Shelly’s Friday Favourite presents traditional Christmas cakes

Can I just start by saying how much I love Christmas cakes? I love how, when these types of cakes are baking, they make my house smell like the holidays, and I love how they look as pretty as they smell. Whether you dress these types of cakes up or serve them plain with just a drizzle of white icing, they’ll still be the first thing people grab from the table. Here are my absolute favourite Christmas cake recipes.

Shelly’s Friday Favourites – German Christmas

Have you ever wondered how the Holidays are celebrated in a different country? Although we always spend our Christmas close to home, I’ve always wondered what it would be like to hop on a plane and immerse myself in another culture in December. After all, that would be the best time to really see, smell, and taste all of the different goodies that are truly authentic to the places they come from.

Although I’ve opted for an artificial tree this year, I’m sticking to my plan to make all of my Holiday treats from scratch, and this week I’ve been baking Christmas tarts. Tarts of any type don’t last long in my house, so this year I’ve branched out a bit and made all of the tart recipes I normally do.

The switch to Daylight Savings time is upon us again, and as of 2 am Sunday, March 9th, we’ll be springing forward by 60 minutes. Not all of Canada participates in the Daylight Savings ritual, with Saskatchewan being the main exception as they observe Central Standard Time all year round.   Some people don’t notice the switch all that much, others will flat out tell you ‘It sucks.’ It doesn’t matter which camp you’re in, because it’s coming whether we like it or not. So how do you survive the transition to Daylight Saving time?

The phrase “starving student” doesn’t just refer to not having the money to eat, although that’s not a stretch when you consider the high cost of tuition, books, and living accommodations when you’re going away to school. Some students go hungry just because they aren’t quite sure how to quickly whip up a meal in their dorm room or first apartment.

I love fall: the leaves falling from the trees, the crisp, fresh air, and the Pumpkin Spice Lattes back in the stores. After this long, hot summer we’ve had with very little rain, I was so happy to turn the page to September. The one thing I’ve really been looking forward to is getting back into my cooking routine. We’ve been eating so casually for so long because of our home reno and the heat, I literally can’t wait to make a huge meal. What I’m not interested in is doing a lot of dishes, and that’s why I’ve been sourcing out some great one-pot meals for everyone to try.
