Vitamix-blender.jpgI’ve tried out my fair share of appliances over the past few years, and I’m the go-to person out of my friends and family when someone is in the market for a new appliance of some kind.

Out of all of the appliances I get asked about, blenders are right at the top of the list. That might be because juicing, smoothies, and blending fruits and vegetables are so popular, and when someone is into those types of drinks, the blender they’re looking for is always a high performance blender like Vitamix.

What’s the difference between a Vitamix blender and a standard blender? If I had to sum it up in a few words, I’d say speed and power. With a Vitamix you get a 2-peak horsepower motor that spins those blades at 240 miles per hours. Anything you put in the container is going to be pulverized at those speeds, so if your blender has ever struggled to blend almonds into your smoothies, you’re going to be blown away by the Vitamix.

vitamix.jpgSmoothies are one of the areas where the Vitamix really shines, and there are so many healthy smoothie recipes out there you can whip up in the Vitamix. You’ll find just a few of them on Vitamix fan websites and in the included Vitamix cookbook, and you can drink them as is or add a scoop of a protein powder, peanut butter, or handful of almonds to make it more substantial.

Making a smoothie in a Vitamix is as easy as adding the ingredients and turning it on. Here are a few of my favourite healthy smoothies you have to try in the Vitamix:

1/4 cup (60 ml) strawberry low fat yogurt
1/4 cup (60 g) strawberry or vanilla nonfat frozen yogurt or ice cream

1/4 cup (60 ml) water

Directions

Place all ingredients into the Vitamix container in the order listed and secure lid.

Select Variable 1.

Turn machine on and slowly increase speed to Variable 10, then to High.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Oatmeal Smoothievitmaix-chocolate-smoothie.jpg

This one isn’t as healthy as the other two, but it really gives you an idea of what the Vitamix can do and if you want a protein-packed smoothie, this is it. Even if you use crunchy peanut butter, the Vitamix will whip it into the best smoothie you’ve ever tried. Recipe and photo by PamelaSalzman.com

Ingredients: 2 ripe bananas, peeled, cut into large chunks and frozen

½ cup almond milk
3 Tablespoons creamy, natural peanut butter
¼ cup old fashioned rolled oats
2 Tablespoons raw cacao powder or unsweetened cocoa powder
Sweetener: add your preferred sweetener to taste, such as honey, dates or coconut palm sugar.
½ cup – 1 cup ice, depending on how icy you want it

Directions

Add all ingredients to the Vitamix with the ice on top. Blend until very smooth. Smoothie may be refrigerated overnight or frozen.

Although it can do so much more than make smoothies, any one of these healthy recipes is enough of a reason to have a Vitamix on your counter.
