New details are finally emerging on the impending release of FIFA 21. In addition to cover athlete Kylian Mbappé, EA Sports teases new multiplayer modes, gameplay innovations, FIFA Ultimate Team customizations, and much more. Here is a breakdown of all the latest news on the annual football franchise.

Your 2021 FIFA cover athlete

Leading off the latest FIFA 21 news is the reveal of cover athlete Kylian Mbappé. The Paris Saint-Germain superstar provides a youthful spark to the series. At just 21 years old, he is already turning heads and setting new records, many in relation to his impressive achievements at such an early age.

This makes becoming the FIFA 21 cover athlete just another in a long list of early accolades for Mbappé. It’s truly an honour that many football greats with lengthy careers have yet to experience. Professing his passion for the FIFA series since childhood, Kylian describes becoming the cover athlete as a “dream come true”.

More ways to play with friends

EA is going even deeper with its online “VOLTA” mode this year. Football is meant to be a communal experience, and in “VOLTA SQUADS” teams of 4 can join together for a “social street football experience”. They can also join the community at large for friendly 5 v. 5 co-operative matches.

EA Sports FIFA executive producer Aaron McHardy states that the social elements of FIFA 21 are designed to bring fans together to a greater extent than ever before. This interactivity will stretch from the smallest gatherings through to the professional pitch. It sounds promising, but we will have to wait to find out more specific details on McHardy’s claim that there will be “more ways than ever to play the beautiful game of football we all love.”

More upgrades and innovations

FIFA 21 further claims to have the most comprehensive career mode to date. Gameplay mechanics with bolstered content include Interactive Match Sim, Player Development, and more depth in matches, transfers, and training.

On the Ultimate Team side, EA Sports is promising a vast expansion to FUT Club customization. This includes a range of new ways to customize the appearance of both the stands as well as the pitch. There will also be options for players looking to carry their FUT progress over to next generation consoles.

Finally, it wouldn’t be a new year without the promise of improvements to the core gameplay itself. In FIFA 21 EA Sports claims more realism on the pitch than ever before. This is thanks in part to new developments such as Agile Dribbling for new ways to fool defenders, Positioning Personality for more accurate AI space and time awareness, and the Natural Collision System for smoother animations and player interactions.
