TikTok may have started as a karaoke app for singing and dancing teens and tweens, but it’s expanded far beyond that since its launch in 2017. Today, the app encompasses everything from home cleaning tips to memes, food reviews, and the top TikTok tech gifts of the year. A viral TikTok video can make (or break) a business, and TikTok’s trending products come with raving—or scathing—reviews from influencers and small creators alike.
I’ll be the first to admit that I approached TikTok with a lot of skepticism when it came out. As a millennial who prefers written reviews and eschews ever opening their YouTube app, I am far from TikTok’s target audience. But once that For You Page (FYP) is fine-tuned… It’s hard to stay off of it.
TikTok is the first place I go when I’m searching for holiday gift ideas for tech lovers or looking for niche new restaurants to try.
