Great toys hold a special place in our hearts. They create great experiences at the time we play with them. They also leave a treasured memory that we can look back on and smile as we get older. The coolest toys do something a little extra. Really cool toys unite a generation, and sometimes multiple generations. Many of the hottest toys these days are tech toys: robots, drones etc. Which tech toy of 2016 do you think will make the biggest impression in a child’s life, or in your life? Just tell us what you think the coolest toy of 2016 is and you might win a huge trove of the newest toys from Best Buy.

bb8Every year new toys are released that have the potential to become a child’s special treasure. Best Buy carries many of these. Best Buy also has the greatest selection of tech toys. Last year I fell in love with the Sphero BB-8 App-enabled  Droid. It’s the kind of toy that will resonate in a person’s memories for decades.

You may find it difficult to decide what the coolest toy is this year. It’s not always easy to predict what will be the best toy in a given year, but really there are no wrong answers. For example, I asked my wife which tech toy she remembers as having been really cool when she was young and her answer, the Fisher Price parking garage (shown below), really surprised me! Note that Best Buy carries a Melissa & Doug version of this parking garage. I too had one of those vintage Fisher Price garages when I was young and played with it incessantly. I hadn’t thought about that toy in many years, but just the mention of it brought back a ton of great memories.

Kids nowadays may not view a parking garage as a tech toy given the options that exist. The prizes in this contest contain many of the best tech toys available in 2016. We have divided the more than $12000 in prizes into 6 toys bundles:

  2. When I was a kid, the coolest tech toy i received was a remote controlled car. It had big studded tires so it could drive over rocks. I had so much fun with it!

  3. I would have to say the coolest tech toy this year is the Osmo Genius. I want to get one for my son, I think he would have a blast with it.

  5. I think that the coolest tech toy available at Best Buy in 2016 is the Parrot Mambo, it is not something that I would want, but something that I know all the kids would want this year. Being an older adult, I really love the Sphero Spec Ed BB-8 Droid + Force Band, but I loved R2D2 too, LOL!

  6. The best tech toy we ever got was the sega mega drive the year we got this when I was a child was very rememberable because we had no electricity and were unable to play it so spent the day playing monopoly!

  7. The coolest tech toy I received when I was a kid was a Meccano set. Personal computers didn’t exist back then so we had use our imagination and build things.

  8. Since my baby is still very young, I think fisher price code-a-piller is the coolest tech toy for him. It will help him learn cause and effect very well and help him understand power of technology as much as he can at that age.
    The coolest tech toy when I was young was I think, a handheld video game with snakes game on it 😀

  10. I think the coolest tech toys are the drones. What person doesn’t want to fly something around the neighbourhood.

  11. In my opinion the YUNNEEC TYPHOON 4K is one of the coolest toys of 2016. I wish we had toys like this when I was a kid.

  12. For the favourite in 2016 – I’d have to vote for the flying drones. This technology has come such a long way in such a short time. Definitely very cool.

  14. Wow, I received an etch-a-sketch and thought it was really cool, you could draw and erase and draw again, such “modern” technology ;).

  16. Tech toys when grew up weren’t connected to an App or Phone. Rather they were more focused on design and building. For me the ‘Fischertechnik’ sets were always a hit. Getting from A to B wasn’t really the aim of the toy – rather exploring other ways to get there, usually with some really interesting side effects.

  19. This Sphero BB-8 App-Enabled Droid with Star Wars Force Band would be the Best choice for my son who has been hooked on all the Star Wars movies.

  20. Coolest toy I received as a kid has got to be my mini arcade games..Donkey Kong and Pacman and I had an electronic pinball machine game too which I loved.

  21. I would choose the Ultimate Drones for my grandson (7), the Coding toys are great too.
    My immediate memory of my childhood toys was of a science experiment kit. Pleasantly thinking back on toys .

  22. I think the most tech savvy gift for 2016 is The Sphero BB-7 App enabled Droid. My 5 kiddos would have so much time playing with it. I think my favourite techy gift I got as a kid was the Nintendo NES. I really miss it. The hours my family spent playing on it together are seriously some of my favourite memories.

  23. Drones are super cool this year. Really picking up popularity since last year and have come a long way in comparison to the many Air Hogs toy planes and helicopters over the years.

  25. Growing up my favorite tech toy was a tie between my easy bake oven which I used as much as my mom would let me and my Nintendo. Even if my younger brother was better at all the games.

  28. The coolest Roy of 2016 would be the STEM learning connect fisher price catipillar. I’ve heard that adults are even playing with them after their kids have gone to bed. With three little ones myself under the age of 6, I think they would get so much use out of it. Definitely on my list for this year, Just hoping I can get to it before they sell out… or winning this contest would be even better!
    Low income family doing the best to give their kids the best Christmas they have had so far. Price of the hottest toys are just crazy though!

  31. There wasn’t a lot of tech around like now but my first thing I remember getting was probably my Sony Walkman with a bon jovi cassette tape. It was awesome!

  32. The coolest tech toy I received as a child was a hand held hockey video game. I’m not sure who made it, may have been Coleco. Very basic but loved it.

  33. I think the best tech savvy gift for 2016 is the Sphero Spec Ed Bb-8 Droid. It looks so cool. My 5 kids would have a blast playing with it. My favourite techy gift I got as a kid I think was The Nintendo Gaming System. Boy how I wish we still had it. The hours my family spent playing on it. Are some of my favourite childhood memories.

  35. The best gift would’ve been my big remote control H2 hummer. Was one of the hottest toys that year. Also always loved my lite-Brite, I think it was played with the most.

  37. The coolest tech toy is the Osmo genius kit. My boys are both under the age of 8 but they would love it. It’s both fun and educational. What more could a mother want.

  40. I think anything that feeds their imagination is the best toy, it brings a new unexpected use and the toy comes to life for the child. My daughter has special needs and although we usually buy educational based toys I believe something just for fun is as important and think she’d love either the bb8 or robotic dog.

    The present that gives me finest memories is an 80s home computer. I remember my parents helping use my imagination to get it to draw pictures, create simple games and playing games a well.

  44. My favourite toy growing up that was given to me were Wwe action figures, the best was on Christmas one year when I got the actual wwe ring with ropes and ladders and chairs

  46. The WOWWEE coder MIP for the best tech toy of 2016. My favorite tech toy was Playstation when it first came to the scenes.

  48. Coolest/most impact in toys this year looks like the broad range of coding toys. These are definitely starting to make an impact in schools everywhere at every grade level so will likely send kids adding to their wish list to be able to play and learn more about programming at home.

  50. I think the coolest of them all are the robotic toys! Because you can interact with it like human beings and that what makes it thr coolest!
