Last week, I wrote about how ergonomically designed office chairs are essential to rear-end comfort and back health. However, even the most fabulous, most space-aged, most comfortable chair in the world means nothing if you’re sitting in front of a desk that is made from a sheet of plywood and two milk crates. So, with that in mind, I thought I’d write a follow up post that highlights some great desk and workstation options available at Best Buy.

But first, let’s quickly define what makes a “great desk” and why having one in your work or home office can actually increase productivity.

  1. Desk Height – When you are seated, the height of your desk should be in line with your arms when they are bent at a 90-degree angle. If this means your feet are no longer flat on the floor and your legs no longer parallel with the floor, you should consider a footrest to achieve the proper posture.
  1. Leg Clearance – A well-designed desk will provide you with adequate space for your legs and all the cords and cables that come with your computer components and accessories. You should be able to sit with your legs extended in front of you, not twisted to the side to accomodate needless barriers or cords.
  1. Desk Space – Working on a surface with limited space may cause you to work in awkward positions, which can cause stress on your back, neck, and joints. Plus, smaller surfaces have a tendency towards clutter, which is rarely conducive to productivity, so opt for the largest desk you can, given the room dimensions you are working with.
  1. Desk Depth – Your computer monitor should be no less than 20” from your face to reduce eyestrain, so it’s important the desk you choose is deep enough to accommodate.

Now that we’ve reviewed the basics of what makes a good ergonomic chair, here are some fantastic options to consider.

Monarch 3-Drawer Office Desk

I LOVE the look of this desk. With its natural reclaimed wood finish and silver metal frame, it’s the perfect combination of modern and rustic and would be a great addition to almost any décor. Its desktop is a broad 60” wide by 30” deep making it ideal to house all your computer components and position your monitor ergonomically, while leaving ample room for a writing surface, and accessories like a lamp and a clock. Perhaps best of all though is its integrated filing cabinet – three drawers to store all sorts of unsightly clutter? Yes please! Oh, and did I mention you can place the drawer cabinet on either the right or left hand side of the desk? That’s all sorts of awesome.

Monarch Space Saving Nesting Desk

This desk is ideal for smaller spaces, rooms that serve multiple purposes, and laptop users. The top table is narrow enough to fit in a hallway and can be used to display photos and other personal items, or even your computer monitor. However, keep in mind this part of the desk is only 19” deep, so you’ll need to place your monitor at the very back to avoid eyestrain. When it’s time to work, you can simply slide out its retractable desk on its casters and start typing away. Finished working? Just slide it back – out of sight, out of mind.

Prepac Floating Wall-Mounted Desk

Another option for smaller spaces is this floating desk from Prepac. Because it has no legs, you can mount at a height that suits you and only you! While you’d have to do some handiwork to ensure the cords from your computer components aren’t a tangled mess on your wall, this desk does come with plenty of storage space to keep you organized. It’s also very unique, so sure to be a conversation starter at your next party.
