patio furniture backyard patio makeoverI am ready for spring, and I know I’m not alone. Although this winter hasn’t been as severe as last year, seeing the trees bud and the flowers pop up is a very welcome sight. Once the first day of spring hits you can start to make plans for outside again, and whether or not we still have snow or tons of rain, I always use the beginning of spring to kick off my yearly backyard patio makeover.

Why this is a great month for a backyard patio makeover

Your outside space is an extension of your inside space, so it’s great to change things up outside every year. Some years that means new lighting and outdoor accessories like throw pillows and storage, while other years it’s been a full set of patio furniture.

It might not feel like patio season all across Canada yet. I know in some areas there might still be a bit of snow, but that doesn’t mean you can’t begin planning or start your own backyard patio makeover too. I like makeovers that take a few days or less, so rather than pavers and shovels, I re-do my patio with patio furniture and patio accessories.

Here’s a few tips if you’d like to makeover your outdoor space this year, and you won’t have to spend a lot of time to see a huge improvement.

Is this the year you invest in patio furniture?

wicker patio furnitureIf you look at before and after photos of backyard patio makeovers, you’ll see that adding a new patio set is a huge part of this type of renovation.

That’s because when your furniture is old, broken, or run down, it can ruin the entire look of the your patio.

The latest patio furniture sets look amazing, and are more like an outdoor couch than the same-old lawn chairs. I love the curved look of full wicker sets with cushions and pillows. I can imagine how cozy it would be with a blanket and a good book. There’s sets that are large, with enough seating for a large family. Or, if you’re a couple or have limited space, you can choose a set built for two.

While you’re looking at patio furniture to seat a large group I recommend taking a peek at individual seating too. There are hammocks and swing chairs built for one or two, and they’re a fun addition that doesn’t take up a ton of space. Or, if you like the comfort of an Adirondack chair, there’s single patio chairs you can mix and match. Add one, two, or four, and everyone will have a spot around the fire.

Add warmth to your patio with patio heaters

There’s wood firepits you can use to roast hot dogs and marshmallows, or if you’d rather use propane than wood, there are propane fire pits that give over 50,000 BTUs of cozy heat. They can even be converted to natural gas

On a patio attached to the house you can also warm things up by adding a outdoor  heaters in the form of a propane heater or outdoor space heater. There’s the table-top patio heaters from Napoleon that sits neatly on your patio table and gives off 10,000 BTUs or flame patio heaters that can heat up your patio with up to 46,000 BTUs.

Gazebos define your outdoor space

gazebo If you’ve got a big yard or a yard with a lot going on, one of the biggest challenges is to somehow define your patio space. Some people use paver blocks, landscape rocks, or a built-in deck to define their patio, but if you want an easy one-day solution, I highly recommend adding a gazebo.

Gazebos provide you with shelter when you need it, and they also give you an area to place your patio furniture, patio tables, and patio storage. I’m a huge fan of large outdoor gazebos with UV-resistant roof to protect you from rain, mosquito netting, and zippered side walls. You can just imagine sitting out there in the rain and being perfectly cozy.

There’s also the smaller gazebos with metal posts and zippered close doors. With mosquito netting you can enjoy the patio in the thick of insect season, and smaller gazebos are easy to set up or pick up and move anywhere.

Patio accessories personalize your patio

I will pack up my cushions and store them in a shed each year, but after a few years they definitely need replacing. Changing them out can make an entire backyard space look different in minutes.

Patio umbrellas are also another way you can add to your backyard patio makeover. A cheery umbrella over your patio table can be really inviting when you have guests over.

Last, but definitely not least, a patio would not be complete without a set of outdoor lights. You can now choose outdoor smart lights for full app-based control of your garden lights. They are controllable from your phone, and they are the perfect way to light up your patio.

Portable spa anyone?

My husband thinks it would take too much time and effort to hook up a hot tub here, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy a spa in the backyard. For sheer portability and fast set up, an inflatable spa is a great choice. They can reach temps up to 40 degrees, and sinking into bubbly hot water would be a great way to end a spring or summer evening.

It doesn’t take a lot of time or effort right now, but a backyard patio makeover will pay off in a big way when the warmer weather hits. You’ll be ready to relax outside in your shorts and a t shirt and your patio will be ready for you.

Even if the weather out your window doesn’t look like spring, there’s no reason you can’t kick off patio season and start your backyard patio plans right now by checking out all of the patio furniture on
