The Last of Us Part II

Platform(s): PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 (via backwards compatibility)
Developer(s): Naughty Dog
Publisher(s): Sony Interactive Entertainment
Genre: Action-adventure, survival horror
Modes: Single-player
ESRB Rating: M (Mature 17+)

The Last of Us Part II is one of, if not the greatest games on the PS4. The game takes place 5 years after the events of The Last of Us. Joel and Ellie return to take centre stage in the story. Where as The Last of Us centres around love, The Last of Us Part II centres around hate. As the story unfolds throughout the game, you learn via a series of flashbacks what has taken place and the consequences that ensued because of them during the past 5 years.

The gameplay mechanics have been expanded and been improved upon from its predecessor. Ellie is now the main playable character in the game, which gives you a greater freedom to explore the world around you by jumping, and climbing. Honestly, I can’t help but say enough good things about the game. If you are a fan of narrative driven games, you’ll find that The Last of Us Part II is a masterpiece in pretty much every aspect.

Originally released for the PS4, The Last of Us Part II is backwards compatible on PS5. You can read my full review here.

God of War

Platform(s): PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 (via backwards compatibility)
Developer(s): Santa Monica Studio
Publisher(s): Sony Interactive Entertainment
Genre: Action-adventure
Modes: Single-player
ESRB Rating: M (Mature, 17+)

God of War‘s story revolves around Kratos’ struggle to protect his son Atreus as a new danger threatens his family. And, given his tragic loss in Greece, Kratos refuses to let history repeat itself. Along with a closer camera position, comes entirely refreshed gameplay. God of War eschews the traditional chained blade combat in favour of more visceral, up-close combat. Your main weapon is a Norse ice axe that can be tossed or used to hack-and-slash foes. You also get a deployable wrist shield good for blocking projectiles or holding off rushing enemies.

Originally released for the PS4, God of War is backwards compatible with PS5. And, a patch has been released for the game so that it runs at 60 frames-per-second and in 4K. You can read our full review here.
