When I first joined a gym earlier this year, my friend smirked at my high school locker-like combination lock that I used to secure my items in the gym locker. I thought about it and kicked myself for not thinking of investing in a smart lock that would make the process so much easier.

You don’t need to worry about combination codes and turning a dial back and forth to unlock it: ones like the Tapplock Lite Smart Fingerprint Scanning Bluetooth Rechargeable Padlock simply use your fingerprint via biometrics. Place one of these in your gym bag and it will track the location should you forget it at home, the office, or at the gym. Use your phone to see where it is if it’s within Bluetooth range, or even if it isn’t using the network of Tile users from around the world. The new Tile Sticker can actually affix to an item like your true wireless earbuds charging case or headphone ear cups to you can ensure you never accidentally leave them behind, or that you can find them if you do.

I’m a fan of Fitbit smartwatches and fitness trackers, as noted in my previous article. What I love about models like the Versa and the Ionic is the large screen that can be used not only to present your fitness stats and details like your heart rate, smartphone notifications, daily steps,  and the time, but also visual guidance for workouts. I’ve used a number of the coaching exercises, which range from short, 7-minute workouts to longer, more intense ones. They demonstrate what to do, with video instructions on how to do it, indicate how many reps, than the watch vibrates on your wrist to let you know when to start, then again when you’ve completed the necessary number of reps or the time noted has elapsed. You can also manually track exercises like swimming, running, and interval workouts.

Garmin has devices that can monitor specific workouts as well, like running. The Forerunner 35 GPS Watch adds, as the name implies, GPS so you can locate your position and follow a route. You can also get smart coaching through the app.

The Muse 2 Brain-Sensing Headband is an interesting gift option for the person who’s into health and fitness but also wants to make sure they aren’t overexerting themselves. Having enough sleep and reducing stress, after all, can play a big role in improving your level of fitness, too. It provides real-time feedback on brain activity, heart rate, breath, and body movements and helps you wind down through meditation.

  1. A fitness tracker is a definite must-have if you’re a runner, just be sure to get one of the ones that has a watch face since the stop watch comes in handy (as well as the zillion other features like GPS tracking).
