An all-new story in the Spider-Man universe
This next iteration of Marvel’s Spider-Man picks up one year after the events of the original Spider-Man on PS4. You assume the role of Miles Morales, a 17 year-old teenager, friend of Peter Parker and son of police officer Jefferson Davis.
After training with Peter for the last year to fully integrate himself as Spider-man, it’s time for Miles to conquer personal fears and obstacles to help save New York City. While I don’t want to give too much of the story away, I will say that I enjoyed the story about Miles even more so than I did with Peter Parker on PlayStation 4.
What I really liked about the story is the growth we see in Miles’ character throughout the game. He starts off as a young inexperienced teenager who is not sure of himself. He struggles with balancing support for his mother’s campaign for City Council and defending New York City from an evil energy corporation who is at war with a high-tech gang known as the Underground.
And, by the time the credits are rolling, Miles has become his own Spider-Man who is confident, self reliant and is capable of facing any challenge that comes before him on his own.
Unique super powers with near flawless gameplay
In addition to a captivating story, Spider-Man Miles Morales has equally as great gameplay. While it plays very similar to its predecessor, the gameplay execution is near flawless. What is really impressive is how vibrant and lively New York City in the game.
Your main mode of transportation is, you guessed it, via swinging high above the ground. Just like its predecessor, there is a rhythm to swinging that is easy to pick up and string moves together with ease. Miles has an all new set of abilities to master such as a bio-electric venom blast, web-slinging acrobatics, camouflage power, and new gadgets.
The game uses the DualSense wireless controller‘s haptic feedback to allow you to feel every kick, punch, venom blast, web shot and web-sling. And, the controller’s adaptive triggers do a great job of simulating the sensation of Spider-man’s webs.
If you love to unlock things in games, then you’ll be in heaven. There are tons of collectables to discover that go towards unlocking suits, modifications to your suits, upgrading your weapons and more. Spider-Man Miles Morales also incorporates a skill tree that allows you to expand your move set. By completing missions, you earn XP and points that you can use towards purchasing these buffs on the skill tree.
Stunning next-generation visuals and sound
In addition to a great story and equally great gameplay, Spider-Man Miles Morales‘ visuals do not disappoint. The game features two graphic settings: Fidelity Mode and Performance Mode. Fidelity Mode runs at 4K 30fps with ray-tracing and Performance Mode runs at 4K 60fps.
Each mode is equally impressive but I particularly liked and played the majority of the game with Fidelity Mode. Not only does it offer improved lighting, shadow and character detail, the reflections on and in buildings with ray-tracing is simply amazing. New York City has never looked better at Christmas time!
In addition, the game makes excellent use of the PS5’s SSD. Never in my life have I seen a game load as fast as this does. It’s virtually instant and something you have to see to believe.
Furthermore, the sights and sounds of New York are a sight to behold. The game uses 3D spatial audio that allows you to hear your surroundings from the rooftops to the city streets. Voice acting is top notch, and even the city’s inhabitants share their thoughts and comments with you. Overall, Spider-Man Miles Morales’ presentation is top notch and is another element that kept me playing for hours on end.
Spider-Man Miles Morales is one of the PS5’s biggest launch titles
I have no doubt in my mind that Spider-Man Miles Morales will be one of the top selling games this holiday season. It includes a fantastic story, great gameplay, and a stellar presentation. It does a great job in using the DualSense wireless controller‘s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.
In addition to the main story, there is quite a bit else to see and do in the game. You can expect the main story to take somewhere in the neighbourhood of 10-12 hours to complete. With the additional content taking several more hours to finish.
Overall, I’m super impressed with the work that Insomniac Games has done and can hardly wait for Miles’ next adventure!
+ Incredible story that will keep you on the edge of your seat
+ Near flawless gameplay
+ Great use of the DualSense wireless controller’s capabilities
+ Incredible use of the PS5’s SSD for near instant loading
+ Plenty to see and do after you have beat the main story
– Some side missions are uninspiring
– Gameplay doesn’t do anything innovating
