A hair dryer is a must-have for a lot of reasons, and although some people use them because they don’t have a lot of time in the morning to air dry their hair, others use them because they want the cuticle on their hair to be smooth so their hair is shiny.
But not all hair dryers are created equal, and some blow such a hot stream of air they end up damaging your hair when they are drying it. That’s one of the reasons why Dyson, a company that’s well known for coming up with creative solutions to every day problems, has created the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer.
As you can guess, because it’s made by Dyson the Dyson Supersonic isn’t just any hair dryer: it’s an intelligent hair dryer that’s designed specifically to keep your hair damage-free and shiny. How can it do that while still blowing your hot air at your hair? Here’s what I learned about the Dyson Supersonic after testing it out myself.
The Dyson Supersonic: not your average hair dryer
From the first time you pick it up you’ll agree that the Dyson Supersonic is not like your average hair dryer. The body of the hair dryer is small, light, and easy to grip. The nozzle itself is round and flat, and all of the components are located in the handle of the hair dryer and the nozzle. That means the Dyson Supersonic is easier to hold and less top-heavy.
There is one button on the back that you touch to turn to three speeds: fast drying, regular drying, and styling. There’s also a heat button with four settings including 100°C Fast drying and styling, 80°C Regular drying, 60°C Gentle drying, and 28°C Constant cold.
The on/off button takes just a touch to get it running, and the Constant cold button lets you cool the air emitting from the hair dryer at the touch of a button. Even if you have it on heat level 3, the second you touch the cool button the air turns cold. That helps you set a hair style when you’re in the middle of blow-drying.
Testing the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer
Using the Dyson Supersonic hair dyer is as easy as plugging it in and turning it on. Because it has such a sleek appearance and is so simple to use you might think it’s just a basic hair dyer, but the Dyson Supersonic is a smart hair dryer with a lot going on behind the nozzle.
Powered by the Dyson Digital Motor V9
Just like Dyson vacuums have their own motor, the Dyson Supersonic has the Dyson Digital Motor V9 inside. It has 13 impeller blades that revolve up to 110,000 times per minute. Having it located in the handle of the hair dryer means that there’s less vibration, and it’s quieter because it runs on one inaudible frequency.
The only hairdryer with an Integrated Intelligent microprocessor
It’s hard to believe that a hair dryer could have a microprocessor inside, but the Dyson Supersonic does. That microprocessor connects to a glass bead thermistor to measure the air temperature leaving the hair dryer 20 times per second. That keeps the air temperature under complete control, so you don’t have random searing blasts of heat when you’re drying your hair.
The Dyson Supersonic uses negative ions
I’ve had only heard of negative ions when I bought a salt lamp, but the Dyson Supersonic uses negative ions to reduce static in your hair after blow drying.
Magnetic attachments are easy to remove and attach
The Dyson Supersonic comes with three attachments: a smoothing nozzle with a wide opening to let you dry and style at the same time, a styling concentrator that focuses high-velocity air on one section at a time, and a diffuser that lets you blow dry your curls perfectly while reducing frizz.
Because there’s a magnetic base, the attachments pop off and on very easily. I like how you can attach them and switch mid-drying your hair.
Blow drying your hair with the Dyson Supersonic
I dried my hair with the Dyson Supersonic and I was so impressed. It’s designed to reduce heat damage so your hair is shinier, and I really do feel that helps in that area.
Once you pick it up you’ll realize it’s easy to hold in your hand. I found my arm didn’t get as tired using it, and I have thick hair so it takes awhile to dry. As far as noise is concerned, even at the top speed setting the Supersonic isn’t loud or shrill in your ear. It definitely sounds like a hair dryer, but it doesn’t have that harsh edge some may have.
Overall, after drying my hair with the Dyson Supersonic I noticed that it took less time to dry, there was less static after I did and my hair did seem smoother. I usually let my hair air dry, and because of that I can never quite replicate that blow out look my hair dresser so easily achieves with a hair dryer and a flat iron. Although I might still take a flat iron to it after I dry, using the Dyson really did make it easier to style.
I do have a natural curl to my hair so the diffuser would come in handy, but I didn’t try it during my test. I did try both the smoothing nozzle and the styling concentrator, and they were both amazing. The styling concentrator pushed a straight stream of air into one area of my hair, and I was surprised at how powerful it was.
Overall thoughts on the Dyson Supersonic
If you’re going to dry your hair with a hair dryer, you really can’t do better than the Dyson Supersonic. I liked everything about it, from how quiet it is to how easy it is to use, and I can see it being a must-have if you’re a hair stylist or if you want to avoid damaging your hair further with hot air.
You can find the Dyson Supersonic on Best Buy right now.
My biggest complaint with hair dryers is the noise so this quieter hairdryer is just what I would need
