To kick off the holiday shopping season, Amazon unveiled a slew of new and updated devices. From Astro, Amazon’s new robot to the Rise, a sunrise alarm clock, to an assortment of smart home tech, Amazon showcased a portfolio of new products.  Here’s a look at new products coming to Canada.

Kindle Scribe

Kindle Scribe

Note-taking with a pen is making a comeback. The Kindle Scribe combines reading notetaking with the world’s first 10.2-inch, 300 pixels per inch (ppi) display. The included pen replicates the feel and flow of a pen on paper. Best of all, it never needs to be charged. It’s perfect for people who want to take notes while they read. Users can also use it to add notes to documents, journaling, or take notes using a variety of templates.

The Kindle Scribe has additional features and integrations. The Send-to-Kindle feature imports personal documents from a computer or phone and writes directly on PDF documents. Users can import and create sticky notes in Microsoft Word documents and web articles. Early in 2023, documents can be sent directly from Microsoft Word to Kindle Scribe.

FireTV QLED Series - widgets

Fire TV Omni QLED Series

Amazon Fire TV has been around for awhile and they announced their new Fire TV Omni QLED Series. It features the new FireTV Ambient Experience that includes a free image gallery of artwork to display when the TV is idle. The Omni QLED Series uses built-in presence sensors to detect when a person enters the room. It will then switch to an Ambient Experience able to show the type of content you prefer, like curated art pieces,  and family photos.

Powered by Alexa, the Omni QLED Series uses new widgets optimized for TV. This can range from a family calendar, sticky notes, smart home device control, news headlines etc. Instead of flipping channels, Alexa can also be used for content discovery. Use Alexa to find new shows based on titles, genres, and more.

Fire TV Cube

Fire Cube TV

The third generation of the Fire TV Cube is 20% more powerful than the previous generation. It features a new octa-core 2.0 GHz that increases app launch speeds. It can also be controlled entirely hands-free with Alexa with support for cinematic 4K Ultra HD, Dolby Vision, HDR, and immersive Dolby Atmos audio.

The Fire Cube TV includes an industry first. This will change how we interact with cable boxes. The HDMI input brings devices together by directly connecting compatible cable boxes. Customers can say “Alexa, tune to ESPN on cable” instead of manually changing inputs. The Fire TV Cube also features an additional USB port for connections to webcams. With Alexa Communications, TVs can be used for video calls with friends and family. Video calls from the living room might soon become the way we remotely connect with families.

Alexa Voice Remote Pro

Alexa Voice Remote Pro

Alexa Voice Remote Pro is perfect for people who always lose the remote control. It has a Remote Finder feature to find misplaced remotes. Simply say, “Alexa, find my remote” to trigger an audible ring from the controller’s built-in speaker. Users can also use the Remote Finder button in the Fire TV app to find their controller.

The Alexa Voice Remote Pro features two customizable buttons. Users can program one-touch shortcuts to favourite apps, channels, and Alexa commands. For example, one button can be programmed to start an Alexa Routine for movie night

The Alexa Voice Remote Pro is compatible with most FireTV streaming media players, Amazon Fire TV smart TVs, and Smart TVs with Fire TV built-in.

Echo Dot Kids

Echo Dot Kids

Now available in Canada, Echo Dot Kids comes in Owl and Dragon designs and kid-focused content service. It comes with a one-year subscription to Amazon Kids+. This provides kids with age-appropriate content such as ad-free books, games, and songs. Parents can use parental controls to set daily time limits, filter explicit songs, and review activity in the Amazon Parent Dashboard.

Echo Dot Kids will soon feature new Alexa voices to bring Owl and Dragon to life. Kids can hear greetings, jokes, facts, and songs from the perspective of an Owl or Dragon. Parents will also like the 2-year worry-free guarantee. If the kids break it, Amazon will replace it for free.

Echo Dot and Echo Dot with Clock

New Echo Dot and Echo Dot with Clock

The new Echo Dot and Echo Dot clock (5th gen) have double the bass of the previous generation. It has a redesigned audio architect and features a custom full-range driver within the same spherical design. Both models have new sensors that enable more contextual Alexa experiences. For example, users can ask Alexa to turn on a smart fan when the temperature gets warm inside.

The new generation of Echo Dot has an accelerometer to enable new tap gesture controls. Simply tap the top to pause and resume music, end calls, or dismiss a timer. The Echo Dot with Clock includes upgraded high-density dot technology. In addition to the time, you can now view the name of song titles, the weather, calendar event times, and more.

Eero integration with Echo Dot

The latest generation of Echo Dot and Echo Dot with Clock incorporates eero WiFi mesh technology. Essentially, this makes them the first Amazon Echo devices that serve as mesh WiFi extenders. These new Echo devices can add up to 1,000 square feet of coverage to an existing Eero network. The new Echo devices support speeds up to 100 Mbps for 4K streaming and HD video calls. 4th generation Echo devices will also receive eero Built-in through an over-the-air update on Oct 20.
