Dedicated sports fans spend a fair amount of time glued to their TVs, so Christmas is an ideal time to help make that experience even more enjoyable. If you are having a hard time coming up with some great gifts for the sports junkie in your house, here are some suggestions for you.

Harmony Ultimate Home.jpegHarmony Home Universal Remotes

This is the ideal gift, since most sports addicts love cool technology, especially ones that they can show-off to all their friends, and will simplify their viewing and channel surfing capabilities. I love the latest Harmony remotes, the Harmony Home Control and the Harmony Ultimate Home, because they not only fully control your entertainment system, but also lots of other devices in your home. Things like lighting, heat (thermostats), door locks, etc. So the ultimate sports fan can control their TV and entertainment system, and unlock the door, turn down the lights, and turn up the heat without getting up from the big game. For more details on how sweet these new controllers are, look at my recent post. In my opinion their Home Control is the best value.

Bose CineMate 15.jpeg

Bose CineMate 15 Home Theatre Speaker System

The best way to enhance the entertainment value of sports, besides getting a bigger TV, is adding a strong sound system. TVs are so thin these days their speakers just don’t cut it. Bose CineMate 15 is the easiest ways to add the booming sound that Bose delivers to make the impact of every play feel a lot more immersive. I like the CineMate 15 because the system doesn’t take up much space, is easy to set up, and the sound is excellent. It comes with its’ own universal remote, if you don’t go for my first suggestion above – but it won’t be able to control non-entertainment devices like the Harmony can.

Haier 3.3 CuFt Bar Fridge.jpg

Haier 3.3 Cubic Foot Bar Fridge

For any hard core sports fan, having a few beverages while watching the game is pretty much a core activity, and having the convenience of having beverages nearby is a luxury that once you have it, wonder how you did without it. It may sound lazy, but it is a very nice convenience with the advantage of saving room in your main fridge from the extra game clutter. I like the Haier HNDE03VS because it is stainless steel that looks great, is dual-door with a totally separate freezer compartment, and has plenty of space inside.

Beer Machine.jpg

The Beer Machine

Speaking of beverages, have you seen the price of beer? Well, this 10 Litre brewing machine is a foolproof way to make over 20 different kinds of beer. It comes with a tap so you get a draft beer, no bottles required. The Beer Machine also allows you to control the carbonation to suit your taste. I like it a little fizzier, so it is a nice touch to be able add extra fizz.

When nursing a beer or two during the game you don’t want to risk the beer getting warmer quicker than desired. The Brilliant Pilsner Glasses help solve that problem, plus they look awesome with a design that makes it look like there is a beer bottle inside the glass. The two layers of glass create a thermal layer that keeps any cold beverage cold longer, and they prevent condensation so you can avoid those nasty rings on your favorite coffee table.

NHL Mirror

One of the best memorabilia gifts to make the man-cave look like that of a sports fan are NHL Mirrors from Holland Bar Stool. These mirrors have a hockey rink that features your favorite team. This mirror is available for all the Canadian NHL Teams and a few of the US NHL Teams like the Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, and the Boston Bruins.

LG Smart IPS LB6300.jpg

LG Smart IPS HDTV (42LB6300)

One of the best ways to the Sports-fan’s heart is a new flat screen TV. The LG IPS LB6300 series of TVs is a very good choice because the IPS panel is extremely sharp, is a Smart TV, and won’t get any motion blur in a fast hockey game. The IPS panel has an exceptional viewing angle so when everyone comes over for the big game, everyone will see a crystal clear picture no matter where they are in the room. The Smart TV uses LG’s WebOS platform, which lets you see the game while you surf the net to get the latest stats on players, or tweet the plays to your friends. The LG LB6300 series comes in 42”, 47”, 50” and 55” so you can find the best size for the man-cave.

Slingbox M1.jpegSlingbox M1

Last but not least on my list is the Slingbox M1 media streamer. Sports junkies love this device because they will never to miss a game, even when they aren’t home. It allows you to take your cable or satellite box at home and play it on your tablet or Smartphone anywhere in the world. Not being at home doesn’t mean you have to miss the big game. As long as you can have an Internet connection you can watch the game on your mobile device, even if you have it recorded on your PVR.

Tom Brauser
I love to try new technologies and I have a practical approach to techie stuff - it has to be easy to use and make my life better. I have my house fully wired, with a surround sound system in my family room for music and TV viewing, but also drive music throughout the house as well as outdoors. I Internet stream content on all my devices at home, which provides a huge variety of entertainment to enjoy.
