Do you ever wonder what happens to your electronics when you dispose of them? Best Buy knows. In celebration of Earth Month and in partnership with the Electronic Products Recycling Association (EPRA), we are excited to bring you the Upgrade My Environment Contest. This contest encourages students to recycle their unwanted electronics for a chance to win a $250 Best Buy gift card or a $10,000 technology package for their school. Find out when this contest takes place and how to participate in this article.
Why recycle your unwanted electronics
Did you just upgrade your smartphone and are ready to part ways with your old one? Or did your TV just die and you’re now wondering how to get rid of it? Don’t throw them in the trash. According to ERPA, over one million tonnes of electronics have been diverted from Canadian landfills and illegal export. Instead, recycle them!
Recycling your old electronics not only decreases environmental issues for our planet by diverting e-waste from landfills, but it also allows for recovering and reusing resources that can be put back into the manufacturing supply chain and used to create new devices. It also ensures the safe and secure destruction of the data stored on the device, as well as protects the health and safety of workers and handlers. It’s a win-win!
Recycle your old electronics at Best Buy
Recycling your old electronics is just as easy as bringing them to a Best Buy store! Simply go to the customer service desk with your unwanted items and our Blue Shirts will help you. You can drop off and recycle many products from cellular devices to cords, GPS, and musical instruments—even if you haven’t bought them from us. Check out this page for a full list of products that can be recycled.
Upgrade My Environment contest
Elementary and high school students across Canada are invited to recycle their unwanted electronics at their nearest Best Buy store between April 1st and April 30th for free, secure recycling. The school with the most recycling brought in will win a $10,000 technology package from Best Buy.
How to enter
- Bring a piece of technology you want to recycle to your nearest Best Buy store.
- Students will be given a ballot with a unique number.
- Go to recycleMYelectronics.ca/upgrade and enter your ballot number.
Note: Don’t forget to include your school’s name with the entry!
This contest runs from April 1st until April 30th.
Remember, the more students enter from a school, the higher that school’s chances of winning the $10,000 technology grand prize; so, share this contest with friends to increase your chances and your school’s chance of winning!
Perhaps give us an idea of what becomes of old electronics. It might be interesting to learn.
Hi Diane, that is a great idea. I’ll send the pitch to the teams working on this program and ask for their input. Best regards, Martin
Excellent program! What to do with outmoded electronics is on a different level now with so many types! Keep up the good work!

Looking for someone to contact me about a school initiative linking this contest with our “earth week” activities.
