Dyson OmniGlide vacuum front angle

Dyson offers a wide selection of cordless stick vacuums, but if you’re looking for something ultra-compact, the Dyson Omni-Glide cordless stick vacuum might just fit the bill. Its claim to fame, so to speak, is the manoeuvrability, able to slide and glide in every direction and navigate small spaces, even lying flat to get right to the pesky back corner under your couch where dust bunnies like to hide. But does it work as well as promises? I tried one out in my home to find out.

What to know about the Dyson Omni-Glide cordless stick vacuum

First, what are the key things you need to know about the Dyson Omni-Glide cordless stick vacuum? It features two Fluffy rollers that are designed to spin and pick up large debris and fine dust as you move the machine to clean the floors. It can glide on the handle in every direction imaginable thanks to the articulating neck and four stabilizing castors, including forwards, backyards, and even sideways so you don’t miss a spot.

The vacuum is powered by the Hyderdynium motor that spins at up to 105,000rpm without losing its suction, so you get a consistent clean. The five-layer filtration system captures 99.97% of microscopic particles as small as 0.3 microns. Unlike other cordless stick vacuums, including other models from Dyson, this vacuum has an on/off power button so you just press once then go without the need to hold down a trigger. This makes it easy to move the machine from one hand to the other as well as you navigate a room.

How well does the Dyson Omni-Glide cordless stick vacuum actually work?

I’m already a fan of Dyson vacuums, having owned and used one for many years. I also recently reviewed the Dyson V15 Detect Complete, and loved its features and benefits. The Omni-Glide is smaller and doesn’t come with nearly as many attachments. It’s a much simpler and more affordable option that is ideal for those who live in an apartment or condo or who want something for daily maintenance cleans of one floor of the home, room, or quick clean-ups.

The vacuum comes with a wall mount charger, but since this was only a review sample, I did not mount it. However, I did click the dock into the vacuum and plug it in to recharge, and it works seamlessly. It’s rated for about 20 minutes of runtime per charge, which is ideal for cleaning small homes, single rooms, or quick clean-ups as needed.

It comes with two attachments: the omni-directional soft roller cleaner head and a combi-crevice tool. Like other Dyson cordless stick vacuums, you can use it as a handheld as well by simply connecting the cleaning tool directly to the main chamber.

The first most important thing to note is that this vacuum is designed to clean hard floors, which was a drag since I have an area rug in the living room as well as a carpet runner down the hallway. I also like to use my cordless to vacuum the front and back door mats.

The first thing I noticed when pulling this vacuum out to use was that the stick length is fairly short. I’m about 5’5” but found that I had to lean over a bit more than I’d like while vacuuming with it. If you’re taller than me, this might not be the vacuum for you.

I do love that you can simply press the button to get going then glide away without having to hold down a trigger.

The Omni-Glide indeed glides along very well, but that also makes it feel a bit looser than other vacuums, as though you’re walking with a pair of roller skates guiding you along. But it does the job and does it well, sufficiently picking up dirt and debris from kitchen tiles, hardwood floor, and other hard surfaces. Keep in mind that while the brushes aren’t designed to glide over carpeting, depending on the thickness, it can still do a decent job. I was able to clean my living room area rug, carpet runner, and front door mats though you can only move forwards and backwards; you won’t have the same freedom to glide side to side as you would on hard flooring and tiles.

Once ready to clean, it’s easy to empty the bin by pressing the hygienic ejection mechanism, which sends dust into the garbage with one push. The bin, filter, soft roller cleaner head, and other similar tools that don’t contain any electronics can also be easily hand washed in cold water.

Bottom line

The biggest appeal with the Dyson Omni-Glide cordless stick vacuum is the manoeuvrability, which is second-to-none. But this vacuum is best suited to those who have hard flooring or tiles throughout the entire home. It’s also best for smaller homes since the brush head is smaller and it isn’t the best option for very tall individuals.

While other Dyson vacuum heads might not be able to get into little crooks and crevices like this one can, they also come with plenty of other attachments for cleaning a wide variety of other areas and in different ways. And the higher runtime on other Dyson models make them more appealing.

With that said, other Dyson vacuums also come in at a much higher price. If you have the extra dough to spend, given the additional tools, suction power, and battery life you get with other models, I’d recommend waiting and saving up to get a more feature-rich Dyson model. However, if you’re on a tight budget but have your heart set on a Dyson, you can’t go wrong with the Omni-Glide provided you are cleaning only hard flooring. It works just as wonderfully as other Dyson models on those surfaces, it’s compact and lightweight so it won’t take up much space, and it glides so beautifully as you clean. For a single person or couple living in a condo or apartment, it’s an option worth considering as an entry into the world of Dyson.

  1. What fun I have imagining Jane Fonda vacuuming my home using the Dyson Omni Glide Cordless Stick Vacuum once a week.
