A Creality set of printers at a Best Buy holiday event.

What if the best gift you give this holiday season is one you make yourself? With a 3D printer, you can turn a thoughtful idea into something personal, from glowing decorations to one-of-a-kind keepsakes and family games.

At the Best Buy Creator Catalyst 2026 event, I got a firsthand look at just how creative 3D printing can be. Creality showcased its range of 3D printing hardware, including the K2 3D printer, alongside projects that went far beyond what I thought a 3D printer could make. The showcase inspired me to think about the personalized gifts and decorations I could make for the holidays. Here are ten creative ideas that caught my attention, along with the 3D printers and accessories that can help bring them to life.

Bring the holidays home with 3D-printed decorations

1. Christmas tree tea light holder

This little Christmas tree had a clever surprise. Place a battery-powered LED tea light inside, and the light shines through the tree’s cutouts, projecting stars onto the walls and other surfaces around it.

There are plenty of ways to personalize this design. In your design, you can swap the stars for snowflakes, add someone’s initials, or print a few in different colours for the dinner table or mantel. Just remember to stick with LED lighting; an open flame and standard 3D-printed plastic are not a safe combination.

2. Colour-changing Christmas tree lamp

Another favourite of mine was a contemporary Christmas tree lamp with a geometric, sculptural design. Its polygonal surfaces caught the light from a colour-changing LED puck tucked into the base, creating a different effect with every colour. It would look right at home on a desk, bookshelf, or alongside other holiday decorations.

3. Snowflake fidget spinner

Some of the best stocking stuffers are quirky and unexpected. Creality’s two-tone snowflake fidget spinner is fun, festive, and small enough to tuck into a stocking or give away at a holiday party.

You can print it in someone’s favourite colours, or make a batch so everyone can choose their own. Add a small hole for a ribbon, and you can turn it into a Christmas tree ornament, too. One design, two uses. It would be fun to let kids pick their colours before printing, then watch their creations come to life.

4. Textured winter photo artwork

Another display gave photography a tactile twist. The Creality representative started with an image of a red truck in the snow and added raised texture, giving the winter scene extra depth.

That sparked a few gift ideas. A family photo from a winter trip, a picture of your pet, or a favourite snowy landscape could all become personalized artwork. It’s a fresh way to turn a favourite photograph into something more tactile, with raised details that give the finished artwork the appearance of an oil painting.

5. A custom 3D-printed photo frame

A custom frame pairs beautifully with textured artwork and makes a manageable first project. You can make a frame with snowflakes along the border, raised lettering with a family name, or little details inspired by the person receiving it.

Imagine printing a frame in your parents’ favourite colour, adding a family photo, and wrapping it up as a thoughtful holiday gift. It’s simple, useful, and much more meaningful than another generic frame from the store.

6. Custom collectible figure

This was one of the most memorable keepsakes at the event. Creality demonstrated how AI-powered design tools can transform a photo of a person or pet into a cartoon-style character that can then be printed as a collectible figure. Imagine giving a friend a mini version of themselves holding a game controller, or creating a playful figurine of a family pet.

7. Pet-inspired keychain

If someone on your list adores their dog or cat, a custom keychain can be a lovely surprise. Creality demonstrated how to turn a pet photo into a small printed keepsake for keys or a bag.

Add the pet’s name, choose a colour that reflects its personality, or print one for every family member. Every time someone reaches for their keys, they’ll have a little reminder of their furry friend.

8. An airless basketball

I’ll admit, I didn’t expect to see a basketball made with a 3D printer. But with flexible materials such as PEBA, makers can explore projects that go well beyond traditional rigid plastic prints. Creality used PEBA, a flexible material with rubber-like qualities, to create an airless ball that doesn’t need inflation.

A project like this would be particularly interesting for sports fans or more experienced makers who want to explore unusual materials. Flexible filaments require compatible equipment and careful settings, and a printed ball may not behave exactly like a regulation basketball, but it’s still a very cool novelty gift.

9. DIY Portable Electric Keyboard

The musical keyboard felt like the perfect holiday-break project. Using a Creality Maker Kit, you scan the QR code, download and print the required parts, then assemble them with the electronics included in the kit. You get to build a working toy instrument.

I especially liked the educational side of this project. Kids can see how a printed design connects to real electronic components while building problem-solving and STEM skills. With adult help where needed, it could brighten a winter afternoon.

10. Personalized chess set

A 3D-printed chess set combines two things I love about holiday gifts: creativity and time spent together. Imagine chess pieces inspired by rival sports teams, favourite characters, or an entire fantasy world. Printing the board and pieces would be a project in itself. Kids can also try designing their own unique pieces. Then gather around the table for a holiday match.

Getting started with 3D printing for holiday gifts

After seeing everything Creality had on display, one of my biggest takeaways was that you don’t need to be an expert to start exploring 3D printing.

If you’re completely new to the hobby, it’s worth checking out Best Buy Blog’s guide to everything you need to start 3D printing at home. It covers the basics, from selecting a printer and choosing materials to preparing your first project.

Creality 3D printer options

Whether you’re printing simple decorations or experimenting with more detailed, multi-colour creations, choosing the right 3D printer can make a difference. Here are a few Creality options to consider.

For beginners, an accessible option like the Creality Ender-3 V3 SE 3D printer offers automatic bed levelling and a straightforward way to explore everyday prints.

For more ambitious holiday projects, the Creality K2 Combo 3D printer bundle adds multi-colour printing through Creality’s filament system. This is particularly useful for decorations and personalized gifts that combine several colours in one design.

If you want to print larger decorations or projects with more substantial dimensions, the Creality K2 Pro Combo offers a larger build area, along with multi-colour printing capabilities.

Filament for your 3D creations

Of course, choosing the right printer is only part of the process. The filament you use also affects the colour, finish, strength, and flexibility of your creations. For decorative projects, PLA is a beginner-friendly material to explore. Creality Hyper PLA filament in green, red, or white offers some festive colour options for holiday decorations and other seasonal creations.

Not sure which material is right for your next creation? Best Buy Blog’s 3D printer filament guide explains the differences between common materials and helps you select the right one for your project.

Get creative without starting from scratch

You also don’t need to design everything from scratch. You can explore online libraries of printable 3D models to find designs for decorations, toys, organizers, and other projects. Many designs can also be customized, allowing you to change their size, add text, or experiment with different colours before printing. Starting with a simple ornament or keychain is a great way to build confidence before tackling something more elaborate.

Ready to try 3D printing at home?

Exploring these creations reminded me that some of the best holiday gifts aren’t necessarily the biggest or most expensive. They’re the ones that reflect the thought, creativity, and personal touches that went into making them. If these projects have sparked your creativity, explore Best Buy Canada’s selection of 3D printers and accessories and discover what you can create this holiday season.
