Over the past couple of years, many of us have shifted our focus to a greener, more eco-friendly lifestyle. It starts with small changes, like recycling more, using reusable shopping bags, and switching to LED light bulbs. A lot of us also began making more environmentally friendly choices when buying technology or home appliances by choosing Energy STAR certified options or sustainably made products that help save energy, money, and the earth.

While the holidays tend to generate more waste, you can keep your sustainability trend on track during the festive season by choosing eco-friendly gifts everyone will love. Read about a few green gift choices for yourself or anyone on your list who wants to go greener this year, then enter the contest and you might win some of these items.

From gifts that help save on electricity to growing their own fruit and vegetables, there are quite a few smart home devices for everyone on your gift list.

Living small is one way to make less of an impact on the globe. The only downside to living withs a smaller footprint is the lack of space for things like gardens and plants. With a Click and Grow Smart Indoor Garden, your gift recipient won’t need an outdoor garden. They can grow strawberries, basil, red kale or fruit and veggie mix right on a bookshelf.

Click and Grow has built-in sensors and Smart Soil to monitor every part of the life cycle of your plant. From seed to seedling to your plate, this smart garden lets you set it up and simply enjoy watching your plants grow.

Smart plugs help reduce electricity use

TP-Link smart plug

A smart plug is a plug that fits into any electric outlet and connects to your home’s Wi-Fi network. Once it’s plugged in you can add any of your small appliances, lights, or other devices to the plug and control them via an app. You can choose indoor smart plugs like the TP-Link Kasa Smart Wi-Fi Plug Lite or outdoor smart plugs like the TP-Link KP400 Smart Outdoor Plug.

Smart plugs are a thoughtful sustainable gift for an eco-friendly friend or family member. They will be able to turn any appliance or device on and off on a schedule. It also gives them control of that device when they aren’t home, so if they are worried they forgot to unplug a flat iron or coffee maker, they can use the app to turn it off instead of driving home.

Smart devices save time, energy, and money

A smart display is a great gift if you’re looking for something that will improve the functionality of any home. They help individuals and families save money by controlling all of their smart home devices in one location. You can set your smart lights on a schedule and sync them with other devices like thermostats so they automatically turn off when you’re not home. The Google Nest Learning Thermostat (shown above) remembers what temperatures you like, learns your schedule, and programs itself to conserve energy use.

Google smart display

There are a few smart display options including Google Nest Hub and Amazon Echo Show 5. Google Nest Hub works with Google Assistant and will stream video, turn on your lights, lock your doors, and even monitor your outdoor cameras. Amazon Echo Show 5 connects to the Alexa voice assistant. You can ask her to stream music, put on your favourite TV show, or control your smart home devices. One of the best parts of having a smart display is how you can use it to keep in touch without needing to travel. Instead of adding to the carbon emissions created by flying, you can make video calls to anyone, even if they are halfway around the world.

Go greener in the kitchen

A great way to help the environment at home is to be eco-smarter in the kitchen. Here are a few sustainable gifts that help you do that.

  1. I really like the Click and Grow Smart Indoor Garden – it would be perfect for my small apartment and allow me to grow some herbs as i love to cook.

  2. I am interest in SWFT Zip Fat Tire Electric City Bike so I don’t have to drive every where and can get fresh air and exercise

  3. I am most interested in the Smart gardening with Click and Grow. I’ve always wanted to grow my own vegetables, herbs and unfortunately I don’t have the right environment to do so. My garden is very shaded and I’ve never managed to grow anything successfully. This smart gardening device would not only allow me to grow my own vegetables but it would be year-round, an added plus during the long winters :-)! In addition, I feel that I would be set up for success with its smart soil setting. I eat plant based food and it would be a dream to be able to grow my own food!

  4. I am most interested in the Vitamix Powered Food Waste Recycler. I have always wanted to have a compost Closer to the house

  5. My husband and I are interest in alot of green/smart home tech. We have and love our nest, hub, and our own indoor garden setup for braving the winters with our fresh herbs and greens.

The item in the blog that interests us most is the Vitamix Food Recycler. We have looked at options like vermicomposting and Bokashi based units but it has been difficult to make the leap. Each solution seemed to have a major draw back for us. Space is at a premium indoors and Canadian weather throws a wrench into many outdoor composting options for half the year. I’ll be taking a closer look as the new generation of powered food recyclers.

    Thanks for a great post!

  6. Vitamix Powered Food Waste Recycler

this would be so good to use my food waste faster than composting love to try for my vegetable garden

  7. Which eco-friendly/green tech device interests me the most? I mean, wow…there’s a lot of great items to choose from. This giveaway package would be great for my entire family. My favourite item would be the Vitamix Powered Food Waste Recycler, because it would be great fertilzer in the summer (even if all the plants I tended for died), but in general it grinds up the food so it fits better in the organics bin, because space in the organics bin can be at a premium if yard work takes up a lot of space. Also, grinding it up creates more space on the countertop bin, because those tiny things fill up too quickly, and the city bans the use of biodegradable organics bags, so…the options are thin, which is why the Waste Recycler would be handy-dandy.

So that would be my favourite item, although all the items here are pretty epic too.

  8. I am most interested in the Vitamix Powered Food Waste Recycler. I have always wanted to have a compost but don’t have the setup for it.

  9. I was very excited to see that we can bring old tech material and batteries to be recycled at Best Buy! Exactly something I was looking for a few days ago.

  10. I am very interested in the Acer Aspire Vero 15.6″ Laptop, I am in the market for a new laptop so this meets my needs and is eco-friendly

  11. The Acer Aspire Vero 15.6″ Laptop is my number one choice for the high powerful graphic, processor, and environmentally friendly features

  12. I really like the Click and Grow Smart Indoor Garden – it would be perfect for my small apartment and allow me to grow some herbs as I am an avid cook.

  13. I am most interested in the Vitamix Powered Food Waste Recycler because right now we have a bucket that we use and it is messy and smelly.

  14. Interested in the LARQ PureVis Self-cleaning Water Bottle! It’s such a cool and convenient thing to have. I need to increase my water intake and the self cleaning part is so handy and eco friendly !

  15. I am really interested in the Ninebot Electric Scooter by Segway. Having an electric means of transportation would be so cool.

  16. Definitely the Energizer Battery Charger with Rechargeable Batteries as it seems we are always buying more and this would certainly help the environment, and our budget!

  17. I am most interested in the Vitamix Powered Food Waste Recycler – what an amazing product! Being able to make our own compost instead putting the food scraps in the green bin would be great.

  18. The eco-device I love in is the Acer Aspire Vero 15.6″ Laptop. I like the fact that it uses VersoSense software for more energy saving.

  19. I am most interested in the LARQ PureVis Self-cleaning Water Bottle as I find it difficult to clean water bottles and helps to know I am drinking clean water.

  20. The eco-device I am most interested in is the Acer Aspire Vero 15.6″ Laptop. I like that it’s made from 30% PCR plastic. Any reduction to CO2 emissions is helpful.

  21. I’m most interested in recycling old tech and batteries at Best Buy rather driving to the official government site to dispose of them.

  22. Between the composter and the electric adult bike I’m not sure I can choose. We are plant based at home and have a cute little garden that my daughter takes care of that could use all of those rich vitamins. My husband works about 7 minutes from home but down a BIG hill and it’s such a waste to think of how close he would be to walk or bike, but how hard it would be on the body. I’d love to win this for him!

  23. The wifi plug is what I’d like. I always leave stuff on accidentally, so being able to remotely turn it off would be cool.
