A Sony Bravia QD-OLED TV in a living room.

With so much 4K content at your fingertips nowadays, it’s worth it to invest in a 4K TV. That’s especially since 4K TVs have come down considerably in price. But not all 4K TVs are made equal. Some boast additional features and technologies to enhance the viewing experience. There are ones that highlight affordability for secondary viewing rooms like the basement, kids’ room, or dorm, and others that commit to a cinematic experience at home. You’ll find features with some models that are tailor-made for activities like movie watching or gaming.

It’s wise to go with a 4K TV even if you don’t subscribe to 4K content just yet. This will futureproof your investment. And there are some key considerations to make when choosing a 4K TV. First and foremost is picture quality, ensuring it is worth the investment for an upgraded picture. There’s also screen size, display type, special features, smart TV interface, and, of course, price. See our 4K TV buying guide for more assistance in what to look for to meet your needs.

Have more questions? We have answers!

What does 4K mean?

4K refers to the pixels on a TV, at 3,840 x 2,160. That’s four times the resolution of traditional 1,080p. The more pixels you have, the more detailed and vivid the picture on screen is. While there’s a lot more that goes into providing a fantastic picture, 4K resolution is a good starting point. Most sources nowadays offer content in 4K resolution. See our 4K TV buying guide for more detail.

What’s the difference among LED, OLED, QNED, QLED, miniLED, and others?

TV terminology and acronyms can be confusing, and we break it down for you in a handy guide. In short, LED TVs are an affordable option with backlights either across the entire screen (full array) or around the perimeter (edge lit). OLEDs are more expensive but have individual pixels that light up on their own to provide deeper contrast, brighter whites, and true-to-life blacks. QLED TVs use quantum dots, tiny semiconductor partners to emit precise colour when hit by light, providing great colour accuracy. Neo QLED TVs add mini-LED backlighting to traditional QLED TVs for better brightness, contrast, and detail. QNEDs are an LG exclusive and combine quantum dots with NanoCell technology for improved contrast and dimming.

Mini LED has smaller backlight LEDs for a further improved picture while microLEDs, a relatively new technology, has self-lit pixels for incredible precision in picture reproduction. There’s also QD-OLED that combines the best of OLED and QLED technology. RGB LED TV is the newest option that affords even richer colours, higher brightness, and improved accuracy, but its availability is limited for now.

How do I know which size 4K TV to get?

To determine what size TV is best for your room, you need to measure for viewing distance. Take the distance in inches from the seating area to the screen and divide it by two. If you’re sitting 10 feet (120 inches) from the TV, for example, a 60-65-inch screen would be ideal.

What do I need to get 4K content?

Having a 4K TV alone doesn’t give you 4K content. You need to have a 4K content source. This can include the 4K tier of your streaming service. Many, like Netflix, have “good, better, best” subscription options, with the highest tier being the one with 4K. Others, like Apple TV, offer all content in 4K at the singular subscription option. If you subscribe to linear TV, you need a package that includes 4K channels and tune to one of those. You can also enjoy 4K content from a connected device, like a video game console or Blu-ray player with a 4K disc. Make sure that when you set up your 4K TV, you have quality HDMI cables that can handle the transmission of 4K signals and audio.

Can you watch non-4K content on a 4K TV?

Yes! Many premium TVs even have upscaling that will improve the picture for non-4K content so you get a better experience than with a 1,080p HD TV.

Open a new window to your entertainment world

With a premium model from a brand like LG, Samsung, or Sony, you get an incredible picture along with a convenient smart TV interface. How we decide what’s best

At Best Buy Canada, curating a “Best of” or “Top X” list is a thoughtful and transparent process. We evaluate products based on brand reputation, popularity, customer interest, and relevance within their category. Our bloggers then bring deep product knowledge and hands-on experience to help identify the best options for you.

Testing goes far beyond unboxing—products are used in real-world scenarios, with our bloggers putting themselves in your shoes to better understand how a device or accessory performs day to day and whether it meets expectations. Where possible, they compare similar models and assess key factors such as design, performance, and category-specific features to offer well-rounded, informed recommendations. For niche or new product categories where broader hands-on testing might not be possible within that category as a whole, our skilled bloggers evaluate the products using every objective method they can.

In some cases, a blogger may not have direct experience with a specific product. When that happens, they draw on broader expertise, such as time spent with comparable items, an understanding of the brand’s current lineup, and its overall reputation. We also draw on insights from Best Buy’s in-house category experts and aggregate feedback from both trusted reviewers and customer ratings to make the best selections.

We’ll always be clear about the basis of our recommendations—whether they stem from first-hand testing or extensive research. Authenticity matters to us. Every “Best of” guide is built on objective insights, product knowledge, and a commitment to helping you make confident buying decisions.
