Great toys hold a special place in our hearts. They create great experiences at the time we play with them. They also leave a treasured memory that we can look back on and smile as we get older. The coolest toys do something a little extra. Really cool toys unite a generation, and sometimes multiple generations. Many of the hottest toys these days are tech toys: robots, drones etc. Which tech toy of 2016 do you think will make the biggest impression in a child’s life, or in your life? Just tell us what you think the coolest toy of 2016 is and you might win a huge trove of the newest toys from Best Buy.

There are over $12000 in toys available to be won!

bb8Every year new toys are released that have the potential to become a child’s special treasure. Best Buy carries many of these. Best Buy also has the greatest selection of tech toys. Last year I fell in love with the Sphero BB-8 App-enabled  Droid. It’s the kind of toy that will resonate in a person’s memories for decades.

(Four of the new special edition version of this droid are included in this contest’s prizes!)

You may find it difficult to decide what the coolest toy is this year. It’s not always easy to predict what will be the best toy in a given year, but really there are no wrong answers. For example, I asked my wife which tech toy she remembers as having been really cool when she was young and her answer, the Fisher Price parking garage (shown below), really surprised me! Note that Best Buy carries a Melissa & Doug version of this parking garage. I too had one of those vintage Fisher Price garages when I was young and played with it incessantly. I hadn’t thought about that toy in many years, but just the mention of it brought back a ton of great memories.

Kids nowadays may not view a parking garage as a tech toy given the options that exist. The prizes in this contest contain many of the best tech toys available in 2016. We have divided the more than $12000 in prizes into 6 toys bundles:

  1. I love the Sphero BB-8 App-Enabled Droid.. I have seen it in action and I know it is definitely different from other toys.

  2. I would have to say that my boys would probably think the Razor scooter is the coolest this year. I think the coding toys are neat bt have to admit I have no idea how to code so it would be a steep learning curve for me as well

  3. I’m not sure if it falls into the tech toy category but my favorite toys growing up were Legos. I amassed about 10kg of them over the years. My kids played with them as well but i think I was a little to sentimental about them and had too many rules, so it wasn’t as fun for them.

  4. The coolest tech toy I received as a kid was a Furby… That I treated as a real baby alien thing for the longest time lol Still have it 🙂

  5. Personally I think the code-a-pillar is my favourite. Coming from a programming back ground it would be awesome to be able to have a fun way to teach my daughter some programming.

  6. my best tech gift as a child would have to be the Nintendo original..even though I hardly ever got to play case I was so bad at it and my brothers turn always lasted forever….I’d love to have the new mini to show my kids old school

  7. I think the hottest tech toy of 2016 is going to be the sphero Bb8. My son receive a sphero toy three years ago and it had mesmerized everyone with what it could do. Now the new sphero is a Star Wars Droid and has more cool features.

  8. My favourite tech toys from childhood were my tamagotchi, a stop-motion camera that hooked up to the computer and our Sega Game Gear.

  9. I would say the Osmo Genius Kit or other Osmo coding and math kits are the best and kid friendly ways to introduce kids ages 6+ to coding.
They are a tad expensive so i hope i can win these and maybe introduce my own kids to the wonders of programming.

  10. I think the code-a-pilllar is a really cool tech toy. I love that it’s appropriate for 3 and up, though my daughter would definitely say the drones are the coolest. She loves it when we see someone flying them at the park.

  11. I was a kid in the 1960’s so tech didn’t really apply to toys then. I’d have to say pre-Tech was an Etch-o-sketch or a Spirograph.

  12. The coolest toy available now is a Dash and Dot robots and the Osmo Genius kit!
As a child I loved the original Lite-Brite!

  13. While I definitely loved playing with my Sega and computer games throughout my childhood and teenage years, when I was little I had a Jill doll. She would talk and move her arms and legs, which was pretty good for the early 80s!

  14. The coolest tech toy I got as a kid was the original Nintendo way back in 1986, when I was 6 yrs old. That thing made my whole childhood amazing <3

I can't wait to get my hands on the new Nintendo Classic!

  15. I love that there are more and more robotics and coding toys. I teach computer science and it’s great to see kids learning at such a young age. After watching my grade 12s having so much fun with a sphero the other day I’d have to pick that as the best thing.

  16. The coolest tech toy I received for Christmas when I was younger was a Sega game console. This was the original Sega console System. It came with the Light Phaser gun!! Oh the good old days!! Hahaha! That system was fun in the 1980’s!

  17. My favourite tech toy as a kid was my N64. My whole family worked together to hunt one down for me when they were sold out everywhere at Christmas.
