Xbox Games Showcase

On Sunday, June 9, Microsoft presented its 2024 edition of the Xbox Game Showcase. Most of the games are developed by the main studios owned by Xbox, such as State of Decay 3, Fable, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, and the World of Warcraft: The War Within expansion. New content was also announced for Fallout 76, Sea of Thieves, Diablo IV, and Starfield.

Several other games presented are developed by third-party studios. I was personally surprised and happy to see Max Caufield return in Life is Strange: Double Exposure. It is definitely on my watchlist! Here are five games that caught my attention.

Doom: The Dark Ages

id Software / Bethesda Game Studios

Presented at the very beginning of the Xbox Games Showcase, the Slayer is back in action in Doom: The Dark Ages. Players will once again embody the steadfast champion to face the darkness in this first-person shooter and action game, as epic as ever. Designed with the latest IdTech engine, we will witness the origins of the Slayer’s rage. As a prequel to DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal, the story will uncover how the ultimate hope of a kingdom became Hell’s worst nightmare.

While the hero’s trusty Super Shotgun is back, Doom: The Dark Ages will introduce new weapons such as the gun and the roaring Shield Saw. And let’s not forget Atlan, a colossal mech capable of toppling Hell’s behemoths with mighty metallic punches. There’s no denying, Doom: The Dark Ages promises to be as brutal as we want it to be.

Doom: The Dark Ages is expected to release in 2025.

Age of Mythology: Retold

World’s Edge / Xbox Game Studios

Age of Mythology is an iconic series for Microsoft. We will witness its great comeback with the announcement of the strategy game Age of Mythology: Retold in the fall. The title aims to be a remake of the original game, combining modernized design, graphics, and gameplay with redesigned portraits of deities. The first gameplay images revealed here promise thrilling action and divine powers.

Age of Mythology: Retold will be released on September 4, 2024.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Bioware / Electronic Arts

The Veilguard group consists of a team of seven companions, each with a rich history to discover. Allowing the player to shape their journey as they wish, they will have the freedom to develop Rook, the new hero of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. In the storyline, Thedas calls upon us to confront two ancient corrupted gods who have escaped from centuries of darkness and have set out to destroy the world. Steeped in conflicts and secret magics, the universe thrusts us into the discovery of wild lands, treacherous labyrinths, and dazzling cities.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is scheduled for release in fall 2024.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle

MachineGames / Bethesda Game Studios

We finally got to see in-game footage for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Much awaited since its announcement, the video showcased Indy in full action. And I liked what I saw. The game allows the player to embody the famous archaeologist as he embarks on an extraordinary quest, facing sinister forces to uncover the truth behind one of the greatest mysteries in history. This new adventure will take him from the sanctified halls of the Vatican to the sunken temples of Sukhothai, going through the pyramids of Egypt and the snowy peaks of the Himalayas.

We also got a glimpse of who will accompany our explorer. In the video presented at the Xbox Games Showcase, Gina and Indy retrieve an artifact in the heart of the Himalayas in Nepal. Of course, they are quickly interrupted by Gantz, who attempts to capture them. The game’s action is reminiscent of what we see in the film series, and that’s exactly what the developers want us to experience.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is expected to release later this year.

Gears of War: E-Day

The Coalition / Xbox Game Studios

E-Day is Emergence Day. It is the day of the arrival of the Locust Hordes, those creatures emerging from the depths that invaded Earth to destroy everything. The scenario takes place fourteen years before the events of the first game. In Gears of War: E-Day, we find Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago, which will delight the first players, including me!

No release date has yet been announced for Gears of War: E-Day.

A diverse Xbox Games Showcase

What I love about Xbox is the wide variety of games available. We can choose from a range of styles and player categories, from games suitable for a mature audience to those meant for a younger audience. Most of them will be available on the launch day on Xbox Game Pass.

The presentation started with a first look at the campaign for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. A second session focusing entirely on the game will be presented after the Xbox Games Showcase. To learn more about it, keep an eye on the blog for our full article coming soon.
