PlayStation Classic

Over the past few years, retro gaming Plug N Play consoles have become extremely popular. As a result, it was only a matter of time before Sony would throw their hat into the ring. Say hello to the PlayStation Classic!

Launching on December 3, 2018, the PlayStation Classic is a smaller, lighter version of Sony’s beloved PlayStation console. As you may know, I’ve been a life long gamer and the PlayStation has held a special place in my heart over the years. Moreover, it’s been 23 years since the PlayStation took the gaming world by storm and never looked back.

To say I’m thrilled about this announcement from Sony would be a massive understatement. The PlayStation was the first video game console to ship 100 million units world wide. And, to offer beautifully 3D rendered graphics at home. Now, with the PlayStation Classic, you can experience 20 of the greatest PlayStation games of all-time.

What games come with the PlayStation Classic?

The PlayStation Classic comes with 20 of the best PlayStation games. Although at the time of writing, Sony has announced 5 games. Final Fantasy VII, Jumping Flash, Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, and Wild Arms will all come loaded on the PlayStation Classic. We can expect a full list of games that will be included on the PlayStation Classic in the coming weeks.

If you’re familiar with the PlayStation, you’ll know right away how incredible these announced games are. For those who have never owned the PlayStation, these games represent some of best released on the system.

PlayStation ClassicFinal Fantasy VII – an epic role playing classic

Final Fantasy VII is revered by many, including yours truly, as one of the best Final Fantasy games in the franchise. It originally began development as a SNES game, and the colossal RPG moved over to the PlayStation because of the massive storage space the CD-ROM format offered. With an epic story, advanced gameplay, and beautiful 3D graphics—many say that Final Fantasy VII helped solidify the PlayStation as the leading console.

PlayStation ClassicJumping Flash – the first platform video game in true 3D

Jumping Flash launched shortly after the PlayStation and was an early showcase for 3D graphics and showed what the PlayStation was capable of. As a result, it holds the Guinness World Record as the first platform video game in true 3D! You play in a first-person view as you take on the role of Robbit, a robotic rabbit with power-ups. It’s 3D platforming gameplay is some of the best on the PlayStation.

PlayStation ClassicRidge Racer Type 4 – epic arcade-style racing

The last in the series released on PlayStation, Ridge Racer Type 4 is the pinnacle of arcade-style racing. Featuring powersliding, a Grand Prix mode, and a Time Attack mode with the first split-screen mode in the home console series. There are 320 cars to unlock and an additional one that is modeled after Bandai Namco’s infamous Pac-Man.

PlayStation ClassicTekken 3 – the creme de la creme of fighting games

This game was critically acclaimed when it released—scoring many 10 out of 10s. It features a large cast of characters, many making their appearance for the first time. Like its predecessors, Tekken 3 features deep gameplay and this time an added emphasis on sidestepping in or out of the background.

PlayStation ClassicWild Arms – a unique RPG experience

Wild Arms combines elements of traditional RPGs and 3D battle sequences, which showcased the PlayStation’s 3D capabilities. As a result, this cult-classic game spawned a total of 6 games in the series over the years. This game is unique in that it includes an American Old West motif. In addition, it includes traditional science fiction and fantasy elements.

What’s included in the PlayStation Classic box?

So we’ve got a list of some of the games included with the PlayStation Classic, but what else comes with the micro-sized console? Here is the full list of contents:

  • PlayStation Classic Console
  • Two wired PlayStation controllers
  • HDMI Cable
  • USB cable (to power the system)

I want to mention that if you don’t have a nearby USB port to power the PlayStation Classic, you’ll have to purchase a USB AC adapter separate. I think it’s great that Sony included two PlayStation controllers. This means that you can play multiplayer out of the box!

The two included controllers look like exact replicas of the original PlayStation controllers. They even include the icon PlayStation logo and the exact button layout as the original controllers.

Will the PlayStation Classic be the hottest in gaming this holiday season?

Given the huge popularity of other Plug N Play retro consoles, I fully expect the PlayStation Classic to be one of the hottest items this holiday season. With 20 games, full line up to be announced in the coming weeks, the PlayStation Classic offers hundreds upon hundreds of hours of gameplay.

The PlayStation is one of the most influential consoles of all-time. It has one of the best game line ups in console history, features stunning 3D graphics, and helped establish Sony as a major player on the gaming world. The PlayStation Classic allows you to either relive, or experience for the first time some of the most iconic games in history.

  1. Of all people I am big on nostalgia, however I am not ready to yet pay for something that hasn’t listed what games it comes with.
Currently, Tekken would be of some interest but not much.

    I’ll wait and see.

As always, thank you Jon and BestBuy for amazing and insightful content here.

    • Thanks for your input Wayne. Hopefully we will have a full list of games soon. I’ll be sure to update this article when the list is out.
