Brave the dangerous frontier in Horizon Forbidden West

Horizon Forbidden West takes place 6 months after Horizon Zero Dawn. Aloy has travelled west to San Francisco to investigate a mysterious and deadly blight. On her journey, she meets strange new tribes and encounters deadly machines. Together with old friends and new companions, she must brave the dangerous frontier to find the answers she needs to save life on Earth.

During the 14 minute footage shown a few months ago we learn quite a bit about the game. We saw Aloy send her friend Erend into the remains of San Francisco to recover an important artifact. Unfortunately, he quickly runs into trouble as he encounters a rebel faction of the Tenakth tribe. These vicious fighters have acquired the power to override machines and Aloy must cross the ruins and fight enemies to rescue Erend and continue her journey.

New tools, weapons and enemies

In the gameplay footage we saw that Aloy has new tools to make her way through the terrain. The Pullcaster speeds up climbing; the Shieldwing allows her to safely descend from great heights; and the Diving Mask allows her to explore a whole new underwater world. Additionally, there are upgrades to her Focus, which now show areas that allow free-climbing and give her the ability to override more machines for mounts or combat.

Furthermore, the gameplay in Horizon Forbidden West puts emphasis on tactics and choice with a huge variety of weapons. For example, Aloy’s trusty Spear is perfect for close combat and enables a new set of combos. And, bows with specialized ammo types strip armour off machines to expose weak spots. Plus many more and all of them can be upgraded at a workbench.

Horizon Forbidden West also features a new selection of deadly machines such as Sunwings, Clawstriders, Tremortusks, Snapmaws and Burrowers.

  1. Preloading off PSN today, but also hoping for early code since I’m helping the GG team for something through my work and they noted my interest. 🙂

  2. This is the game I’m really looking forward to playing the most!
Building upon what made the first one great is a good move – hope this one will be just as successful than the last 🙂

  3. Seems like with the Valor moves that they’re taking notes from other 3rd-person action titles where you build up a special moves meter, e.g. Spider-Man’s Focus/Venom, AC Odyssey’s Adrenaline, God of War’s Rage, etc. I’m glad they’re making melee combat more useful and interesting this time around! One of the best things about the first game was how many different ways players could handle a fight and having even more options and versatility is going to be awesome.

  4. I’m curious what the difference between the PS4 and PS5 versions of this game will be. I assume at baseline, the ps4 version will be 30 fps while the PS5 will be 60 fps and have greater graphic fidelity. I just hope creating the game for both consoles will not hold back what the next generation of games can be, but I have to assume big ideas were at least limited in order to make sure this runs on old-gen hardware.
It makes complete sense that they would want this to be playable on a PS4 though, considering how massive the install base is as well as covid limiting the amount of PS5 consoles being produced. On top of that, the economic effects that have been placed on people due to the shutdowns reducing excess spending money for non-essentials.

It looks pretty good so far. Hopefully it reaches and exceeds the bar the original game set!

  5. This game and Zero Dawn look amazing. These are some games that make me want to get a PlayStation! Thanks for the article Jon, I definitely want to see more of this!
