How to get the best home theatre audio

Sometimes I watch TV and get the audio from the television speakers. This is fine for me when I’m watching the news or a weather report. If I’m watching something meaningful, I’ll use a sound bar connected via an HDMI cable. I use that same sound bar to stream Spotify sometimes if I want background music in the living room.

However, when I’m watching something meaningful to me I send the audio to my receiver so I get an audio experience comparable to the great visuals and great storytelling I’m enjoying. It’s all part of the same package for me. Sometimes, I’ll rewatch something that I streamed on my phone because I know it will be so much better on the big screen with the big sound I can only get from my stereo. For example, the opening music of Star Trek: Discovery has amazing depth and gives me chills—when I listen on my stereo! Even Tig Notaro’s acerbic tone as my favourite character in this series, Jett Reno, is more biting through a proper home theatre system.

How do I know what to look for in a home theatre receiver

Like many of the Canadians reading this article, I am not a home theatre receiver expert. I’m not. That’s why I hire people who know more than I do for many of the projects I assign for the Best Buy blog.   3. I just have regular tv speakers. It would be wonderful to have this receiver so I can add speakers for much better sound.

  9. The speaker directly from the 10 year old tv this would DRASTICALLY change our home theatre quality!

  13. I usually use an old Sony 5.1 receiver which I bought second-hand. It only has one optical input, I really need to move to something with HDMI to simplify my setup!

  14. Our reciever doesn’t work properly all the time. The sound doesn’t always work and it’s old. We would be so great full for a new one.

  35. I had NO IDEA THAT many AV receivers have a feature that lets you set up a second zone, so that you can have a second pair of speaker in another room. Sounds AMAZING TO ME!!

  36. I’m big fan of pioneer receiver but can only afford the used low end model from kijiji which is not enough power to bring up the floor speakers to it full sound. I use AV receiver for home music listening and TV. Winning this will be a massive upgrade and it will be a joy to listen to music.

  38. I use a stereo setup with some amazing imported Victor speakers from japan and marantz cd amp! Would love to update to a full surround setup!

  39. We just use the speaker that’s in our TV, so it’s pretty pathetic and lots of times, I can’t pick up what the actors are saying. Someone in our family needs hearing aides, so when you are hearing impaired it’s even harder to listen to our tv. The Pioneer Home Receiver would give us a huge boost, better quality sound, and we’d all get way more enjoyment from being able to hear properly.
