Google announced several new products today, including new Pixel phones and the new Nest Audio (you can learn about those in Ted’s detailed announcement article here on the Best Buy Blog). But, the one that could be considered their new flagship is the all new Chromecast with Google TV.

All new Chromecast with Google TV

Google’s new and redesigned 4K Chromecast with Google TV is a streaming device and so much more. Now in a softer, more nature-inspired design the TV streaming dongle is available in pink, blue and white, or Snow, Sunrise and Sky. It also now comes with a small, dedicated remote control in matching colour families, and of course you can still use your smartphone as a remote too.

Tech Specs: Chromecast with Google TV

Chromecast with Google TV plugs into your TV’s HDMI port and will hide easily behind your screen due to its teeny size. The dongle streams video in up to 4K HDR at up to 60 frames per second and with Dolby Vision, you’ll get extraordinary colour, contrast, brightness and detail on your TV. Chromecast also support HDMI pass-through of Dolby audio content.

Google shared info on the device at a media event today, saying Chromecast with Google TV has your favourite Chromecast features and now comes with the all-new Google TV entertainment experience, bringing together movies, shows and more from across your apps and subscriptions. You can also access live TV.

One of the highlights of the device is that it can display all available content by genre or actor in your watchlist, meaning you no longer need to navigate between TV steaming apps to surf for shows or movies. They find you!

“To build this, we studied the different ways people discover media—from searching for a specific title to browsing by genre—and created an experience that helps you find what to watch,” according to Google Canada’s blog. “We also made improvements to Google’s Knowledge Graph, which is part of how we better understand and organize your media into topics and genres, from movies about space travel to reality shows about cooking. You’ll also see titles that are trending on Google Search, so you can always find something timely and relevant.”

Naturally Google Assistant is available to help you search for TV and movies, control your TV, as well as to perform smart household commands.

Google Ambient Mode on Chromecast

Playing off the popular screensaver option many TVs now come with, Google is offering an ‘ambient mode’ on Chromecast with Google TV. When you aren’t watching TV, Google ambient mode lets you connect to Google Photos so you can play images and personal photos on your home’s biggest screen.

Check Google Nest cameras

Another feature of the device will allow you to view your indoor and outdoor home security cameras on the Chromecast with Google TV.

The all new Chromecast with Google TV is available now for preorder and it ships October 15, 2020.

  1. I love how easy it is to use….would be great for my elderly parents to turn their old tv into a smart tv! I would love to stream YouTube onto my large screen tv!

  2. Finally a chromecast type device that doesn’t need a phone. I get what they were trying to do with the old chromecast, I have one, but it was just awkward. I was about to replace our chromecast with a new Amazon Firestick but I think I’ll hang on now and get a Google TV instead when they are in stores.
