Developer CD Projekt RED gave us a deeper look into the world of Cyberpunk 2077 today with “Night City Wire.” The livestream event was packed with new information around the game and some completely unexpected surprises. It definitely took the sting out the recent delay that now has the game arriving November 19, 2020.
Get ready Samurai, we’ve got a ton of new Cyberpunk 2077 content to explore!
Your legend begins
A new story trailer gave us more tidbits on what to expect when the game drops in November. Elements around the open world, characters, story, and gameplay are here! Playing as “V,” the main protagonist, you are on the hunt for the key to immortality. The trailer kicks off with a heist to steal a biochip that gives the host a fountain of cybernetic youth. Things get complicated as you try to steal the chip from the heavily fortified Arasaka megacorporation. Everything goes sideways and anarchy ensures with gunfights, hand-to-hand combat and a car chase. Check out the new trailer below:
Building a more deadly you
During the live presentation, the game’s lead Quest Designer Pawel Sasko went more in-depth with the story and modifying your attributes. As V, you will be taking on contracts in order to earn money or, Eddies to upgrade your cybernetic assets. You can buy implants that improve your strength, reflexes, charisma, intelligence and more. It’s all about cybernetically augmenting yourself and choosing upgrades that match your playstyle.
A cyberpunk braindance
We got our first look at the “braindance” mode within the game, allowing players to virtually step into someone else’s shoes. This mode lets you see the world via a NPCs memories, reliving their experiences and exploring virtual surroundings. The augmented reality interface lets you piece together a character’s backstory by recovering their “recording implant.” The trailer ended with the virtual appearance of Johnny Silverhand. His experiences are most likely connected to you via this neural interface.
A vast open world
Before today’s Night City Wire, we only had seen areas that were densely populated cityscapes. The new desert-terrain known as “The Badlands” looks like one of the biggest yet. The environment is a big departure from what we’ve seen thus far, swapping out urban areas for wide open desert.
This region surrounds Night City and is so big, it encourages you to explore more with vehicles. It’s a futuristic dust bowel that nomads call home. Sasko confirmed that specific missions will bring you out of the city to explore this desert territory. You’ll even have access to various radio stations as you cruise around similar to the Grand Theft Auto series.
New faces in unfamiliar places
In different districts you’ll need to work with factions to make life easier. One key exchange will be with members of “The Mox.” This clan deals with nightclubs and other forms of adult entertainment. CD Projekt RED teased that you will develop a unique relationship with them during the course of the game. Different Ripper Docs will also be available around Night City to augment you with various body upgrades and mods.
Adam, smash!
We also got a first look at Adam Smasher, a massive all-metal cyborg. The gargantuan enforcer is a fan favourite from the pencil-and-paper tabletop game. He looks like a character you don’t want to mess with, but it is more than likely you’ll have a few run-ins.
Cyberpunk Edgerunner anime announced
In addition to the game, a new anime series is coming to Netflix in 2022. CD Projekt RED must have been encouraged by the success of The Witcher live action series and brought Cyberpunk into the fold. Japan-based animation company, Studio Trigger will helm the project which will introduce new characters into the Cyberpunk universe.
A multi-generational experience
With CD Projekt RED working hard to bring us a fully realized experience this winter, excitement continues to grow. The efforts to expand the Cyberpunk universe with its own Netflix series in 2022 also shows long term commitment to the franchise.
Cyberpunk 2077 is coming November 19, 2020 to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. The game will also be released for Stadia, PC, Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 with a free upgrade for players that upgrade to next generation consoles.
