bedding

I absolutely hate being cold—especially this time of year when I’m at home curled up on the couch with a good book or movie, or trying to fall (and stay) asleep in bed. Add to that the fact that I live in an old apartment with single-pane windows and am a typical west-coast baby when it comes to the cold, so needless to say, when the snow starts to fall and the temperatures start to drop, my supply of extra bedding and blankets makes its way out of my linen closet and into my life to ensure winter warmth.

A basic blanket is a winter warmth must have

When I was growing up and would complain about being cold, my parents would tell me to put on a sweater or grab a blanket. At the time, I thought they were the meanest parents in the world, but now that I’m an adult and pay my own bills, I find myself doing exactly that when I get chilly at home. Don’t get me wrong, my heating bills are pretty low, but there’s something to be said about getting warm with a cozy blanket that just screams “winter!” while simultaneously saving money on utilities.

faux-furI’m a firm believer that you can never have too many blankets. The key though, is to ensure you have a variety of sizes and warmth levels. My go-to when I am on my couch is my faux fur throw, similar to this one from St. Pierre Home. Not only is it so soft that I find myself petting it from time to time as I would a dog or cat, but it is so warm and cozy that I sometimes don’t want to tear myself from my couch to go to bed at night.

If faux fur is a little too toasty warm for you, another great option is a wool throw, which breathes a bit more. I bought my favourite wool throw in Peru (insert snobby emoticon here), but this merino wool/mohair throw is a close second. Because it’s made primarily with merino wool it is nice and soft, and adds a punch of style to any couch or sofa.

Bedding that will keep you warm this winter

This past summer I bought two things for my bed after a friend, who grew tired of my complaints about not being able to fall or stay asleep, recommended them to me; and I am so grateful for them this winter.

duvetThe first thing I purchased was an all season duvet cover similar to this one from LuxeportZEN and it’s probably the best thing I’ve bought for myself in years. An all season duvet like this literally wraps you in luxury, while naturally wicking away moisture from your body so you stay comfortable and warm through the entire night. I for one, can attest to the fact that since I’ve replaced my old comforter with a new all season duvet, I’ve slept better and stay warm all night long even though it is ridiculously cold outside.

The second item I picked up (at a rodeo of all places!) was a set of bamboo sheets like these from Home Aesthetics. Initially I bought my bamboo sheets because I needed a new set but more than that, I thought it would be a funny story to tell that I picked them up at a rodeo. However, I quickly learned why bamboo sheets have the reputation they have. Not only are they ridiculously comfortable, they keep me cool on warm days and warm on cool days. Of course I also have an extra cozy blanket on top of my duvet that adds a little extra warmth when I am calling it a night.

There are many ways to stay warm in the winter months but sometimes, good old fashioned blankets and bedding are the way to go. For other ideas on how to stay warm this winter, check out my other posts in this series:
