Elden Ring, one of the biggest games of the year, is coming out this month and Best Buy Blog has all the details. The game features an original story by Hidetaka Miyazaki, the creator of Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Sekiro. What dials up the excitement even further is famed writer George R. R. Martin has provided material for the game’s setting. Between developer FromSoftware’s legendary gameplay acumen and Martin’s masterful storytelling, gamers are in for something special. Let’s dig into all the details we have so far around the game as we inch closer to Elden Ring’s launch.

A dark medieval fantasy
Major plot points are still shrouded in secrecy but we do know Elden Ring takes place in a medieval fantasy setting. Your character is known as “The Tarnished” and is being hunted for unknown reasons. The harsh world is filled with powerful weapons, magic, and challenging enemies.
The story unfolds in the realm of the “Lands Between” after the destruction of the Elden Ring. The destruction of the ring leads to the scattering of its shards, now named the Great Runes. The land is ruled by Queen Marika the Eternal who’s offspring, the demigods, have claimed the shards and triggered a war: The Shattering. It is up to you scour the realm find all the Great Runes, restore the Elden Ring and become an Elden Lord.
Elden Ring character classes
The experience will also let players pick their own character classes to better suit their play style. The five classes you can choose from include: Champion, Bloody Wolf, Enchanted Knight, Prophet, and Warrior. FromSoft hasn’t detailed what each class will bring to the table, but based on past RPGs and Souls games we can make some assumptions. For example, Enchanted Knight sounds like a melee/magic hybrid build. Warrior sounds like a tank build that specializes in physical attacks over magic.
Elden Ring’s gameplay and exploration
The game is a third-person action RPG focused on hack-n-slash combat and exploration. Another key difference between Elden Ring and Miyazaki’s other games is the fact that it is an open world experience. Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls, and Bloodborne for example, follow a linear path with shortcuts and hidden areas. In Elden Ring the game starts with a focused path but then opens up. There are six main areas to explore either on foot, via horseback or fast travel. FromSoft has promised locales in the game will be “grandeur on a scale never seen” in one of their games. Demigods control each of the areas who act as “bosses,” defeating each one will restore an element of the Elden Ring.
Online co-op in Elden Ring
If you are familiar with FromSoft’s other games, Elden Ring will handle online play in the same manner. You can be summoned into another players world to assist them in battle or scout locations. When you are in another player’s world you will be able to interact with the environment in limited ways. You won’t be able to advance the storyline, that can only be done by the host. With the difficult challenges that lie ahead in FromSoft’s games, let’s hope the Elden Ring community bands together to help one another.
