The holidays are almost here. For many people, that means traveling to see loved ones or just getting away. Naturally, when you are traveling, you’ll want to bring some games to play on the go to keep you busy.

This year we saw an overwhelming amount of fantastic video games. However, some of them are better suited to gaming on the go than others. Whether you’re planning a trip across the country or to someplace warm and sunny, these are my picks for the best Nintendo Switch games to play on the go.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

In this game you play a professor whose job is to prepare your students for battle by teaching them the rules of combat. Fire Emblem: Three Houses is a great pick up and take anywhere game as you can grind it out in many of the free battles to level up your character. Additionally, the academy has multiple levels , many different locations to explore and people to meet. Moreover, you can get to know your students by fishing, gardening and sharing meals with them.

Square Enix’s epic RPG made its way to the Switch and it was worth the wait. The game’s unique turn-based combat allows you to move around in real-time. And, while you are exploring the land, you can choose to avoid enemy encounters by simply walking away or face them head on. Battles can be lengthy but Dragon Quest XI S gives you the ability to increase the battle speed. This keeps the battle moving at a good and and maximizing your time in gaining XP for your characters.

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening

Nintendo’s classic Gameboy game received an HD remake this year on the Switch and is fantastic. Now, in The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, you have the ability to add pins to the map, which makes it easier than ever to remember places to go and people to see.  Furthermore, there are more fast travel spots making it easier to get where you need to go without wasting time. This means, when you are playing on the go, you can pin special spots on the map to visit and travel there faster using fast travel spots to complete missions in a shorter amount of time.

New Super Lucky’s Talegames to play on the go

New Super Lucky’s Tale is a fun, breezy platformer that is fun for the whole family. Each level in New Super Lucky’s Tale has clovers for you to discover and collect. Sometimes this means collecting 300 coins or simply completing the level will net you one of these illustrious clovers. Level’s aren’t long winded and generally can be completed in a few minutes, making it perfect for on the go play.

PlatinumGames delivered one of the best games of the year with Astral Chain. It is the year 2078 and the world is under attack by an interdimensional species. You take on the role of one of two fraternal twins who have both just been hired by the Neuron Police Task Force to help fight against the Chimera. Cases must be solved to gain more information about the Chimera and require you to put your detective hat and thinking caps on. A great game to play on the go when you have a little bit more time to really sink in and play.

Yoshi’s Crafted Worldgames to play on the go

Yoshi’s Crafted World is a fun platforming game that’s perfect for playing on-the-go. There are a multitude of items to collect and each level features a flip-side version where you must search for 3 Poochy pups. Moreover, flip-side levels allow you to uncover secrets and hidden items. The true challenge comes from getting all the collectibles the game has to offer. In order to access the game’s 15 plus worlds, you need to collect Smiley Flowers. These are hidden throughout each of the stages and can be hidden just about anywhere. If you’ve got a little extra time while playing on the go Yoshi’s Crafted World is a perfect choice.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Legacy of the Duelist Link Evolutiongames to play on the go

Publisher: Konami
Genre: Trading card battle game
Modes: Single player, Multiplayer
ESRB Rating: T (Teen)

This is the perfect game to play on the go for trading card game fans. Konami has made it easy to jump in for a quick card battle while playing on the go. And, Yu-Gi-Oh! Legacy of the Duelist Link Evolution offers competitive action and is full of strategy.

  1. Jon, you have some great ideas here! I loved Link’s Awakening, but it is a remake of my favourite game so I’m not surprised by that. I’ve played a little Mario Maker 2 and the DQXI demo, I’d love to play more of those. I’ve also been really interested in Super Lucky’s Tale since it came out so I think it would be great to play while travelling. There are so many great games to play!
