The Fujifilm X-E4

Fujifilm has just announced the release of two new cameras, the X-E4 mirrorless camera and the GFX100S large format mirrorless camera, the fourth large format mirrorless camera in Fujifilm’s GFX System.

The Fujifilm X-E4 mirrorless camera

The X-E4 is billed as a lightweight, compact camera that ‘features the same 26.1-megapixel, X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor, 0.02 sec autofocus, and fantastic color science that can be found in all the professional X Series cameras’, according to the press release. Fujifilm has made some really strong upgrades to it’s flagship mirrorless camera, which is now the X-T4, and it sounds like some of those features have trickled down to the more affordable X-E4.

The X-E4 is certainly the smallest and lightest of the X Series cameras, weighing in at just 364g, but with that fantastic X-trans sensor this camera is undoubtedly capable of making award-winning images. As we have come to expect from X Series cameras, the X-E4 retains that classic film camera look that has served Fujifilm so well. As you can see from the image below, the back of the camera is a study in minimal design.

The X-E4 comes with a touch-enabled LCD screen, which allows you to choose your focus point and tap-to-shoot, along with a few other functions. It’s not clear at this point whether you can operate the menus via the LCD screen.

The X-E4 shoots 4K video

As well as powerful still photography features, the X-E4 has good video shooting capabilities too, including 4K video at 30fps. It can also shoot Full HD at 120fps and 240fps, both of which will yield beautiful slo-mos. They are limited to 6 minutes and 3 minutes respectively however, which for in most situations should be adequate. After all a 3 minute clip at 240fps slowed down to 24fps is 10 minutes! Trust me, no audience wants to watch a 10 minute slo-mo scene.

Two new X mount lenses

Along with the X-E4 Fujifilm has released two new X mount lenses in the form of the Fujinon XF 70-300mm F4-5.6 R LM OIS WR which comes with weather sealing and stabilization, and the Fujinon XF 27mm F2.8 R WR, a prime lens which is also weather sealed. A lack of lens options has been one of the shortcomings of the mirrorless market so it’s great to see Fujifilm adding more lenses to their lineup. You’ll notice the letter ‘R’ associated with each lens and this refers to the aperture ring which allows you change the aperture right there on the lens. I’m a big fan of this feature and I know a lot of photography purists are too.

The Fujifilm GFX100S

Aside from an impressive lineup of mirrorless APS-C cameras, Fujifilm also makes large format cameras in the GFX series. The GFX100S is the latest version and it carries a 102MP sensor which is 1.7 times larger than a full-frame sensor. The GFX100S promises exceptional image quality with very high resolution, a wide color gamut and lots of dynamic range. It also comes with 6 stops of in-body image stabilization, which can be used in the Pixel Shift Multi-Shot function to create very large files, up to 400MP, by combining 16 RAW files into a single image. Although the price tag is relatively reasonable, this is a camera that will most likely find it’s best outlet in the hands of professional shooters.

  1. Regardless of what manufacturer you shoot with I think every photographer has got to love Fujifilms retro design style.
