Xbox Series S officially revealed

Rumours have been flying around that a cheaper, less powerful version of the Xbox Series X would be released this holiday season. And, early this morning, Xbox officially confirmed that indeed these rumours were true. Say hello to Xbox Series S! Priced at $379.99 and launching November 10, 2020. The console offers next-gen performance and is the smallest Xbox ever.

Take a look at the first official picture of Xbox Series S below. You’ll notice that it takes a more traditional console design approach, similar to Xbox One S. It has a large black cooling vent on the top of the console and there is no optical drive. This means that all your games will be digital on the Xbox Series S.

Xbox promises to share more info soon on the Xbox Series S, and we’ll be here to give you all those details. In the meantime, checkout the official Xbox Series S World Premier Reveal Trailer.

Detailed specs on Xbox Series X Processor and Graphics chip

At the annual Hot Chips conference, where engineers and chip designers meet to discuss the latest technologies and products, Microsoft held a keynote speech detailing the Xbox Series X processor and graphics chips. Many very technical aspects regarding the Xbox Series X were discussed. The Advanced Processing Unit, APU, which integrates both the CPU and GPU into one chip is roughly the same size as the Xbox One X APU. However, transistor counts have more than doubled relative from 6.6 billion to 15.4 billion.

Furthermore, key interest is in the graphic below, which shows the evolution of the graphics processing power in Xbox consoles. You can see, the Xbox Series X is roughly 9 times more powerful than Xbox One. It has advanced features such as ray tracing and can output all the way up to 8K resolution with 60 frames-per-second.

As for the Series X’s processor, it contains an 8-core/16 thread server class AMD Zen 2 CPU. It was noted that the processor is based on TSMC’s 7nm “enhanced” node. Essentially this means it uses a compact design that runs faster and uses less power. Needless to say, the Xbox Series X is a powerhouse.

Finally, I found this last bit of information the most interesting. Microsoft indicated that the production of this chip was higher than the Xbox One X. They didn’t say specifically, but listed “$” as the cost on the Xbox One and Xbox One S, “$+” for the Xbox One X, and “$++” for the Xbox Series X.

Halo Infinite delayed

Halo Infinite made quite a splash at its debut in the Xbox Games ShowCase digital event in July. Scheduled to launch with the Series X, we got a glimpse of what 343 Industries had in store for the latest entry in the iconic Halo franchise. However, in early August, both Xbox and 343 Industries announced that the game will be delayed into 2021.

The reason cited for the delay, was that the team needs more time to finish critical work necessary to launch the game. Despite the disappointing news, we learned that Halo Infinite’s multiplayer mode will be free to play. Also, it supports up to a whopping 120 frames per second. While I am disappointed that Halo Infinite will no longer be a launch title for Xbox Series X, I’m glad that both Xbox and 343 Industries are taking the extra time to make needed changes to the game.

Xbox Series X global launch month revealed

Release date and pricing are the two most common questions I get asked about Xbox Series X. Xbox officially confirmed that Xbox Series X will launch globally this November. And, over 100 optimized games will be available for Series X this year. Not long after the global launch announcement, rumours started to swirl around the exact date. However, there is still no official date other than November, 2020.

Games, games and more games

For those wondering what games you’ll have to play this year, there will be plenty. There are more than 50 new games planned for 2020 across generations and optimized for Xbox Series X. Games include Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Watch Dogs: Legion, Dirt 5, Madden NFL 21 and more. With smart delivery, you only have to buy these games once to play the best versions for your console.

Likewise, Game Pass subscribers have quite a few games developed for Series X coming to the service. For example, exclusives like Tetris Effect: Connected, Scorn, The Medium and more.

Additionally, there will be more than 40 popular games newly optimized to take full advantage of Series X. For example, Destiny 2, Forza Horizon 4, Gears 5, and more will be fully optimized.

Project xCloud comes to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate

Corporate Vice president of Project xCloud, Kareem Choudhry announced that the company’s cloud gaming service is coming out of public preview and being added to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate on September 15, 2020. As a result, the move to Game Pass Ultimate subscribers gives gamers the opportunity to play the games they want, with the people they want, anywhere they want. And, sometime next year, Project xCloud servers will be upgraded to Xbox Series X hardware!
