Great toys hold a special place in our hearts. They create great experiences at the time we play with them. They also leave a treasured memory that we can look back on and smile as we get older. The coolest toys do something a little extra. Really cool toys unite a generation, and sometimes multiple generations. Many of the hottest toys these days are tech toys: robots, drones etc. Which tech toy of 2016 do you think will make the biggest impression in a child’s life, or in your life? Just tell us what you think the coolest toy of 2016 is and you might win a huge trove of the newest toys from Best Buy.

There are over $12000 in toys available to be won!

bb8Every year new toys are released that have the potential to become a child’s special treasure. Best Buy carries many of these. Best Buy also has the greatest selection of tech toys. Last year I fell in love with the Sphero BB-8 App-enabled  Droid. It’s the kind of toy that will resonate in a person’s memories for decades.

(Four of the new special edition version of this droid are included in this contest’s prizes!)

You may find it difficult to decide what the coolest toy is this year. It’s not always easy to predict what will be the best toy in a given year, but really there are no wrong answers. For example, I asked my wife which tech toy she remembers as having been really cool when she was young and her answer, the Fisher Price parking garage (shown below), really surprised me! Note that Best Buy carries a Melissa & Doug version of this parking garage. I too had one of those vintage Fisher Price garages when I was young and played with it incessantly. I hadn’t thought about that toy in many years, but just the mention of it brought back a ton of great memories.

Kids nowadays may not view a parking garage as a tech toy given the options that exist. The prizes in this contest contain many of the best tech toys available in 2016. We have divided the more than $12000 in prizes into 6 toys bundles:

  1. Best tech toy this year is definitely the drones to me. Really nice to see how affordable they’ve become for families

  2. Oops, neglected to leave a 2nd comment on fav tech toy that I had growing up. Voted for the coding robot for best of this year but Colecovision was the coolest thing I played with as a kid. That’s where I learned Donkey Kong and Q-Bert 🙂

  3. Gotta vote for the robot for tech toy of the year. We have the Zoomer dinosaur which has some of these features but I suspect this FAR surpasses it if will respond to hand gestures like swipes, claps, touch, and more and react to sounds in your environment. Sounds super intuitive and our 8YO has taken several coding classes. Nothing like seeing it come to life!
Since I’m in my early 40’s, “tech” wasn’t so much a thing growing up but loved Colecovision (intro to Donkey Kong!)

  4. I think the coolest toy this year is the code-apillar! I’m excited to see stem toys that start young and really want one of these for my daughter (who turns 3 on boxing day!)

  5. DJI Phantom 4 Quad copter is super cool for 2016. Great for ‘kids’ of all ages. Even the 40 somethings wink wink.

  6. The coolest tech toy I received when I was younger was a build-it-yourself crystal radio kit. I built a radio that was able to pick up a signal from Calgary (my family and I lived in Edmonton).

  7. I didn’the receive too many tech toys when I was a kid. But the big one I remember was getting a ColecoVision. Such a change from today but just as exciting at the time.

  8. The coolest tech toy I can remember getting as a gift would be the original GameBoy. Still have that tucked away in the basement.

  9. The Parrot Mambo must be one of the most promising toys for the season. With its radical aerobatic moves and an optional cannon, I can imagine parents must be excited to have the Mambo whizzing through the living room.

  10. The coolest tech toy I ever received as a child was my Furby! I was so amazed at what it could do and still remember how excited I was opening it!

  11. The coolest tech toy for 2016 would either be the. Ew drones they have out, or the new coding toys such as the Coderpillar! So amazing what they can do now With technology and toys!

  12. I think the OSMO genius kit is coolest toy this year; It looks like hours of fun learning plus something my son(age 8) and I do together. I remember when was kid when my brother and I got one first video games that when on TV (Pacman was one games). My favourite was first tech toy was P1 computer when I was in early twenties…loll

  13. My son will be a year old in January and i would love to get him the code a pillar. I think he’d love it and play with it for years.

  14. I like the Wowwee MIP. I probably spent the most time with my Girder & Panel Hydrodynamic Building set. One could build factories and have fluids run through it. I wish that it was still available.

  15. Incredible contest! I love the coding toy – it is a fun gift but it’s also so educational! Best Buy is a one-stop shop – there is something for everyone on your list! My favorite tech toy when I was a kid was the ‘make your own radio’ kit. When we put the wires in the board and it worked it was like a miracle! I remember it vividly even though it was 40 years ago!

  16. The best tech toy I got when I was a kid was the Atari, it was awesome to watch the ball go back and forth on the TV…

  17. The coolest tech toy I received when I was younger was a remote controlled KNEX kit that transformed into 3 different things and shot darts!

  18. My sons would flip over this prize pack, specifically the Sphero Spec Ed BB-8 Droid + Force Band is on their Christmas wish list.
