When I was younger I was an avid horseback rider. So each and every fall when the equestrian trend arrives I’m already ahead of the game with a horde of riding boots, jodhpurs—aka riding pants—and accessories I can incorporate into my wardrobe to stay on trend. But for those who were never exposed to the sport, the idea of incorporating equestrian inspired items can be rather daunting, not to mention expensive. Personally, whenever I’m faced with a trend that I want to play with, but don’t feel confident going ‘all in’ for I tend to opt for accessories that can be added to my existing wardrobe. With the equestrian trend, that can actually be quite simple. Think leather/suede gloves, riding boots, jewelry with classic riding elements, such as the bit, which is the most common detail found, and is the metal portion that is placed in the horse’s mouth for added control while riding, and of course saddle bags.

Saddle bags are traditionally attached to the saddle as a means for added storage but have made their way into modern fashion thanks to their unique shape and practical design. One of my favourites is this cross-body Vince Camuto Saddle Bag, which instantly brought me back to my fond memories of days spent at the barn riding horses. Similar to an authentic saddle bag, this Vince Camuto option is made of a high-quality cognac leather that feels luxuriously smooth to the touch. The addition of white stitching and gold details elevate the design while reinforcing the equestrian influence. I’ve found myself smitten with the amount of storage this bag features as well. With an envelope pocket at the front, and open designed pouch at the rear, I never have to fully open the purse to grab my phone or keys—talk about first world problems. I’ve also come to love the fact that like a true saddle, the Vince Camuto Saddle Bag is prone to wear and tear, and the distress that comes with continued use only intensifies its authentic feel—and as a former rider, authenticity is of utmost importance.

One thing that is certain: this saddle bag is versatile. Here, I’ve paired it with a simple white dress and added cognac details to amplify the equestrian feel, but I also love the idea of pairing it with something unexpected, like a sleek head-to-toe black ensemble. And while the warm weather is still upon us, I can’t wait to pair it with a flouncy, floral mini dress, which is one of my favourite ways to style a saddle bag.
