Best Buy partnered with Digital First Canada to bring a content creator workshop to Indigenous youth in Toronto. The “Road to Freedom” Indigenous Creator Program was designed to help participants learn content creator techniques using the latest tools. This unique program provided education and inspiration, followed up with tech donations so over 200 kids and teens from ten different communities could continue creating content and telling their stories. This initiative is just one way that Best Buy Canada continues to support communities where we do business. Here is a brief video overview of the event.
The Road to Freedom program was designed to bring indigenous youth, content creators, and technology experts from Best Buy together to share knowledge. Participants learned how to get started creating their own content and learned how to use the tools that makes creating and streaming content possible. Most importantly, they were inspired to tell their own stories.
Inspiring Indigenous youth and setting them up for success
Best Buy is setting these kids and teens up for success by donating the tech they need to hone their new skills, create content, and stream it to the world. Geek Squad is also installing all the equipment for studios built in five Indigenous communities in southern Ontario. Geek Squad Agent, Andrew Raposo, was at the event and is helping with the studio installs. “My favourite part of the experience was seeing all the kids’ faces once the studio was fully built, and knowing that I was part of an initiative that could enable them to make a career for themselves. Knowing that Best Buy Canada takes part in projects like this is honestly the cherry on top of my dream career.”
Imagine the opportunity for these youth: not only do they now have the ability to tell their stories, they also have the tools of the trade to turn their ideas into reality.
