Puyo Puyo Tetris 2

Did you know that Tetris is the most well-known puzzle game globally except for Japan? That’s right! In Japan, the most popular puzzle game is Puyo Puyo and it’s been that way for almost 30 years. What do you get when you mix the two games together? Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 of course!

The game features a brand-new story with both new and returning characters. Additionally, there are special mission conditions, an overworld map to explore, and an RPG-like progression system found in the new Skill Battle ruleset. Furthermore, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 features a new “auto difficulty” that adjusts to the way you play.

Puzzle fans, are you itching to play yet? Keep reading and find out why Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is so darn addicting.

Puyo Puyo Tetris 2

All new story and stages

Puyo Puyo Tetris 2‘s adventure mode features a brand new story that is pretty robust. It takes place after the first game and a strange new force is yet again trying to merge both Puyo Puyo and Tetris worlds together. Several friendly and colourful faces return, along with new characters who are introduced along the way.

There are a total of 7 worlds in adventure mode. And these worlds are split between stages and side missions for you to explore. To be quite honest, I was pretty shocked at the amount of content that is included with the game. It’s one of many modes that add a great deal of value to the game’s overall package.

The best puzzles games combined into one package

Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is a mix of, you guessed it, Puyo Puyo and Tetris gameplay. Much like its predecessor, you can play both styles separately and can even switch between Puyo Puyo and Tetris within the same battle. While the majority of people playing have probably already played and are familiar with how Tetris works, Puyo Puyo is a bit different.

Your goal in Puyo Puyo is to link four matching Puyos to eliminate them. And, you can chain combos by carefully stacking them, which gives you additional points and fills up your opponents screen with trash. This same technique of stacking works in Tetris as well. Each stage has specific criteria for reaching up to 3 stars for completing it, such as winning in a specific amount of time.

New to Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 are Skill Battles. This is an RPG-style mode that includes a team of 3 characters, who affect your HP, defence and attack point stats when they attack. Each character has a specific skill that influences gameplay such as stronger attacks or restoring health. Once you lose all your HP, the last player standing wins. Furthermore, you’ll unlock new content such as characters, stages and music tracks by completing stages.

There is even a mode called Fusion, which allows you to play both Tetris and Puyo Puyo on one board. Though you might think it would be confusing, it’s actually quite fun and addicting. While the game’s main focus is on multiplayer, there are some modes for single players. There is a challenge section that offers more traditional gameplay variants. Here you will find modes such as spring and marathon Tetris and Puyo Puyo modes. There is even a survival type game, Endless Fever, that doesn’t stop until you are defeated.

Bright colourful graphics and an energetic soundtrack

Visually, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 looks better than the original. It’s filled with bright colourful cartoon characters and backgrounds. In fact, some of the backgrounds are so mesmerizing that it’s hard to concentrate on the actual game itself. Unfortunately, none of the special features such as adaptive triggers are haptics are used on the PS5’s DualSense wireless controller.

In addition to a cheerful, bright and energetic soundtrack, you can unlock several cosmetic options. These include new player icons, alternative voice packs for each character and different designs for the Tetriminos and Puyos. In Story mode cutscenes are fully voiced and well done for the most part. There are times when these scenes seem to drag on and on.

Multiplayer is why you will keep coming back for more

It’s no secret, what makes Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 so darn addicting is the game’s multiplayer modes. Up to 4 players can play locally or online. Pretty much any part of the game you can play with friends. Some of my favourite multiplayer modes include Party mode, which adds power-up items to help you against your opponents. For example, there is an item that disables your opponent’s ability to rotate blocks.

When playing local multiplayer, it’s actually quite funny to see the reaction on your opponent’s face when they realize they can’t rotate blocks. And, Big Bang mode has you clearing pre-set lines within a certain time limit. Your goal isn’t to get the most points or fill your opponent’s screen, it’s to make gigantic combos. It’s easy to get lost in the fun for hours on end!

However, the ranked Puzzle Leagues are my most favourite. This includes 4 individual leagues, which allows you to go head-to-head with players from around the world in Puyo Puyo and Tetris matches, a mix of the 2 and skill battles.

Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is fun and quite addicting to play

If you are into puzzle games, then you’ll really enjoy Puyo Puyo Tetris 2. There’s a lot of content included in the game for both single and multiplayer fun. In a time where we are spending a lot of time at home, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is a great way to pass the time and have a boatload of fun both locally and online.

The new characters are wild, wacky and dripping with personality. In all, the game contains 28 playable characters with more on the way. The new story, while it may seem silly, adds even more value to the game and is fun to play. In all, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 includes something for everyone, that all ages can enjoy.

+ Brand-new story that is both fun and hilarious
+ Colourful and crisp cartoon style graphics
+ Plenty of single and multiplayer game modes to choose from
+ Easy to pick up and play
+ Redesigned UI makes it easier to navigate and find things

– None of the PS5’s DualSense wireless controller functions are used
– Some of the character’s voice acting is borderline annoying
– Not a whole lot of new features have been added to the game

  1. I’ve been playing Tetris ever since I got my first Gameboy, it’s a game that I can just keep coming back to.

I’ve tried Puyo Puyo a few times but so far it hasn’t really clicked with me. I think I need to keep trying because it looks like a puzzle game I could enjoy.

Thanks for the review Jon, perhaps I’ll try it out!
