Have you ever thought about creating the ultimate playroom for your kids? I recently wrote a blog article all about the importance of play to children—mostly in the context of how certain types of toys can help with mental health and development. But what good are toys if you don’t have a place to use them? Today we rectify this oversight by helping you to design and create the perfect playroom for your young kids. We’ll supply a few useful suggestions, and your own imagination will supply the ultimate design. We’re talking kids’ furniture, toys, and a whole lot more here, so keep on reading for all the fun details.

Designing the Perfect Playroom

If you have small children, you may have noticed something quite peculiar… adult sized furniture is far too big for them! Luckily, there’s no shortage of Kids’ Room & Toddler Furniture available for you to choose from.

The first thing I might suggest you pick up is a Kids’ Table & Chairs set, of which there are numerous different options available. One colourful example that I particularly like is the KidKraft Modern 3-Piece Table and Chair Set (shown above).

This beautiful and sturdy wood built set comes with 2 chairs and a square-top table featuring bright colours in a durable finish that’s sure to please the eye of adult and child alike.

Perfect for kids ages 3-8, it’s the ideal place for kids to eat lunch, assemble puzzles, do schoolwork, play board games, work on arts and crafts projects, and a whole lot more.

Assembly is required for this set though, so do keep that in mind if it’s a consideration for you.

Some kids, believe it or not, actually enjoy studying. For these kids I suggest something like the PLATO Kids Study Desk, which is the ideal place both to get some serious work done and to spend some quality artistic time drawing and colouring.

Not only is this specially designed desk ergonomic (keeping the health of your child in mind), but it’s also height adjustable, so it actually grows right along with your child.

Featuring a large capacity storage drawer for supplies such as pens, pencils, books, and stationery, and suitable for kids ages 4 and up, this desk is ready to use when your child is ready to work (or play!).

Another piece of furniture that kids are sure to love is the KidKraft Bookcase with Reading Nook. Ok, so not every kid loves to read, but for those that do, this bookcase and reading nook combination piece is simply perfect!

Falling under the classification of Other Kids’ Room Furniture, this nook features large shelves to hold their books and toys, as well as a comfortable cushioned seat for curling up with a good book.

Great for kids ranging in age from 3 to 10, this piece is all about encouraging a healthy love of reading from a very early age.

When kids own their own books and have their own library shelves to store them in (as well as a cozy place to read them), there’s a pretty good chance that they’ll come to appreciate books and continue to enjoy them as they grow older.

The KidKraft Bookcase above is suggestive of another important point when designing a proper kids’ playroom, and that is storage space. Storage space is key when planning an area for kids to play in and call their own. There are a number of different ways to achieve this goal, but a big favourite with me is a standard toy chest.

Consulting my wife, however, resulted in us finding a very cool alternative—the Disney Minnie Mouse 9-Bin Toy Organizer (shown above).

This wood and fabric organizer features 9 handy bins of various shapes and sizes, thus allowing kids to organize their toys accordingly.

It’s also a great way to encourage them to clean up after themselves and to teach them organization skills, which is certainly a nice benefit.

Designed for kids in the 3-6 year age range, this easy to assemble bin will have them keeping their playroom nicely organized and being proud of themselves for doing so. It’s a total win win situation!

Many times, a child’s playroom may in fact also be their bedroom, so it makes perfect sense to consider some Kids Room & Toddler Furniture that’s perfect for the bedroom.

To me, nothing more perfectly fits the combined bedroom and playroom theme than a bed that’s also a toy. Well, the Turbo Race Car Kids Bed may not be an actual toy, but it’s sure a cool place to sleep!

With dimensions of 121cm (47.64 inches) in width, 57cm (22.44″) in height, and 239cm (94.09″) in depth, this bed is suitable for kids of all ages—and even more-so if they enjoy race cars (chrome coloured rims and a rear spoiler give this bed a true racing feel!).

Made from durable blow-moulded plastic and designed to fit a standard twin-sized mattress (using a box spring is optional), this car/bed combo is tough, comfortable, and 100% kid ready! Just be prepared to do some assembly yourself with this one.

No kids’ playroom would ever be complete without some really fun toys to fill it with. For this reason I wanted to suggest something big and bold—something like the Melissa & Doug Chef’s Wooden Modern Play Kitchen.

This set comes with nearly everything they’ll need to have a great time role playing in their own mini kitchen. There’s a stovetop, an oven, a microwave, a fridge with ice dispenser, a freezer, and a sink, just to name a few of the major components.

You will have to buy the cooking utensils and food items separately to really set everything off, but I’m sure you get the idea—an item like this can be super fun for kids, and it can also be a good way to introduce them to the idea of eventually helping out in the big people’s kitchen for real.

Finally, it’s always good to get toys and furnishings that can serve more than one purpose. This can not only help to save on space, but it’s also a great way to get more value out of a  single purchase.

Consider, for example, the KidKraft Storage Easel—a toy that provides multiple different play options all in one shot.

For instance, its double-sided design features a chalkboard on one side and a dry erase board on the other.

Or, kids can draw or paint directly on paper that rolls down from above.

And there’s plenty of storage space with this easel as well (trays for all manner of supplies line the bottom of the easel), along with 3 spill-proof paint canisters that can be sealed back up after use to help prevent messes.

Ideal for kids ages 3-10, this easel is the perfect way to put the finishing touches on a well thought-out playroom for your young child.

As you can see, there’s a whole lot to consider when designing an awesome playroom for your kids. Luckily, Best Buy has you covered with everything you’ll need both to start and finish the project!
