Should I get an essential oil diffuser? If you’ve been asking yourself this question, my answer is yes. Diffusers offer many benefits for your health and for the overall energy of your home.
What’s the difference between a diffuser and a humidifier?
A diffuser distributes essential oils into the air in a thin mist of water. A humidifier on the other hand is designed to maintain adequate moisture in a room, which is essential when the air is dry from having the heat turned on during the colder months. However, you can get a machine that performs both functions. For instance, this HoMedics Ellia Awaken Ultrasonic Aroma Diffuser works so that you can add essential oils as well as sooth the humidity by helping to alleviate dry air.
What are the benefits of using a diffuser?
It purifies the air.
The essential oils you place in a diffuser can help reduce chemical toxins, bacteria, or fungus in a room—and leave your home smelling wonderful. Even better, as the air in your home is purified, it naturally can help improve your immune system. Some of my favourite essential oils are rosemary, oregano, lemon, and cinnamon.
It enhances your mood.
We all feel happier when we enter a space that smells good. That’s why the candle industry is so lucrative. But keeping an open candle flame around kids and pets has its risks. Diffusing essential oils is healthy and safe, and everyone will feel better as a result.
Here’s a snapshot of some of the potential mood shifts that essential oils can provide:
– Rosemary: Boosts energy in the mornings. Good for improving memory.
– Lemon: Calms you when you feel anxious or angry.
– Peppermint: Boosts energy and stimulates clear thinking.
– Lavender: Has relaxing qualities to help you fall asleep.
– Ylang-ylang [I never heard of it until writing this post]: Helps increase libido. And you‘re welcome.
Ultimately, pick a scent that appeals to you and makes you feel good. You can also find many blends of different oils that offer specific health benefits.
It promotes better sleep.
I want to elaborate on this benefit a little more. I mentioned above that lavender oil is great to help you fall asleep, as well as to increase the quality of your snooze. For me, it has become a new ritual to mix lavender oil and eucalyptus into my diffuser before I go to bed. Since eucalyptus is a decongestant, it also helps me breathe better during the dry months. I recently bought a travel-sized diffuser to take around when I won’t be sleeping in my bed for a few nights. It makes being away from home a lot more comfortable.
How do you use a diffuser?
Each diffuser is different, but all of them contain a passage in which to place water and a few drops of your favourite essential oils. Some diffusers, like the Ellia Gather shown on the left, can illuminate in a variety of colours that you choose.
