Great toys hold a special place in our hearts. They create great experiences at the time we play with them. They also leave a treasured memory that we can look back on and smile as we get older. The coolest toys do something a little extra. Really cool toys unite a generation, and sometimes multiple generations. Many of the hottest toys these days are tech toys: robots, drones etc. Which tech toy of 2016 do you think will make the biggest impression in a child’s life, or in your life? Just tell us what you think the coolest toy of 2016 is and you might win a huge trove of the newest toys from Best Buy.

bb8Every year new toys are released that have the potential to become a child’s special treasure. Best Buy carries many of these. Best Buy also has the greatest selection of tech toys. Last year I fell in love with the Sphero BB-8 App-enabled  Droid. It’s the kind of toy that will resonate in a person’s memories for decades.

(Four of the new special edition version of this droid are included in this contest’s prizes!)

 

You may find it difficult to decide what the coolest toy is this year. It’s not always easy to predict what will be the best toy in a given year, but really there are no wrong answers. For example, I asked my wife which tech toy she remembers as having been really cool when she was young and her answer, the Fisher Price parking garage (shown below), really surprised me! Note that Best Buy carries a Melissa & Doug version of this parking garage. I too had one of those vintage Fisher Price garages when I was young and played with it incessantly. I hadn’t thought about that toy in many years, but just the mention of it brought back a ton of great memories.

Kids nowadays may not view a parking garage as a tech toy given the options that exist. The prizes in this contest contain many of the best tech toys available in 2016. We have divided the more than $12000 in prizes into 6 toys bundles:

You can submit a maximum of 2 entries for this contest.  In a comment at the bottom of this blog article, tell us what you think is the coolest tech toy available at Best Buy in 2016.  In a separate comment, tell us about the coolest tech toy you received when you were younger.

  5. The coolest toy is for sure the sphero BB-8!
    The coolest tech toy I ever got was an electronic dear diary. It was like a mini computer (minus the Internet). For the early 90s, I thought it was an awesome tech toy.

  7. The coolest toy I got when I was young–actually it was for the family was Nintendo & the great games like pac-man, donkey kong and of course pong!

  9. My parents didn’t believe in electronic toys (I was born in 1970) so cannot answer that one. But I will say that I totally wanted the Easy Bake Oven all my friends got – there is part of me that still wants one LOL

  17. The coolest gift I think is the remote control Drones, One is the DJI Phantom 3 Quadcopter dRONE AND cAMERA, NOW WHAT KID WOULDNT WANT A dRONE, tHEY ARE SO INVITING, SO MUCH ENTERTAINMENT AND FUN

  18. I think the coolest tech toy in 2016 is the quad copter drones (Galileo) . We didn’t have anything like that when I was younger lol

  19. I think my coolest tech toy when I was growing up was my little game boy!! It was amazing what it could do and super convienent for on the road !!

  22. My fave tech toy when I was kid has to be my Teddy Ruxpin animatronic bear. I waited so long to get my hands on one of these, and it made me the happiest little boy on the block!

  23. It’s hard to choose the coolest tech toy for 2016, with so many awesome advancements in technology and toys in the past year. I would say my must-have is the Yuneec Typhoon Q500 4K Quadcopter Drone. Drones are such a game changer.

  24. When I was younger Lego was pretty cool but even cooler was a toy you could really build with and that is Meccano.

  25. The ultimate drones are so incredibly cool. Fantastic fun is what everyone wants most and these amazing “toys” are also an opportunity to learn some of the latest technology. Fun that could even lead to a business. How cool would that be? I would love to win the ultimate drones package. Please Santa, I’ve been good.

  26. The coolest tech toy is one of the earliest presents I remember getting as a child, and it would have to be the Super Nintendo. Ill never forget going down to the corner movie rental store, and renting UN squadron every single weekend

  32. I’m fascinated with drones and would love the Mambo Quadcopter! Pretty sweet! As a kid, my best tech toy was a set of 1980 model radio shack walkie talkies. Not bad, but I was gotta admit I was secretly kinda jealous of my brothers’ remote control cars and train sets. My dad made a traditional Christmas Eve run to Radio Shack for our tech toys and we looked forward to Christmas Day like nothing else because of it!

  36. The coolest tech toy of today has to be the drone. They are all cool, but especially the ones that you can program to follow you while you are in motion.

  40. I was born in 1959 so we did not really have any tech toys way back then. I did receive a doll that said pre-recorded sayings when you pulled the string on her back. I guess that was as high tech as it got back in the 60s.

  41. Coolest Tech Toy is the BB-8. My husband would go banana bonkers if I was able to win one for him. Yes, he is 57 years old and LOVES StarWars and all the things that go with it!!!

  42. I think the coolest toy is the coding caterpillar. What an amazing idea. It’s great to see more toys are are interactive and stimulating. It’s also an added bonus of it has to be used outside.

  49. The coolest Tech toy I remember getting was a gift I had to share with my brother. It was a Merlin The Electronic Wizard Red Handheld Video Game by Parker Brothers. Look it up! It was fun and challenging . . . for back then!
