Original story set in DC’s Batman Universe
In Gotham Knights, you are thrust into the story of a new take on the DC universe with the death of Batman. With Batman gone, Gotham needs new Superheroes to step up and fill the void. Gotham City has always been a place where villains constantly threaten the safety and livelihood of its citizens. And, in Gotham Knights, following the deaths of Police Commissioner Gordon and Batman, the city is in the midst of a violent crime wave.
To help citizens of Gotham City protect themselves from the various threats that are threatening their safety, four iconic DC SuperHeroes step up to protect their city. Red Hood, Batgirl, Nightwing, and Robin do whatever it takes to keep the city and the people of Gotham safe.
One of my favourite things about Gotham Knights is how well each character is written. As a team, you’ll carry on the legacy of Batman and protecting the citizens of Gotham City for various Villians such as Harley Quinn, Mr. Freeze, and the Court of Owls. While the story and the setting of Gotham Knights is not as polished as those of Rocksteady’s previous titles, there is a lot of interesting nods to the DC Comics lore.
Explore and fight crime in an open-world Gotham City
In Gotham Knights, you can explore the city’s dark streets and face off against various villains. There’s also plenty of fun to be had collecting various items and upgrading your heroes. Aside from the story missions, Gotham Knights also has numerous areas that are lacking in content. These include anticlimactic confrontations, repetitive objectives and areas that are not designed to provide you with anything to do.
I found the combat system in Gotham Knights not as effective as it should. This is mostly due to how repetitive the encounters are in the game. And, combat is not designed to evolve as the game progresses. Despite this, I found that the game’s story, co-op play, and various characters are some of the reasons that action fans will want to pick up this title.
My favourite gameplay mode in Gotham Knights is its multiplayer co-op mode. Here, you can take down enemies together with your friends. In addition to being able to coordinate your attacks with friends, you are able to improve your skills and solve puzzles in a more efficient manner than by yourself.
There are several ways to make your way around Gotham city but my hands down favourite way is via the Batcycle. It allows you to get around the city faster and more efficiently and makes you actually feel like you are part of the city. Though I would have liked to see the ability for more upgradable options.
Somewhat disappointing game performance
I played Gotham Knights on Xbox Series X and visually the game looks sharp with detailed models and high-res textures. Oddly enough, there are no graphical mode options in the game as we have seen on many other recently released titles and Gotham Knights is locked at 30fps. Seeing as the game is designed for Xbox Series X|S, PS5 and PC only, I was shocked to see some areas of the game contain slowdown. Despite various performance issues, Gotham City looks great and it still has its moments.
On the other hand, the audio and sound design of Gotham Knights is top-notch and adds to the overall experience of the game. Whether you’re riding the Batcycle or taking down enemies using powerful combo attacks, the audio can be great.
Gotham Knights is packed full of action but has some performance issues
Overall, I feel that Gotham Knights is an entertaining and action-packed game. Despite the various performance issues there is still fun to be had and at looks sharp on Xbox Series X|S. I really like that Warner Bros Games Montreal has designed gameplay so that Gotham Knights can be played solo or by teaming up with a friend for two-player co-op action.
Hopefully some of the performance issues can be resolved with future updates. I would love to see some additional DLC released to help flesh out the overall story of the game and add some variety to gameplay.
