PlayStation 5

If you are a PlayStation fan, then today was like Christmas. Not only did we get a glimpse of the PS5 console itself, we were also treated to a look at next-gen games running on actual PlayStation 5 hardware. There were a wide variety of games shown from first party, third party and indies. In all 28 games were shown running on PlayStation 5 hardware.

While I can’t cover all 28 games here, we’ll take a look at some of the more notable games coming to PlayStation 5.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Genre: Action-adventure
Developer: Insomniac Games
Release date: Holiday 2020

A sequel to the 2018 PS4 mega blockbuster, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is an all new adventure and story in the Spider-Man universe. You assume the role of Miles Morales, a fifteen-year-old teenager, friend of Peter Parker and son of police officer Jefferson Davis—as he becomes his own Spider-Man. It’s now Miles’ turn to be a hero, protect innocent citizens and face new challenges. And, you’ll feel every punch, venom blast, web shot, and web-sing with the DualSense wireless controller’s haptic feedback. The promises to be one of the PlayStation 5’s biggest titles this holiday season.

Gran Turismo 7

Genre: Sim racing
Developer: Polyphony Digital
Release date: Unannounced

Sony’s iconic racing sim is back and is coming to PlayStation 5. Gran Turismo 7 includes classic vehicles and tracks, along with the best features from previous games. The DualSense’s haptic feedback and the PS5’s immersive 3D audio are integral parts of gameplay. The map shown in the trailer below looks as if it will be used in the game’s campaign mode but not much else is known at this time.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

Genre: Platform, third-person shooter
Developer: Insomniac Games
Release date: Unannounced

One of PlayStation’s most famous duos are making their way to PS5. In this brand new adventure, the duo travel through different dimensions as they are collapsing on one another. In the trailer shown, we see how seamlessly the duo travels through dimensions thanks to the PS5’s super fast SSD. At the end of the trailer, Ratchet & Clank get separated and Clank bumps into an all new character. Take a look for yourself!

Sackboy A Big Adventure

When I saw this game, I literally jumped for joy. I’ve been waiting for a proper platforming game starring the iconic PlayStation hero Sackboy, and now my wishes have been answered. Sackboy A big Adventure is a brand new 3D platforming adventure. As you can see in the trailer below, there are plenty of colourful and wacky environments to make your way around. Astro’s Playroom

Genre: Platform
Developer: Japan Studios
Release date: Holiday 2020

Astro Bot: Rescue mission is one of my favourite PSVR titles and it’s getting a sequel on PS5. In fact, Astro’s Playroom comes loaded on every PS5 console! Astro’s Playroom has four worlds, each based on the PS5’s console components. This innovative new title helps showcase the new features of the DualSense controller and looks absolutely gorgeous.

Destruction All Stars

Genre: Vehicular-combat
Developer: Lucid Games
Release date: Unannounced

In what looks like to be the spiritual successor to Destruction Derby on PlayStation, Destruction All Stars is packed full of vehicular action. Your goal is simple, wreck as many cars as possible and crush anyone in your way.

Horizon Forbidden West

Genre: Action role-playing
Developer: Guerrilla Games
Release date: Unannounced

Quite possibly the biggest announcement of the show was Horizon Forbidden West, a sequel to the magnificent Horizon Zero Dawn. Aloy returns and is looking to save the new world. Her journey is filled with powerful and threatening machines, and rugged terrain that she must overcome. Her adventure leads her under water and across rocky deserts, abandoned towns, and icy cliffs.

PS5 is launching holiday 2020

Sony knew they had to come out swinging and they did just that. While a lot of what was shown today either didn’t have a release date or is scheduled for 2021, I’m confident we will see more games that will be available at launch in the near future.

Not only did we get to finally see what the PlayStation 5 looks like, they opened the show by announcing that one of the highest selling games ever, GTA V is coming to PlayStation 5 next year. Also Deahtloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo that were shown at E3 2019 are PS5 console exclusives. Deathloop is coming holiday 2020 and Ghostwire: Tokyo is launching in 2021.

Furthermore, Capcom showed a brand new Resident Evil game titled Resident Evil Village that is set to launch in 2021. And we got a better look at Godfall coming holiday 2020 from Gearbox Publishing. While a launch date and price for the console is still unknown, Sony assured us that there is more news to come in the following months.

  1. These are some exciting games! I haven’t had an opportunity to play Horizon Zero Dawn, but that series looks really cool and I’m excited to see more of Horizon Forbidden West.
