Immortals of Aveum features a fantastical world

The game is set in the world of Aveum, a sacred realm where powerful mages, known as Arcanists, defend the land. The region has been carved up by thousands of years of conflict, referred to as the “Everwar.” The two central warring sides in the conflict are Lucium and Rasharn. Each look to put a stranglehold on the supply of magic, thus controlling the world. A new dark figure has arisen in Sandrakk using his power to push Lucium to the brink of destruction. Playing as Jak you are joined by The Immortals that represent the pinnacle of Lucium’s Magni military forces. They are an elite group of magic wielders dedicated to engaging in dangerous operations and executing high-stakes covert missions.

A magic-driven FPS action adventure game

Immortals of Aveum features a story-driven campaign that tasks you with harnessing your magical powers. You’ll need to do so to overcome the forces of Rasharn. The game’s unique twist comes in the form of a mixing of the first-person perspective and the use of magic. So far it looks incredibly fluid with bloom and particle effects around the casting of attacks looking stunning. The seamless first-person spellcasting combat system is designed to be easily accessible. Both combat and defensive strategies rely on magic as the foundation of the game. You can wield a trio of magical forces to unleash powerful chained assaults and counterattacks.

Immortals of Aveum features a vast arsenal of spells

Through in-game progression, you can unlock and enhance more than 25 Spells and 80 Talents. Along with magical powers you can also uncover, and hundreds of pieces of enchanted equipment to further strengthen your arsenal. Jak wears a Sigil, which is a gauntlet that allows him to focus on three different colours of magic: blue, red and green which all carry different attributes. Each magic colour serves a distinct purpose, catering to different combat styles and strategies. Blue magic specializes in long-range assaults, akin to scope sniper-like precision strikes. This allows you to take down enemies from afar instead of diving headlong into battle. Red magic delivers devastating close-range damage spray-style damage obliterating adversaries nearby. Green magic offers a balanced approach, unleashing a relentless stream of magical projectiles. Think of it as the “heat-seeking missile” of magic that can hone in on a target, ensuring consistent damage at different distances.

Call of Duty with Magic

The team behind the game, Ascendant Studios was established by a seasoned group of developers who have worked on renowned franchises such as Dead Space and Call of Duty. They aimed to replace the guns in COD with magic in Immortals of Aveum. They also looked to create a large rich campaign that offered plenty of areas to explore and big action set pieces. The first look at the game certainly looks impressive, and I can see the DNA of COD with a hint of magic.

Immortals of Aveum powered by Unreal Engine 5

Immortals of Aveum will be one of the first AAA games released on Unreal Engine 5. This will bring massive technical and visual improvements to all platforms that you play on. There are enhancements in lighting, physics, and other visual effects. This attention to detail aims to create a greater level of immersion while adventuring through the world of Aveum. As Chief Technology Officer Mark Maratea on Immortals of Aveum explains,

“Some of the ideas the team would throw out there, we just wouldn’t have been able to do it, because we didn’t have the technology. ‘Hey let’s have a 400-foot walking mech level, in the ocean, and we can have the mech come under attack from airships, and you’re fighting inside the mech, and you’re fighting on top of the mech, and maybe you almost fall off the mech at one point?’—and it would be like, ‘How would we ever make that a reality?’ But that level is in the game. And we hope players think it looks amazing.”

Summer Game Fest offers the latest look at Immortals of Aveum

At Summer Game Fest Darren Barnet the voice actor for Jax took to the stage to discuss some of Immortals Of Aveum’s features. It looks like there’s a lot in store for players, from intense action, and great acting to massive levels. Barnet described Jak as a “triple threat”: being able to wield all three types of magic.

Barnet also highlighted Jak’s backstory and what makes him unique as a character. He described him as a “street rat” that becomes part of the Immortals after accidentally discovering his magical abilities.

In the latest look at the game, we saw Jak and the Immortals take on a massive mech in the middle of an ocean. The group confronts Sandrakk atop a 400ft robot in an attempt to end the Everwar. The gameplay showed off incredibly fluid movement, an abundance of spell-casting and some truly awe-inspiring visuals. From the look of things, Immortals of Aveum is shaping up to be an intense and exciting experience.

Jax brings a unique flair with his backstory and ability to wield a wide range of magic.
