As adults, we play in many different ways and in many different forms—from building intricate LEGO sets to going to an escape room or enjoying a monthly game night with one of Hasbro’s classic board games. Why are toys and games important?

Games are how we learn to create social bonds, destress, develop creativity and problem-solving skills, and perhaps most important of all, have fun. We know that play is important for us as adults because we learn these things as children. These days I nurture my inner child by building 3D puzzles and going down slides in playgrounds (when there are no kids around of course), but you can just as easily throw paint at some paper or play a series of harmless pranks on your partner around the house.

Kids’ brains are unique and still forming and so need a lot of stimulation in order to develop neural pathways and thinking patterns that they will use in adulthood. That’s why children cannot just sit still and only do one thing for too long. They need toys to help them catch glowing fairies in a jar or stage a race between Mario and Luigi plushies. This helps develop their imagination, and what is creative thinking in adulthood, if not imagination?

Give your kids the skill of play

And that’s understandable—responsibilities of life get in the way. But just like taking a vacation or meditating is hugely important and beneficial to our mental health, playing—or to put it another way: doing an activity purely for your own joy and delight, not productivity—is hugely important too.

That’s why we have hobbies! You can make sure your child grows up with the skill of play (and it is a skill because the more you do it, the better you get at it, and the easier it becomes to integrate into your life) by giving them good memories of playing. Entering this contest is easy and you can enter in three different ways.

  2. Explore our Toys for All Ages page and in a comment below this article, tell us which toy category you’d be interested in shopping from for a child in your life.
  3. For up to two (2) additional entries, create a public post on a social media channel (one entry per channel!) sharing with your friends and followers that you are entering a Best Buy blog contest for a chance to win a holiday toy package; include the hashtag #BestBuyHolidayToyContest2022, so we can find your post, and include any one of the pictures showing on this article. Then return here and tell us in a comment below on which channel you posted it and the name of your channel (since many people use pseudonyms) so that we can check and verify your entry. You can use any social media channel (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, etc.), but the post must be public so we can verify it is there.

  24. I would like the kool karz bumper car for myself…too bad they dont make them big!! I also would love the marble the marble rush ultimate set as i think it is something the whole family would enjoy!!

  33. For my grandson who loves board games, I would go with The Nightmare Before Christmas Merry Madness Board Game in the Board Games, Cards and Puzzles category!

  38. I would like to shop in the Educational and Learning Toys category. As a child I really enjoyed playing with these types of toys, and I am sort of jealous of the selection kids have today! I also love to share the love of learning when possible.

  39. We love the toys in prize 13 & 14. Some of the sets seem a bit young for the kids. The Miko 3 AI Robot seems like a great learning toy. The LEGO Technic: All-Terrain Vehicle seems like an advanced building toy that the boy would absolutely adore!, The kids love playing Mario games on their switch, so the LEGO Adventures with Luigi Starter Course would be a hit, as would the Little Buddies Mario Plush. Finally, we can all play Hasbro Battleship, a classic!

  40. I would shop in the Retro Gaming category for my son. I love the Arcade1Up Ms. Pac-Man and Galaga Class of ’81 Arcade Machine with Riser.

  49. I’d love a Little Buddies Isabelle Plush for myself and include her with my video game plushie collection!
