If you’re not sure what to get Mom for Mother’s Day, here are a few classic and unexpected Mother’s Day gifts to show her you appreciate her.

7. The standard for Mother’s Day gifts: a fancy vacuum

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a human being in possession of a living space, must be in want of a wife really, really, really nice vacuum.

Seriously, I’m not even joking. I don’t have a single friend or family that doesn’t sigh wistfully when faced with the prospect of a top-of-the-line Dyson. (Well, except my mother, but a) she’s extremely practical, and b) she already bought herself a top-of-the-line Dyson. Her wistful sighs, or lack thereof, do not count.

My family has the Dyson Big Ball, a canister vacuum that’s easy to maneuver and very compact. For when I have to do the vacuuming, though, I have my eye on the Dyson V8 Animal Cordless Stick Vacuum. Sticks are just so much lighter and easier to push around, and Dyson’s is designed to be balanced and lightweight enough that you can vacuum floor-to-ceiling with it.

If your mom needs less to do around the house, though, there’s always a third option: a cleaning robot. No, I don’t mean Rosie the Robot Maid; I mean an iRobot Roomba. The iRobot Roomba 761 Vacuum Cleaning Robot features dual HEPA filters, automatic scheduling for unsupervised cleaning time, and counter-rotating brushes. It’s one of the best Mother’s Day gifts for saving time, and she’s certain to love it!

6. A new stand mixer for Mom

If your mom is an avid cook or baker, a stand mixer is a kitchen must-have. I’m a big fan of the KitchenAid line, and their KitchenAid 2 Speed Immersion blender is both functional and pretty swanky, if I may say so myself.

There is so much you can do with an immersion blender, and it’s never too late to give Mom a nice little appliance upgrade!

5. A top of the line video game console

Who says the cool toys have to be left to the boys? Moms need “me time” just as much as the rest of us, and that time isn’t all bubble baths and foot massages. (Although those are nice, too. Definitely don’t cut those to make room for video games.)

A top of the line video game console like the Playstation 4 is a great way to treat your mom for all of the hard work that she does. It’s one of those mother’s day gifts that keeps on giving, because it helps mom improve her reflexes and gives her a great reason to spend time with the family. Co-op games (whether that’s Super Smash Bros. on the Wii U or Borderlands 2 on the PS4) are a great option for family bonding, and they’re not just for the kids!

Plus: have you ever seen a technologically-awkward 50-something slowly master a video game? That experience alone is worth the cost of a new gaming system.

4. Really, really nice earbuds

I gave my mom a super-swanky set of wireless Bluetooth earbuds last month, and now that Mother’s Day is coming up, I’m kind of regretting it. I should have waited!

Really nice earbuds (or headphones) like the Beats by Dr. Dre BeatsX In-Ear Bluetooth Headphones are a treat that Mom is bound to enjoy, but likely won’t splurge on for herself. They make a fantastic gift for Mother’s Day, her birthday, or Christmas, but I like them best for Mother’s Day. A little bit of a mid-spring indulgence is a nice pick-me-up for such a busy season, and they’re a gift that’s practical, too.

3. Fashionable Mother’s Day gifts

If your mom’s a fashion fiend, she’s sure to appreciate a few new accessories as her Mother’s Day gift. I love the idea of getting Mom one big ticket item (like a designer handbag or a piece of jewelry), but a few smaller items can be even more fun.

A coordinating tote and wallet combination, for instance, gets her ready to take on the day as-is. Or, if you’re ready to get creative and mix categories, a handbag makes an amazing gift when paired with a beautiful, matching scarf!

The Fossil Emma RFID Smartphone Wristlet is one of those basic Mother’s Day gifts that combines the classic with the fashionable. It’s covered in hearts, but it’s not too kitschy. Plus, with its RFID-blocking design, it’ll hold her smartphone and her plastic to keep her belongings safe.

2. Something sparkly!

Jewelry is one of the most classic Mother’s Day gifts, and it has yet to reach its own exhaustion. A tennis bracelet or necklace makes a great Mother’s Day gift from the whole family, and you have plenty of options when it comes to style.

I’m loving simple pendents right now, and if they’re in rose gold, even better. This Rose Gold Chain with Diamond & Morganite necklace really stood out for me, because I’m loving rose gold, and I’m also all over morganite right now. Its natural pink tones are just so lovely and springy, and the sparkle of a piece of Morganite that has been cut well is just entrancing.

If you’re a fan of the classics, though, a simple Diamond and Freshwater Pearl Necklace is another great option, as is a heart-shaped pendant like this 10K Yellow Gold Chain with Gold Heart Necklace. (How cute is the detailing in that heart?)

1. An automatic coffee maker

You know what’s even better than jewelry? A good night’s sleep. 10/10 people surveyed agree! (Disclaimer: only one person was surveyed, and it was me. But I asked myself ten times, and lo and behold, I came up with the same answer each time!)

You can’t give someone a good night’s sleep, so instead, give mom the gift of caffeine. Sweet, merciful caffeine.

The classic Keurig Classic K50 Single Serve Coffee Maker will keep Mom–and the rest of the clan–in coffee, tea, and hot chocolate all day long, and it even comes in colour now, too. The Keurig K200 Plus Single Serve/4-Cup Coffee Maker comes in a wide variety of colour options, so pick up one in your mom’s favourite colour and surprise her with it!

(Or, even better, pick up on that’ll match her new KitchenAid. Who says we can’t spoil mom excessively once a year?)
