMac is what I wish for. I love the faster processor and larger memory, my favorite is Apple iMac (MMQA2LL/A) 21.5″ Intel Core i5 Dual-Core 7th Gen 2.3GHz Computer. Hope I can really own one, I am saving towards the purchase of this.

  8. My favorite school tech

    http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/microsoft-microsoft-surface-book-13-5-convertible-laptop-silver-intel-core-i5-6300u-256gb-ssd-8gb-ram-eng-cs4-00001/10488047.aspx?

The ease of having COVERTIBLE Microsoft surface book, innovative hinge folds and detaches the Surface Book to transform from laptop, to clipboard mode, and then into a creative canvas, all in one and that’s what kids are looking right now aside from the memory and the personal digital assistant, like having a secretary included. My sons laptop does not have the ability of this kind of multi tasking so this would be the best one to own and help him more successful in his field.

  9. I would like to get a laptop for all my creative art work that I am in. I love taking pictures interior designing and food photography, I always use my tablet as my camwra and store all of the photos there and now totally no space and too slow. I am browsing your web and find below what I would like to have to help me grow more in my passion of arts. I wish from my family this for my birthday. This will be my first laptop if given the chance as I use tablets alone. THE one I pick had more storage, faster great memory and best Microsoft surface book, reviews are good as well.

  10. Computer would help me! As a teacher it would allow me to plan out activities and do research on lessons I would like to develop

  11. My favorite tech would be the Microsoft surface pro. It allows me to take notes conveniently and still lets me do everything else my desktop would normally be used for.

  12. My favourite back to school tech is the iPad Pro. The kids really love using our iPad for educational purposes and I’d love for them to have their own.

  13. This computer would be a great help for my son he needs a computer real bad. The old Dell computer he had completely crushed and is know at the recycling depot. Good luck everyone.
