Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint

Today Ubisoft announced the next entry in its acclaimed military tactical shooter franchise. Promising huge action and new innovations for the genre, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint is the direct sequel to 2017’s Ghost Recon Wildlands, and will be available on October 4th, 2019.

Solo or multiplayer action

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint will be a 3rd person tactical shooter that can be played solo or in (up to) 4-player co-op. It will also include a PVP mode as well, available right from launch. In a future update, Breakpoint will even include the first ever raid mission in a Ghost Recon game.

Players will be able to choose between multiple classes—including four at launch, with more new classes promised down the road. Players can switch classes (and heal as well) from just about anywhere using “bivouac” shelters. The bivouac system takes inspiration from real-life tactical military procedure and strategy.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint promises a robust story campaign along with multiple game modes and content updates and expansions. Players will maintain the same character across all aspects of the game, including styles, loadouts, and progression.

Drone island

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint will take place on “Auroa”, a remote island archipelago in the South Pacific. Auroa just happens to house the private compound of Jack Skell—a tech mogul specializing in artificial and autonomous drones. But when a political figure is assassinated by a rogue drone and Skell disappears off the grid, it’s up to the Ghosts to investigate.

Normally the elite military tactical “Ghosts” have the upper hand. However, Breakout focuses on what happens when things go wrong—when the mission goal shifts from success to survival and the hunters become the hunted.

An equally skilled team of rogue agents known as the “Wolves” have taken over Auroa, and re-programmed Skell’s drone army for their own purposes. Now instead of executing a well-crafted plan, the Ghosts must instead adapt and improvise with every skill and survival tactic at their disposal.

Alpha gameplay

The alpha footage shown so far presents Auroa as a lush and dynamic environment. I have to say a lot of the lighting and weather animation is particularly impressive, with a distinct focus on sunlight misting through the trees and different aspects of glare in relation to the sun’s proximity.

Ubisoft promises other dynamic gameplay mechanics such as varying degrees of injury, which can significantly affect performance. Weather and environmental conditions will also greatly influence the way in which you are capable of moving and engaging in combat.

Enemies will always be on alert, and the developer claims they will have a greater propensity than ever to intelligently “work as a team” to flush you out once they catch wind of your presence.
