Spring might be for cleaning but summer is the perfect time for redecorating and renovating different rooms of the home, including the nursery. Sure, common rooms of the home that are often prime for renovating include kitchens and bathrooms. But don’t discount the nursery. Whether the nursery was decorated a while ago and your baby is now approaching toddler age, or you’re getting it prepped for baby number-two, there are plenty of ways you can give the room a quick and simply refresh.
You can, of course, go big and update major pieces of furniture or just make minor changes to freshen up the room and give it a new look.
Update nursery furniture for a new look
If you bought a convertible crib that is now moving to another room to be used as a daybed for an older child, you might be looking to get another crib for the nursery. If you’re switching up the paint or wallpaper as well, or the overall colour scheme, you can consider going with another colour crib, too, like white or grey if your first crib was brown. Even if you are keeping the same paint or wallpaper, a new colour crib will adjust the overall look. This will mean getting new furniture to match, like a dresser, change table, or even glider.
If you’re outfitting a new nursery or doing a complete overhaul, it would make sense to look into nursery bundles that include a crib and other pieces of furniture. Some even come with other pieces, like a stroller and/or car seat, perfect to kill two birds with one stone as you prep for the arrival of a new little one. But if you are just looking for a refresh, consider updating just one or two pieces. Something as simple as moving a glider down to the living room or basement and getting a different styled one for a nursery could make a world of difference in the room.
Small décor changes
Sometimes, the smallest décor change can completely change the look of a room. When we painted our dining room walls, the entire look of the room transformed. Just adding a small area rug to our living room gave the room a different feel.
In a nursery, changing the crib bedding can create a whole new theme. Maybe your toddler is now using the crib as a daybed and a new bedding set can make it seem like a whole new “big boy” or “big girl” bed. Remember, revamping the look might not just be for your own aesthetic preference but it could be to accommodate the child’s newfound love of farm animals or unicorns.
If you don’t want to redo the paint job, you can still liven up the nursery with some wall decals that feature imagery that fits with a new theme or that your baby/toddler will love. From Super Mario themes to Star Wars for older kids or even just a large unicorn sticker, there’s something for every type of child. If you want to try out a temporary new look that doesn’t require too much effort, consider peel & stick wallpaper.
Even something as small as switching to a more stylish diaper pail can give the room a whole new look.
Keep an eye on the nursery
Your revamp might not just be about the look of the nursery but also about how you manage keeping an eye on your baby while they’re sleeping in there. It might be worth upgrading from an audio-only baby monitor to a video monitor, with a camera mounted on the wall above the crib and monitor in your room. Of all of the gadgets and gizmos that I had when my son was a baby, our video baby monitor was one of the most important, if not the most important.
While a baby monitor isn’t going to change the look of the room itself, it will allow you to keep a better eye on your child during naps and overnight. And many of them can also do things like display the temperature in the room and alert you if it’s too hot or too cold at any given time.
Storage and organization
There’s no better way to revamp any room of the home than to tidy up. And storage and organization gear is essential for achieving a clean and tidy room. Consider closet organizer systems to keep clothing, linens, books, and other essentials out of view and neatly organized.
You could also add a colourful bookshelf to the room to not only organize books (and teach your toddler how to clean up after themselves by putting away their books) but to change up the look. A hanging wall organizer is also a nice way to organize things like diapers, wipes, and other essentials while opening up more floor space for other things, like a playmat.
My son is past the nursery age but we still use storage bins with lids in his room for storing stuffed animals he isn’t sleeping with each night. They have hard tops so they also function as seats when he has friends or family over. I also upgraded his laundry hamper to one that was not only bigger (kids go through a lot of clothing and babies even more!) but also something more stylish.
Add new elements
Whether it’s a glider chair or rocker that you didn’t have there before, a new piece of furniture like a larger dresser for your toddler’s growing selection of clothes, there are ways to enhance and change the look of the room by adding something new. Sometimes it isn’t just about updating but also getting furniture that suits and grows with your child. The change table, for example, might be replaced by a full-sized dresser. You might want to add a small play area in the corner where your child can safely explore, even using something like a foldable playpen you can set up and take down with ease.
The sky’s the limit!
There’s no limit to what you can do with the baby’s nursery, and this summer is the perfect time to think up a new look. Maybe you’re preparing for the child to enter preschool at the end of the year, or simply want a change that will make both you and then excited to have a room of their own.
