Nintendo Switch Lite

After many months of speculation, today Nintendo announced the Nintendo Switch Lite. This latest member in the Nintendo Switch family is designed specifically for the gamer on the go and plays games in handheld mode only. Priced at $259.99, the Nintendo Switch Lite is considerably cheaper than the standard Nintendo Switch.

With over 34 million units of the Nintendo Switch sold worldwide since its launch in March of 2017, the Nintendo Switch Lite is guaranteed to be one of the driving forces of sales this fall and holiday season.

So what makes the Nintendo Switch Lite different from the standard Nintendo Switch? Let’s take a brief look to find out!

Nintendo Switch Lite launches September 20, 2019

The launch of the Nintendo Switch Lite is just around the corner, September 20, 2019. As I mentioned above, the Nintendo Switch Lite is made for gamers on the go. It is a dedicated handheld device so you won’t be able to play games on your TV. Furthermore, the controller is now integrated into the Lite’s body—so you won’t be able to detach them.

As a result, the Nintendo Switch Lite only plays games that support handheld mode. HD rumble, and the IR Motion Camera aren’t included on the Nintendo Switch Lite. This means there are a very small number of games that will require you to pair Joy-Con Controllers to the Nintendo Switch Lite if you wish to play them.

This includes games such as 1-2 Switch, Super Mario Party, Fitness Boxing, and the Just Dance series of games. You can easily tell if a game supports handheld mode by looking at the back of the game or the game’s page on the Nintendo eShop. Click here for a full list of Nintendo Switch games avilable at Best Buy Canada.

The Nintendo Switch Lite will be available in three different colours: yellow, grey and turquoise. After looking at the three available launch colours, I’m still trying to decide what colour I like best. Currently, I’m leaning towards turquoise but you never know it might change!

Light, compact and made for on the go

Recently, when asked, many Switch gamers revealed that they mostly play Switch on the go undocked. So, it was only natural that Nintendo would release a model in the Nintendo Switch family that was geared for gamers who play on the go.

As a result, the Nintendo Switch Lite is even lighter and more portable than ever. Let’s take a look at the main features and specs of the newest Nintendo Switch family member:

Nintendo Switch Lite specs and features

  • Screen: Captive touch 5.5-inch LCD touch screen with 720p resolution
  • Storage: 32 GB internal system storage
  • Weight: approximate weight of 275g
  • Size: 91.1mm x 208mm x 13.9mm
  • CPU/GPU: NVIDIA customized Tegra processor
  • Increased battery life between 20-30% more
  • Traditional D-Pad

As you can see the Lite’s screen is smaller compared to the 6.2-inch screen on the Nintendo Switch. Additionally, the Nintendo Switch Lite is lighter and smaller, which makes it exceptionally easier to take with you on the go.

  1. I am really unfamiliar with the switch and actually came to look at switch vs 2DSXL and I saw this. Looking as an Xmas gift for my son. He has a PS4 and is happy with it but I really feel he’s missing out on the whole Mario experience. If I’m reading it correctly, most of the switch games play in this as well? And can you play online with this as well?

    • As a 16 year old who is somewhat interested in video games, I think he couldn’t care less about the Mario experience lol… In my opinion, Mario has died down recently and unless he wants to play the latest Mario Maker 2, and you have money to spend, I really think he is fine with the PS4.

  2. Please forgive me as I don’t know much about the original Switch so this question may seem silly to some. My daughters have downloaded a number of games for their Switch, versus purchasing the actual game cartridges or whatever you call them. Will they be able to transfer those downloads to the Switch Lite or can you only use the cartridges?

    • Hi Michelle,

Yes you will be able to transfer your purchases from one system to the other. I recently went through this process and it was nice and easy.

You’ll need both systems side by side and plugged into a power outlet. Additionally, you will need an internet connection so that both systems can connect to the internet. You initiate the system transfer on the “old” Switch and then it will ask you to start the transfer on the new Switch. The entire process took about 10 minutes for me. After that you can redownload the games from the Nintendo eShop free of charge.

      • Hi Michelle,

To clarify, I recently did the transfer between two Switch systems and it took approximately 10 minutes to move my account over. The Nintendo Switch Lite should be around the same time. I’ll let you know as soon as I get my hands on a Switch Lite in the coming weeks.

    • I guess this comment is irrelevant now, since the article has been updated. I hope everyone finds the Nintendo Switch Lite that they are after!

  3. Your latest flyer says the OG Switch is on it’s last week at $379.99. does that mean that the new model will go back up to the original $399.99 and pre-orders will start on Aug 2nd?

    • Hi Ryan,
Yes the price of the original switch will return to the regular price by Aug 4, 2019. As far as the new Switch Lite, we have not received any preorder details yet at the blog.

      best regards,
      Martin

  4. I plan on buying 2 for my grandchildren not for special occasions but just because they’re awesome kids and I know they’ll love them

  5. I have large hands. The 2ds made my hands ache. Will this be similar? The original switch for comparison is just perfect for my hands only a little discomfort. Do you have any insight on how the lite will hold up for people with big hands?

  6. Between the switch and the switch Lite, the switch does not remain a better choice? I don’t quite understand the interest of choosing the Switch Lite, if it offers similar possibilities (or even, more restricted…in my opinion) than the original. It looks like a marketing move, nothing more.

    • Hi Belisle,

The Switch Lite is geared for those who don’t want to hook it up to a TV and want to always play portable. It’s just another option to choose from. Additionally, it’s quite a bit cheaper. The Switch Lite isn’t right for everyone but now it opens up the doors to even more gamers who don’t need all the features of the OG Switch and at a discount.

  7. So it’s basically a new Gameboy, or DS with one screen, that plays switch games.‍♂️
It’s not really a “Switch” if there’s no “switching” as the namesake implies.. is it?
Absolutely bizarre that they would take away that entire feature, and have no tv connectivity.

    • Hi Dave,

The Switch Lite is a part of the Nintendo Switch family of systems. Much like the Nintendo 2DS is part of the Nintendo 3DS family of systems.

  8. The Switch Lite looks really cool. Originally I expected that it would still be able to connect to a TV through the Switch dock, but it kind of makes sense that Nintendo would want to try and avoid confusion with the original Switch. I really like the look of that yellow model, and that it has an actual D-pad. For the most part I haven’t had a problem with the controls on the joy-cons, but I do miss the D-pad.

Since this launches the same day as The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening the only think missing is some sort of Zelda or Gameboy themed model coming out that day.

I’m excited to see what Nintendo will come out with next.

    • Hi Ian,

Wow that would be a great idea! A Zelda themed Nintendo Switch Lite would be awesome! Who knows what Nintendo has up their sleeve it just might happen someday. I think the Nintendo Switch Lite will be really good for new Switch owners and also as a second machine for existing Switch owners. My daughter has been wanting to pick up a Switch for a while now and as soon as she heard about Switch Lite she wanted to know when she could pre-order one 🙂
