Blood & Truth

Blood & Truth is yet another impressive game for PSVR that shows Sony is not done with the hardware yet. With talk of the next generation, you’d think that the PlayStation 4 and PSVR would be winding down. Heck no! In March, Sony revealed that more than 4.2 million PSVR systems had been sold and that PSVR owners had a lot more to look forward to.

Back when the PSVR launched in 2016, SIE London Studio released its first foray into the VR world with PlayStation VR Worlds. Composed of 5 different experiences, The London Heist gave us a 30-minute experience in London’s gritty criminal underworld. It focused on story and immersion and gave us a glimpse of what was to eventually come with Blood & Truth.

Let’s take a look at what makes Blood & Truth a must have title for PSVR owners.

Blood & Truth

An Immersive action-packed Hollywoodesque narrative

The story in Blood & Truth is very Hollywoodesque. You assume the role of Ryan Marks, a former Special Forces solider. You are out for revenge against a London crime boss who is dead set on taking over your well-established family run criminal business. As a result, the entire city is now a warzone and you must keep your family safe.

While the story is nothing to write home about, you can see it got its inspiration from movies such as the Bourne file series and John Wick. SIE London Studio does a good job and keeping the story moving forward and keeping you motivated. Overall, the story is a giant rollercoaster ride that is filled with non-stop action from start to finish. And in some instances, had me wondering what was next.

Blood & Truth

Intuitive and compelling gameplay

What makes Blood & Truth one of the most compelling PSVR games to date is its superb gameplay mechanics with the PlayStation Move controllers. The game is an almost perfect blend of cover-based shooting that excels as each one of the PlayStation Move controllers has its own unique use.

For example, one Move controller is where you carry your weapon and the other Move controller is used to reload your weapons. And, the best part about it is that it is all done seamlessly. Using the Move controllers to grab your handgun from your hip to shoot, or grabbing your assault riffle from your back feels smooth and natural.

Gun battles are intense and satisfying. As enemies approach, pulling the Move trigger and taking them out gives you a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. Movement in Blood & Truth is done in the same manner that light gun shooting games such as Time Crisis and House of the Dead, via a rail system. With a simple press of either the X or O button, you’ll move from point to point with ability to strafe to nearby cover mid-combat.

Blood & Truth

Hollywood style production values

As with Blood & Truth‘s Hollywoodesque story, its presentation is just as grand. SIE London Studios takes full advantage of the PSVR offering cinematic shots and impressive explosions. From intense car chases, climbing ladders, cracking open safes, moving through vents, jumping from windows and slow-motion gun fights, there is no shortage of action.

At some points, it’s almost like watching a movie unfold right in front of your very own eyes. However, there are some graphical glitches here and there that I noticed, but nothing that ever stopped me from enjoying my 6-8-hour experience. The sense you get of actually be there is phenomenal and impressed me every time I played the game.

The game’s soundtrack is a perfect fit with the on-screen action. It feels like something you might hear in James Bond movie. And, the game contains licensed music from the likes of Zdot, JME, Eyez, Kamakaze, and Ocean Wisdom. There is a point in the game where you hear a song on the radio in the car and then it subtlety becomes part of the game’s soundtrack itself.

Blood & Truth

Blood & Truth is one of the top PSVR games that is best played with PS Move controllers

Blood & Truth is one of my favourite PlayStation VR games to date. It shows you just what the PSVR is capable of delivering and how far it has come since launch. Aside from the Hollywood style story, immersive environments and explosive action, the game isn’t perfect.

There were a few times that I had issues with tracking, even when sitting the recommended 2 metres away from the PS Camera. With that being said, I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the game. If you own a PSVR, Blood & Truth is yet another must have game that you should not miss out on.

+ High octane action with Hollywood style production values
+ Wide variety of different gameplay mechanics
+ Immersive world that makes you feel like you are actually there
+ Fun to play

– Some technical tracking issues popped up every now and then
– Challenge mode adds little replay value
