Remote controlled planes and helicopters have been around for many years but they never caused the frenzy that we have seen with drones. They have invaded our psyche and become a part of our culture. This is the year that drones have emerged as a cultural phenomenon. I am currently reading Dickens’ Bleak House, an amazing story that includes many references to 19th century culture. For example, on page 344 Dickens includes in his descriptions of the Smallweed family, a family that is basically born adult, presumably skipping childhood and childish things, numerous childish games and toys that were popular in his day:

“… her twin brother couldn’t wind up a top for his life. He knows no more of Jack the Giant Killer or of Sinbad the Sailor than he knows of the people in the stars. He could as soon play at leap-frog or at cricket as change into a cricket or a frog himself.”

  2. I love the obstacle avoidance feature of the DJI Phantom 4–would hopefully help me navigate the drone with fewer accidents!

I very much like the DJI MAVIC Foldable Quadcopter Drone with 4K UHD Camera & Controller, the folder feature makes it easy to travel with, and pack into a suitcase to capture foreign aerial sights. One big feature is the ‘front obstacle avoidance’ which also helps as in Canada where I live there is allot of trees.

  23. The DJI Phantom 4 4K: what’s not to love about this? Favourite feature though has got to be the obstacle avoidance sensing system.

  30. The DJI Phanton DJ J with visual tracking and obstacle avoidance sensing system would be perfect for our eldest son. This summer he had two bear cubs visit his home. The drone would allow him to find out where the bears are so that he can keep his young family safe.

  40. I agree that, when shopping at Best Buy for a drone gift, you couldn’t do better than the Parrot Bebop Drone 2. The price is great, and it sounds like it outperforms the others. I especially like the fact that the maximum flying time is 25 minutes on a single battery charge. A good length of time for a child — or kid at heart! — to play!
