sleep technology

A number of different factors can affect the quality of one’s sleep. If you’re like most people, you probably sleep well enough most nights, but overall could use a more consistently restful slumber. To help improve the overall quality and consistency of your sleep, the focus of today’s blog is Smart Home Sleep Technology and other useful products that combine to contribute to a great night’s sleep. This list includes items that can help to enhance your sleep’s restfulness both directly (aiding in the sleep itself) and indirectly (by giving you peace of mind while you snooze).

Smart home sleep technology

Getting a good night’s sleep comes easier to some than others. If you’re one of the folks that could use a little bit of extra help getting your zees in, one piece of smart home technology that might help you out is the Dodow Metronome Sleep Aid Device. What this device is is a light casting system that shines a rhythmic light pattern on your bedroom ceiling that helps you to relax, regulate your breathing pattern, and ultimately fall asleep in 8-20 minutes, after which time it automatically shuts itself off. I actually reviewed this device when it first came out, so I’ll let that review fill you in on the rest of the details.

sleep technologyAnother smart product that could help you to sleep better is the Withings Sleep Tracking Pad with Sensor, Sleep Score, & IFTTT Integration. This Alexa compatible device slips under your mattress and then tracks various sleep quality metrics, such as your heart rate, sleep cycles, breathing, and snoring. Using this feedback, the pad can then affect control over other smart home products to achieve ideal sleeping conditions in your bedroom. For instance, it can change the temperature or the amount of light in the room to help improve your quality of sleep. In fact, this product has a whole host of really useful features that could help to improve your sleep. My favourite is the way it combines all of your collected sleeping data to give you a daily sleep score, thus informing you of the restful quality of your sleep and giving you a goal to try and beat the next night.

One of the more interesting sleep tech products I’ve become aware of recently is the Somnox Sleep Robot 1.0 with Breathing Regulation. This huggable bean-shaped robot somewhat reminds me of a teddy bear, but it’s actually a whole lot more than that. What it does is simulate the rhythmic inhalation and exhalation of your breathing (via its breathing sensors) to help you relax and make you fall asleep more quickly (as well as to sleep longer once you do). It’s also Bluetooth enabled and works with a special app (both iOS and Android smart phone compatible), so you can customize and control its features, like setting timers and managing your breathing rhythms. I haven’t had occasion to try one of these out myself yet, but it sure does sound promising. And then there’s the Hupnos Anti-Snoring Sleep Mask, which promises to monitor your snoring and gently nudge you into a better sleeping position through tiny vibrations that encourage you to reposition yourself through the night. It also offers EPAP (Expiratory Positive Airway Pressure) to help adjust your breathing by better opening your airways, and a special app tracks your sleep performance so you can try to improve over time and get a higher quality of sleep. I don’t know exactly how well this EPAP thing might work, but I would really like to give it a try myself as I often have breathing difficulty at night.

Before we move on to smart home products that will help you to sleep with peace of mind, the final purely sleep tech product I want to mention is the iHome Zenergy Meditative Therapy Candle. This candle has 4 Light Therapy programs (including Favourite Colour and Flame-Effect) and 8 soothing sounds to help you fall asleep—everything from Thunder Storm to Calming Ocean, and even White Noise. One of the sound options, Breathing Coach, has an optional voice guidance feature to help get your breathing into a soothing rhythm that will help you fall asleep. All of these great features, and it looks really nice too!

Sleeping with peace of mind

sleep technologyIf peace of mind through the night is key to your ability to get a good night’s sleep, you’ll also want to pick up a specialized toxin detector such as the Nest Protect Wi-Fi Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm.

Detectors such as this one can absolutely save your life and the lives of everyone under your roof. When it comes to toxins like carbon monoxide, there’s really no fooling around. You can neither smell this deadly gas, nor otherwise detect it—and your lungs will just feel like they’re breathing normal, refreshing air. Many times, people begin to get light headed and lose their ability to think properly when exposed to carbon monoxide, and by the time it’s had its effect, it’s too late to realize that you’re in trouble.

This is why a carbon monoxide detector is so important, to say nothing of the value of a quality smoke detector in case of a house fire. Moreover, Nest Protect is truly the ideal system. The great thing about it is that it’s smart enough to know the degree of the problem that’s occurring.

In other words, if it only detects a small amount of smoke or carbon monoxide, it’ll let you know what’s going on without sending everyone in the house into a blind panic.

However, if the circumstances are of a more dire or emergency nature, Nest Protect will let you know that as well, with full red light flashing and audible alarm.

Other features of Nest Protect include easy and convenient connectivity with your smart phone, connected safety inspections, constant monitoring of its battery level, and easy installation—just to name a few.

Managing circadian rhythms

Some sleep technology can also help you to manage your circadian rhythms. For the purposes of this blog, a circadian rhythm will be very simply defined as the body’s internal clock for managing the recurring 24 hour cycle wherein people require a certain amount of sleep in order to function properly—typically 8 hours (on average).

It is highly beneficial for your waking and sleeping hours to correspond on a daily basis (i.e., adherence to a proper sleeping schedule), but this isn’t always possible or easy to accomplish (for instance, people in on-call professions or those who suffer from insomnia can’t always sleep the exact same hours every night).

To help you get your solid 8 hours of sack time every night, Smart Lights are absolutely invaluable. This is because you can easily set the colour (over 16 million of them) and brightness to help you flow easily between night and day and back. You can even program them to gradually brighten or dim as needed to help you manage your internal clock. Your entire body will thank you for using smart lighting schedules to help manage your sleep!

Other smart home products can also help. For example, white noise machines (like the LectroFan Noise & Fan Machine, shown above—and here I thought I had already mentioned the final purely sleep tech device earlier) and devices that help you to control and slow your breathing (like the Dodow Metronome Sleep Aid Device, also discussed above) can help you to fall asleep faster and sleep more soundly through the night, thereby helping to keep your circadian rhythms in a proper and healthy cycle.

Through the night security

Finally, what better way to enjoy a sound night’s sleep than to rest in the knowledge that your home is protected under the constant surveillance of a smart home security camera?

While not precisely sleep technology in and of itself, consider the 4 piece NETGEAR Arlo Wireless Indoor/Outdoor Security System, for instance. Boasting 4 x 720p cameras and a ton of great features, the Arlo Security System can protect your family both indoors and out all through the night.

Among its best qualities are the facts that each camera is 100% wire free (offering wide angle—130 degree, views of everything in their field of vision) and an all-weather design that assures you of great outdoor performance at any time of the year. They even provide convenient motion alerts if movement is detected by their all-seeing eye. And, better still, their night vision capabilities makes seeing in the dark an absolute breeze for these cameras, so if there’s anyone foolish enough to trespass on your property (or, heaven forbid, in your home), you’ll easily catch them in the act.

Clearly there’s more to getting a good night’s sleep than simply laying your head down. With today’s smart home sleep technology (and related) products, peace of mind and a good night’s sleep—every single night, is finally close at hand.
